Thanks man. I went to my local store, looking for a NAS/ home server and they really only had this unit in-store. I thought to myself "is this too 'home user'? should I look around online for something more pro/expensive etc." Once I got home, googled and found this video, I saw it was perfect for my needs. So I hopped back in the car and went straight back bought it!! Only 2 days in, but so far very happy with it. So thanks for your very clear video - you explained the product perfectly.
I ordered this drive and waiting to arrive, I watched your review and it was really helpful in making decision between ex2 and mirror. I also compared synology but its on higher price point, what I really like about synology is their interface and dropbox like sync capability. I really like price I got from amazon for My Cloud Mirror but only missing point (significant for me) is sync over internet/intranet. I just wanted to check if there is any way we can implement dropbox like sync on My Cloud Mirror using some advanced methods.
It would be interesting to see if the computer used in this thing can be either upgraded or replaced for better performance. With a HDD docking cradle it'd be so much faster to copy data to the HDDs used for this. Then drop them back into the chassis of the WD MyCloud Mirror. That Icecast feature got me interested the most. I'm coming around to the idea of having one of these for home theater use and access to my files from outside the house.
***** Same here, thank you so much to clarify the main different between Mirror and EX2. I only want to replace the maxing-out older Maxtor OneTouch drive and don't need the addition of the EX2; and the the price different i gain one TB (4TB vs 6TB). Thank you very much!
Hi Lon. Excellent video series on the WD products. Have you ever discussed the option of using WD drives in RAID1 mode but using an ASUS router (through the router USB) to get the online/cloud functions? I'm afraid that the built in firewall on the ASUS will prevent connectivity to the WD drives from the outside world. Nice work and thanks for helping us novices!
I just found your site and really like your product reviews, very informative. Of course, I just purchased a 3TB My Cloud drive before finding your site. Watching your videos on the mirror NAS got me to thinking if there is a way I can add a second 3TB My Cloud drive and mirror the drives? My thoughts on this are that they have individual power sources and can be in different rooms in the house. Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.
Hey Lon can you do a video on how to set up the bulletin board service within the My Cloud EX4 or my cloud mirror 2... I have looked everywhere for a tutorial on how to set that up and I can't find anything and I figured you're my go-to guy so if you can do that and show a step-by-step setup to get that up and running I would really appreciate it huge fan of yours and look forward to your videos
Great review Lon! I am trying to decide between this NAS and the Synology DS214? Which would you recommend for someone who has no experience in setting up a NAS?
Lon, I see one benefit you've mentioned is Remote Backup, where you can use Smartware to backup to another My Cloud in another location via the internet. I love this idea, but if you're backing up 1 or 2 TB hard drives, wouldn't this be incredibly slow or expensive? Or is there a detail I'm not thinking of, such as backing them up on a local network first and then only doing the incremental backups via the Net thereafter?
Lon, great review. Did you test the time it takes to resync the Mirror after a power outage? Also is there a way to safely turn off the device with a UPS when power drops out.
Hi Lon, Great Review, but I think another difference from the EX2 is also the power saving feature. The My Cloud Mirror doesn't come with that feature right?
Hi ! great video as usual :) just one question, i saw that you can download torrent with this, but can you do that with your iphone/ipad? if you are in another place, connect with your wd mc mirror and load torrents or is just available in your local network ? greetings !
I used to have the single drive MYCLOUD and now have the 4TB Mirror a huge improvement as far as performance goes the interface is much faster and has more features. One question: When I add users there is no option to send the email to users how do I get them to be able to access the files? What am I missing? Thanks Rainer
Hello i really appreciate the quality content of your video. I have 2 questions 1. What is the best router which one should use with this NAS or what is the optimal router speed 300 mbps ?? 2. What happens when there is a power failure does the device switches on by itself and available if i am outside my network. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for your reviews - I was going to get the single drive but decided on the Mirror drive and just bought it using your affiliate link. Also, I ended up signing up for Amazon Prime too so not sure if you get a kickback from that, but I hope you do. Thanks for what you're doing.
Hi Lon, I am still considering this product but have seen some negative reviews about the time machine backups. Is it true that file sizes cannot be limited? Some reviews say that the drive will fill up quicker. What is your opinion?
Hi Lon, I am researching for my first NAS purchase, and your videos really helps. I am using the My Cloud Mirror 4TB as my base model for comparison. How does it measure to the Synology DS214 or DS214+ with the same 2X 2TB HDD WD Red? Price wise, the DS214 is $100 more expensive. Is the price difference worth it? My goal is primary cloud data storage with redundancy while i am travelling or working abroad. Thanks.
Hi, I was wondering with WD My Cloud Mirror in mind and comparing with Synology DS213J and Qnap TS-212P, witch is better in durability. I have 3 iomega that only give me headache, I only use to store my documents, photos, my movies and music. Great reviews, keep it up, thank you.
Hey Lon, great review. I have a question. Would this be a sufficient enough drive to share with a small team of 2 - 4 people? Initial project files may reach up to 12GB (possibly 15GB), but just regular day - to - day task for updating project files would average around roughly 100MB - 450MB. Do you think the mirror would be a decent choice or the EX2(4)? I know there are greater choices out there like Synology...But for now, until can save the money - the WD drives are in a better price range. I am aware of GitHub and dozens of other repository solutions but I like something that's a little more private/isolated.
Thank you for the great videos. If I buy a 2TB Mycloud Mirror with (1TB per drive) can I remove the drives at a later date and replace with 8TB (4TB per drive). Does the specific case (2TB for example) care what size drives are enclosed?
Hello Lon, I had a question and I was hoping you can help me with. I am buying the wd my cloud ex 2 and wanted to know if it's capable of streaming from outside my local home network (ex. Work or friend's house). If so is there an app that I need to use? Btw Great review videos. Thanks.
Hi Lon, Great video, thanks for the review. Until I watched your video I had wasted about 2hr+ sifting through the web trying decide between My Cloud Personal vs Mirror vs EX2 for a small business. After watching your video the choice was easy. . . . WD Mirror 4TB. BTW What is the User limit (if any) for the My Cloud Personal vs Mirror vs EX2 ? I cant seem to find anything on it except for the EX2 which the WD website mentions "upto 10 concurrent users" which would mean that only 10 people can access the drive at the same time, though I suspect the total number of users could be much higher though not all logged in at the same time. I suspect you have some contacts at WD that you could ask about this, and while your at it ask them to update their online specs to mention this stuff AND put a My Cloud Personal vs Mirror vs EX2 Spec comparison table to help us amateurs select the right WD cloud drive to suit our needs. Cheers Russell
Great review, thank you. Do you know what is the max drive capacity that it can support per disk? I know that you're using 2TB each, but does it support say up to 4TB each? Does it have the capability to boot up by itself after a power failure? I recall the EX4 does. Thanks in advance.
Hi Lon, are the drives in the box user replaceable or does the box need to be sent away?Great videos as usual. I bought my last one-drive My Cloud on the strength of your review and it has been great.
hey Lon, great review as always. In this price point ($299) what is the fastest (read/write) 2 bay NAS you've tried? Also have you tried anything in the Thecus line?
Thanks for the excellent video. I've purchased the MyCloud Mirror. One issue I've discovered is an inability to tag files on the NAS in Mac's Finder. I can apply the tag, but the tagged folders do not appear when choosing the tag in Finder's sidebar. Is this by design?
Hi Lon, excellent video. just what i am looking for! quick question; is it better to have the 4TB mirror (to be used as RAID1) or the my cloud 2TB + WD 2TB Elements External Hard Drive? combination is cheaper in UK even 3TB my cloud + 3TB elements comb is cheaper. is there any benefit in having the mirror apart from less clutter on the desk? thanks.
Lon, I found this review and similar ones on the WD products very helpful pre-purchase. Do you know if WD have a syncing software solution for backing files up to My Could with purchasing commercial products?
Hi Lon, thanks for the comprehensive review. I'm looking to replace an existing out of warranty SuperMicro NAS with a cluster (for lack of a better word) of these drives. The Enterprise Constellation ES drives are ludicrously expensive and I have access to a TSM tape backup system for backups (this is mainly a datastore for video and photo archives) - so... I was wondering: 1) can you daisy-chain these devices to each other with the USB 3.0 ports? If so, is there a limit? 2) can you use any sata compatible drives or do they specifically have to be WD / WD Red? Thanks.
Lon, I just add the WD MyCloud Mirror 8TB to my home network. I'm in the midst of trying to move files from my previous NAS (Seagate GoFlex Home 2TB NAS). What I'm wondering is two things: 1. Fastest way to move data from GoFlex to WD NAS - USB, across the network, other? 2. Once the data is moved from GoFlex to WD NAS, can I just connect the GoFlex via USB to the WD and connect it that way or would you recommend leaving the GoFlex as it is (NAS)? To be honest - I'm not sure if there's a benefit to #2 above or not - maybe you can explain the pros / cons of it. Thanks and great videos!
+Jason House I ended using robocopy which was MUCH faster than the ol' drag and drop/cut/paste option in Windows. For future reference (should I opt to add to my home network) - is there a better method? I read about rsync as well. Welcome your advice.
I want one of these 'type' of drives but can't decide what to do! I want 4TB of storage and initially found the 4TB single drive version for around £150. Then started thinking about redundancy and found the 4TB mirror version for about £250. Then I realised that the mirror drives are advertised as their 'non mirrored' capacity! (BIT NAUGHTY WD!!!!). The prices don't make sense to me now I know this is the case. I could buy the 4TB single version and an additional 4TB USB 3.0 drive to use as a backup for an extra £100... giving me true 4TB storage with a backup for the price of the 4TB mirror drive which would give me only 2TB of storage.... Am I missing something here?
Lon, I regret have spent money on this, I got all from overheating problem(fan wont start auto) to usb backups failing all the time, It´s not worth the money! The only way I found to transfer all my files was by using your video and acessing it via SSH!
Hi Lon. I'm hoping you can help me decide which route to go here. I have an old IOCell NetDisk I have used for years. However, it has become obsolete due to incompatibility issues with Win10. It has two drives set up in Raid 1 Mirror which I want to continue using Mirror array for my future NAS. Each computer I have in the house was able to connect to it via Ethernet and create it's own "Computer" folder for access to where each computer could add and remove files to it's own folder or a shared folder I also created which allowed all computers to access. However another computer could not access another computers specific files. What I am wanting here is to be able to create user folders specific to each person in my house, not computer specific (with username and password) which can be accessed from any computer or tablet with their own personal login. For example, I have two desktops, one laptop, an iPad and an iPhone. My wife has a desktop, laptop, Android phone and Android tablet. I want to be able to create a user account specific to me and one specific for her to where I can transfer my files to my account and access them from any of my computers, iPad or iPhone and not have them accessible by her. Same thing for her account. I also want to be able to create a shared account that all users can access as well as be able to use my phone to access while away from home. I have watched several of your videos (which are awesome BTW), read many reviews as well as user manuals for both the My Cloud Mirror (gen2) and the My Cloud EX2. From what I am seeing and reading, both of these will do what I am wanting. However, the full details are not exactly touched on to confirm. Can you please advise which of these two would best work for what I am needing? Thanks.
Hello Lon! Excellent video of yours and all the rest. My question might be a bit stupid and sorry for this but here it is... I run a small graphic design office and i primarily use Adobe software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign programms on Apple OSX10 machines. I would like to know how would my machines "see" this harddrive when i set it up. Will i be able to Open/Save directly from my Adobe programs or should i first save locally and then move it via the WD app to the MyCloud Mirror? Is this the difference betweer the Mirror and the EX2. I do not need a drive just to backup and archive but seriously use it as my main office storage destination. Thank you and i would appreciate a reply soon as i am about to buy the Mirror. Keep it up you are awesome and through all youtube reviews yours had the most accurate info!!!
Hi Lon, Can you report on the power supply of this unit? Is it an in-line power adaptor with AC IEC plug & cable or is it a power point mounting unit with interchangeable AC pins depending on the country of origin?
Hi Lon, I'm looking into getting some form of NAS Device that can serve as both my TimeMachine Backup for my MacPro (2010), and as a DNLA Media Server to stream to my Roku, PS3, iPad, etc., and after watching most of your videos about the WD MyCloud, I'm curious about the MyCloud Mirror in "JBOD" Mode, because I would like to know if is it possible to use one of the drives as a TimeMachine Backup and the other drive as the Media Drive, and Backup that one drive independently from the other via USB External Drive? Also, what do you think of the MyCloud a media drive and its reliability to communicate with DNLA enabled devices?
Thanks for your review , do you know if this device has a fan installed inside , i know the EX2 has one , not sure about this one and cant find any info in the internet
Love your reviews! I am hoping you can help me... I am looking for a secure way to share photos and document files with my collaboration group. I would like to be able to just give then a link to the file that would allow them to add and download files as needed. The group is rather large and some members are located in other countries. It would be extremely time consuming to allow access to each one individually. Will one of the personal clouds do this?
What if I was doing external backups and did not need the mirroring. I hope this is not too much of a dumb question but, can the two drives be two different capacities. For example: 1 would have 2TB and another would have 1TB. If you set it up for raid 1 would it have that ability?
I wonder if it's possible to pull out the 2 x 2 TB red drives and replace them with 2 x 8 TB red drives, or if there's a cap on drive size you can use.
Hi Lon. Another Great Video. Congrats! I just reviewed the EX2 on my channel recently and curious is that in Portugal the My Cloud Mirror is about 50€ more expensive than the EX2 :) (At least on my regular supplier) - The Model that i got is the Maxed out 8TB and is working just great. Once again great review. Keep up the good work!!
Lon, do you know of a good video online that provides basic instructional details of how to use the My Cloud Mirror for a PC with screen shots during the tutorial?
Hello there, I bought a EX2 just hours ago and I hit a bump at the very first step. I got the error of "the share does not exist on the server". What does that even means and how do I rectify? Next, when I managed to get on to the dashboard there was a notification indicating that "netowork link down". I seriously can't get anything to work and have been searching up and down in the net for answers. Lastly, I can't connect to the server from "Finder" as I'm using a MacBook. It always ends up with "connection fail" You're my last resort and am hoping for some solutions to these problems
Hi, Lon. Very helpful video, thank you. I just ordered the EX2 (Diskless) and should be receiving it next week. I'd like your opinion on what is probably a dumb question. My network consists of an Apple Time Capsule connected to my modem. That is how my devices connect to the network and to the internet. Should I connect the NAS device directly to my modem or to the Apple Time Capsule that is running my network?
***** Thanks, Lon. Our ISP is AT&T U-Verse. They provided a modem that functions as a WiFi in addition to ethernet, but I decided to add an Apple TimeCapsule to facilitate my Time Machine backups to its 3TB space. So I'm ethernet from the modem to the TC and we use its WiFi in our home in lieu of the modem's direct WiFi. Since then, we've outgrown that setup since our media has exponentially grown. Your review helped to confirm that a NAS is the next natural step for us. As far as the EX2 is concerned, I'm thinking that it should be functional whether it's connected to the modem or downstream at the TimeCapsule but wondered if either point of connection is more optimal than the other. I'll try it both ways and see what happens...thanks again for the great channel, I appreciate the effort you put into these reviews.
Hi Lon, I came across with My Cloud Mirror recently. Do you think it is better to have a single unit of My Cloud Mirror or cheaper combo of My Cloud (single drive) + External Hard Drive connected via USB? The main purpose of the drive is to store media such as photos, mp3, and video. I like to have backup option either via the RAID 1 option on the My Cloud Mirror or the external hard drive connected to My Cloud. Thanks.
Great videos Lon, Im having problems working on live files that are saving to both drives at the same time - do you know if its possible to delay the mirroring to the end of the day for example to prevent this? cheers
Hi Lon, Can a EX2 backup to Mirror? I have a EX2 right now trying to buy one more drive to sync each other, I am thinking of buying My Cloud Mirror but not sure my EX2 can backup to that.
Thanks for sharing. I have an WD Ex2 with 2x 2TB (Raid1) I would like to upgrade the storage to 2x 4TB Can I remove one drive and put a new Red 4TB will the space increase on WD Ex2 I have not found any videos showing how to upgrade the Wd EX2 thanks
lon, what would prevent a person from using a crossover cable and plugging this device into a second nic on your computer. that should eliminate the need for a switch.
Hey Lon, Have you tried out the Seagate nas compared to this? I'm also curious about the WordPress app, does it create a limited install or can it be set up as a fully flexible web server? Thank You and Merry Christmas :)
Great video Lon, if i copy/upload video files (may be up to 23gigs) or any other files to my cloud is it possible to send a link to someone so they can download the files. If so have you tried to send a link (maybe 1gig) and download from the link to see how long it takes? I have pogoplug i tried 5gigs of video file, it took 30min to copy to PP but download from the link on the editors said 19~7 hours. I even tried to download from the same link it was the same. Usually downloading files from net are faster.
Hi Lon, is it possible to swap out the red drives which the MyCloud Mirror comes with (I'd be buying the 8tb so 2 4tb drives) with larger units (for example 2 6tb drives) in future if my requirement grows? Or would you recommend just getting the EX2 for this reason? Are the 6tb (or larger) drives compatible with these devices? Thanks
I have just purchased a WD-My Book Duo 8TB. I'm wondering if i should pair it with a smaller MyCloud so i can access it over a net work... or just exchange it for a Larger MyCloudMirror 6TB. I was given incorrect information in store the DUO will not connect to my router to share files. Thought?!
Hi Lon, i wish i am not getting much of a burden for you with my questions... Here's another quick one (reposting this). If i purchase the Wd mycloud mirror CASE ONLY model for my home, and i install just ONE green 3TB harddrive (which i already have) will it work? and will it backup my other office mirror office i have installed there? Or should it be both configured and set the same (both of them 2Tb HDs). Thank you again!
I'm considering not making the NAS my primary store, and instead plan to use file sync software to sync the NAS to my local disk so I can access all my photos, music, video etc through the cloud. For backup, I'll use external hard disks - connected to my PC for crucial backups, and another one to backup the NAS data. This, I cunningly think to myself, means I can use the dreaded RAID 0 to get faster performance. Is there a downside I'm missing? eg if the RAID failed, could the file syncing software then clone the disaster on my local disk, effectively bricking my computer?
Lon gr8 insight man keep it up, wanna ask you about two things 1st about the encloser encryption,as i have the my book DUO and once the encloser dies,u lost your data even if u replace the encloser as there is a hardware encryption, does the my cloud mirror have the same. secondly , whats the diffrance between the first and the second generation of the mycloud mirror. highly appreciate your superb efforts
also im open for any alternative, the main reason to have it is just having a redundency drives as i have a ton of files but without the tichy stuff, im open for any 16tb storrage with a raid 1 and NO ENCRYPTION whats o ever nor high failier rates
Hi Lon, would you recommend this to store all of Plex's media such as TV shows and movies? I'm currently using and external drive connected to my mid 2011 Mac mini which transcodes without issues. I will only be using the WD My Cloud Mirror for storage (unless it can transcode better than the Mac Mini). Thanks.
Yes I am currently doing that - it definitely won't transcode better than the Mac Mini but it does work well as external storage. I link my movies up to Plex that way and also have them available to Kodi through the same share.
Lon, first of all, thanks for all Your videos, they're more than helpful! While browsing the internet about the differences between Mirror and EX2 I've started to think about using my new Mirror as cache drive for photoshop which led me to read/write speeds. And then it hit me: how is it possible that WD Red solely (WD20EFRX, which are installed inside Mirror and EX2) gets numbers around 100mb W/R but inside Mirror they get max 45mb write and 95mb read???? I am connected through gigabit ethernet.
Hi Lon I am planning to get the EX2 8TB. I am wondering how easy is to transfer files from an USB hard drive where all my files are at present and also I would like to know how easy (and how to) is to backup/mirror some files on an external usb hard drive should internet connection fail.Thank youLuca
Hi Lon. Thanks for your tips online. Im would like to buy 2 units of My Cloud Mirror. One for work and one for home to back up to each other. You mentioned on your video that it can be done. Is it a simple setup and the backup is fully automatic? Thank you.
Lon, I just seen your video. I have a lot of important files at my office. Is it possible to use the my cloud mirror to make a backup of these files from work and then take the device home where it will stay and then continue to automatically do offsite backups of the data from work. in essence I want to use my cloud mirror as an automatic offsite backup system for files at work. In addition at home I would back up the important files there so also have an onsite backup system for home files and offsite backup system for work files.
I'm a photographer and I have a lot of photos. I want to buy WD My Cloud Mirror 8TB to keep all my photo there but I have a question. Can I open file from WD My Cloud Mirror 8TB on my PC like Adobe photoshop and save this file after editing right on WD My Cloud Mirror 8TB? Or I have to download file - edit file and after upload again to the WD My Cloud Mirror 8TB? Thank you.
one thing ive noticed with the single mycloud unit is when you have external storage connected via the 3.0 usb the data transfer can be laggy and slow on occasion and if your loading media from the external drive it can sometimes lag and skip would this problem be any better on this device? for my cloud drives im using a seagate central and a mycloud and they both seem to behave the same with the above problem :/
Great video, thank you! Can I hook up my USB only printer to this unit? I knew there was a great DLink NAS a few years back that would also work as a print server, but I no longer see it for sale.
Lon, I have the my cloud 3TB model. Was wondering if you were able to backup on this using superduper backup software by shirt pocket. It seem when i access directly via the network it only show the public folders. Is there a way to save the backup on a non-public folder?
quick question about my cloud. For the usb connected drive for back up if your my cloud is 2 TB does the drive you connect usb also have to be 2 TB even though you only have 800mb of data actually stored. Or can you set it up to back up certain directories?
Hi lond, would you recoomend the drobo 800fs for someone who procures a lot of higb def movies? Legally of course. Or something lime daisy chained my cloud? I have a owc raid drive but it only usb and firewire which is connected to my mac pro. I like yout channel. Youre a geek like most of us who refuse to grow up and still play games haha
what about buying a 2TB model and then change the drives to upgrade to 8TB, aside of the price, does it has any difference compared to the 8TB model from the store?
Do you have any idea how to setup the WD My Cloud EX2 4TB to find it as well remotely on my finder? Trying to adjust the settings, but I'm not getting what I want. Looking forward for your reply, or maybe a Video!!
With "BackUps" and using an identical My Cloud Mirror on a different networks (offsite) will it "replicate" the exact date to that offsite drive and then pull any modified files back to it, or is it "Backing-Up" into one single backup file? ie. will the two drives be identical and able to be used independently and possibly nightly they will update each other or is not that way? THANKS for the videos!
Some reviews I have read state the My Cloud Mirror does not have the NAS Red drives as appear in this video. I cannot verify from WD specs if the drives that are shipped with the My Cloud Mirror are in fact the Red Drives. Can anyone tell me where to get the specs on the drives to verify before I order?
Is there kind of a sleep or standby mode where the hard drives actually stop spinning and the fans stop working? I've heard this thing makes some noise. Just wanted to double check that. Excellent review thanks
Also, under the "General Settings" of the single drive type, there is a "Sleep Mode", but what it is exactly I'm not 100% sure. I believe it slows the RPM from 5200 RPM's to like 1,800 RPM's (this is a guess on my part).
that's strange. If the speed reduction is done automatically by the hard drive itself it's logic. other than that it's not user friendly to do it manually every time you need to use it.
Not sure what you mean by do it manually ... Once it's set up, there's nothing that you have to do to it (unless you add/remove a user or share). I've had mine set up on my network for about a half a year, after setting it up, I've done nothing to it, and it acts like a drive that is in a computer (once it's mapped to a drive letter). The only time it doesn't act like a drive that's in the computer is when you're outside of your home network (or the network it's on), at that point you just go to: mycloud.com and sign in. The only thing I've done is set it up originally with a user (myself) and a share folder, set it to use the same static IP address. There's nothing you have to do to it "manually" after you set up the setting when you install it on the network.
Hello, I brought My Cloud Mirror 12 TB. All these days it was working fine, But since 3-4 days, the drive is losing connection regularly . I am using iMac latest version of OS. Please Help in solving the Problem Thank you
Hello Lon! Question! After watching your review of Wd Mycloud Mirror i was convinced that was what i needed and purchased it already. It works perfectly as you described. In your video you mention that i could backup my Wd Mirror to another Wd Mirror in a different location over the internet. Must this 2nd Wd mycloud be a Mirror model or just any other Wd MyCloud device? I bought this WD MyCloud Mirror for my office work but i need a backup of it at home. Should I purchase a second Mirror model or any other single drive MyCloud model? (asking in order to save some cash). And another question... i am trying to backup my Mirror model to a USB wd passport but it keeps dropping the backup and doesn't complete. I have upgraded the firmware of the Mirror to its latest one and i have erased everything on the usb passport drive but it keeps dropping. Any suggestions? Thank you soooo much and it is not a big problem if you do not reply me as immediate as last time! Thanks!
Costa Mamangakis Hi Lon, i wish i am not getting much of a burden for you with my questions... Here's another quick one. If i purchase the Wd mycloud mirror CASE ONLY model for my home, and i install just ONE green 3TB harddrive (i have) will it work? and will it backup my other office mirror office i have installed there? Thanks and hope your kid feels better by now!
Is it possible to have a wd mycloud mirror with 2x 4tb drives, configure them to be like one 8tb drive, add a external 8tb drive with usb and then use the 8tb external and the 8tb internal with raid 1?
good day, I have two WD MyCloud Mirror working in the same network, how do I change the name of each MyCloud Mirror machine? so I can differentiate one from another easier.. thanks you
Hello there, I was happy my cloud came out but a bit disappointed when I got it because everything is done using internet, like authentication on mobile apps... I live in a place where internet is a luxury we don't have all the time, those companies should take that into account when releasing their devices; I expect a cloud of my own to work perfectly even if I don't have any 3g connection. Or is there any other way to connect my iphone to my wd without internet???
Yes. Just my access point to my LAN... my android device can see the device on my network but cannot b authenticated. So is my windows fone. But iphone. I cant even see it
Rodriguez Guery You confuse me. "Cloud" technology IS Internet based. That's the whole point. Remove the internet connection and it's just like any other NAS, which it should also work as using a file app such as ES File Explorer on Android en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing
Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade the drives in this device? I've searched everywhere and I can't find an answer. I have the same exact version shown in the video (2x2TB) and it's running in RAID 1. I'd like to be able to replace the drives with higher capacity drives once the old ones are full. I know I can expand the storage capacity by connecting additional external drives, but I would rather keep it all contained in one unit. My idea is to replace one drive, let the RAID rebuild, then replace the other. I'm just not sure if that would work and if it does, will it automatically expand the volume or will I have to find a way to do it manually? Given that the drives are replaceable, I'm surprised that there is no documentation on upgrading them, only replacing them when they fail.
Thanks man. I went to my local store, looking for a NAS/ home server and they really only had this unit in-store. I thought to myself "is this too 'home user'? should I look around online for something more pro/expensive etc."
Once I got home, googled and found this video, I saw it was perfect for my needs.
Do you suggest any other product within same price range have similar functions + sync?
Thanks! This video answered by question Mrror Vs EX2 without flicking though tech specs. Off to make my purchase. Thanks again.
Awesome video! Answered all my Qs about the two systems (Mirror vs. EX2).
Thank you!
Superb explanations for NAS newbies! Thanks a lot. I am planning to get an entrance NAS. Your videos help a lot.
Hi Lon,
Great Review, but I think another difference from the EX2 is also the power saving feature.
Thanks
Rainer
Hi Lon, fantastic video. Thanks a lot.Can I buy a lower capacity Mirror and further down the line swap the drives for bigger ones if I need it ??
Thanks.
Hi Lon,
Great video, thanks for the review. Until I watched your video I had wasted about 2hr+ sifting through the web trying decide between My Cloud Personal vs Mirror vs EX2 for a small business. After watching your video the choice was easy. . . . WD Mirror 4TB.
BTW
What is the User limit (if any) for the My Cloud Personal vs Mirror vs EX2 ?
I cant seem to find anything on it except for the EX2 which the WD website mentions "upto 10 concurrent users" which would mean that only 10 people can access the drive at the same time, though I suspect the total number of users could be much higher though not all logged in at the same time.
I suspect you have some contacts at WD that you could ask about this, and while your at it ask them to update their online specs to mention this stuff AND put a My Cloud Personal vs Mirror vs EX2 Spec comparison table to help us amateurs select the right WD cloud drive to suit our needs.
Cheers
Russell
Thanks for the review and comparison. Very informative. Maybe I missed it, but what it the fan noise like?
Great review, thank you.
Do you know what is the max drive capacity that it can support per disk? I know that you're using 2TB each, but does it support say up to 4TB each? Does it have the capability to boot up by itself after a power failure? I recall the EX4 does. Thanks in advance.
Hi Lon, are the drives in the box user replaceable or does the box need to be sent away?Great videos as usual. I bought my last one-drive My Cloud on the strength of your review and it has been great.
Yes on the Mirror you can easily swap drives out.
Lon.TV Thanks Lon! Think I will go with the Mirror.
hey Lon, great review as always.
I was wondering:
1) can you daisy-chain these devices to each other with the USB 3.0 ports? If so, is there a limit?
2) can you use any sata compatible drives or do they specifically have to be WD / WD Red?
Thanks.
Lon, I just add the WD MyCloud Mirror 8TB to my home network. I'm in the midst of trying to move files from my previous NAS (Seagate GoFlex Home 2TB NAS). What I'm wondering is two things:
Great review Lon, Can we install sickbeard, couchpotato, sabNZBD on my cloud mirror or anyother WD nas drives
Great video. Setting this one up at my friends place today.
Thanks.
Hi Lon, excellent review as usual! Do you have any reviews on how to backup remotely to another wd mirror drive? thx!
Lon, thank you for your videos. Do these NAS drives support full drive encryption?
***** You are awesome! You have given me the fastest reply on youtube ever... Super thanks Lon!

Hi Lon, Can you report on the power supply of this unit? Is it an in-line power adaptor with AC IEC plug & cable or is it a power point mounting unit with interchangeable AC pins depending on the country of origin?
Can you upgrade the drives to larger drives after the purchase?
Buy the 8TB and later install more drives to make 16 TB in the future?
Great video, very informative. Thanks! I liked the detailed comparison between this and the more expensive model.
Hi LonWould you recommend this product for storing and streaming videos to a smart TV?Cris
Yes it does, thanks Lon
It always ends up with "connection fail"
You're my last resort and am hoping for some solutions to these problems
Thanks.
I always recommend a two drive unit. See more: lon.tv/nas101
Hmmm, which is better for home based small business? Synology ds218+ or WD My Cloud Mirror?
The review is very Good. I have a Question, According to your Knowledge and Experience, How long will it take for the red drives to fail
+Lon Sideman Thanks for the Feed back, Should I buy WD My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 8 TB version, and will they last for atleast 5 years
+Lon Seidman Thankyou
Great videos Lon,
Im having problems working on live files that are saving to both drives at the same time - do you know if its possible to delay the mirroring to the end of the day for example to prevent this? cheers
Hi Lon, Can a EX2 backup to Mirror? I have a EX2 right now trying to buy one more drive to sync each other, I am thinking of buying My Cloud Mirror but not sure my EX2 can backup to that.
Dear,
Which router should I use?
Because I realized that the connections to the devices are properly fast.
***** Sorry for not being very specific. I wanted the ask about the Seagate STCT300 with the NAS OS 4 :P
Thanks
***** Great, so I could buy a MyCloud Mirror and down the line have it with a 4tb drive and a 6tb drive for a total of 10tb (5tb available in RAID 1)?
***** Super thanks once again! You are the best!
Lon gr8 insight man keep it up,
wanna ask you about two things
1st about the encloser encryption,as i have the my book DUO and once the encloser dies,u lost your data even if u replace the encloser as there is a hardware encryption, does the my cloud mirror have the same.
secondly , whats the diffrance between the first and the second generation of the mycloud mirror.
highly appreciate your superb efforts
also im open for any alternative, the main reason to have it is just having a redundency drives as i have a ton of files but without the tichy stuff, im open for any 16tb storrage with a raid 1 and NO ENCRYPTION whats o ever nor high failier rates
Thank you.
***** Thanks Lon for your reply. I will wait for your video tutorials. Thanks!
Lon,
I just seen your video.
Awesome, thank you so much for responding quicky!
The USB backup drive doesn’t have to be the full 2TB. So it only has to be at least 800MB in your case.
Actually you get lipsync about halfway through. I love good syncage 😍
Yep you were correct. Your synced now !!! 😍😍😍😍
***** Thanks so much for answering so quick! I am a new subscriber you rock.
Hi Lon can you upgrade a 8tb system to a 10 by buying 2 5tb drives, while it support the greater drive?
thanks
I bought one today can it host a website
Some reviews I have read state the My Cloud Mirror does not have the NAS Red drives as appear in this video. I cannot verify from WD specs if the drives that are shipped with the My Cloud Mirror are in fact the Red Drives. Can anyone tell me where to get the specs on the drives to verify before I order?
Is there kind of a sleep or standby mode where the hard drives actually stop spinning and the fans stop working? I've heard this thing makes some noise. Just wanted to double check that.
Excellent review thanks
I have a My Cloud, however it's not the mirror version just the single disk type and the one I have barely makes any noise at all.
Thanks for the info
The second you said that I can not connect directly to the unit it became a useless brick to me.
Is it actually possible to upgrade hard drives and get more storage later if you need to?
Hi lon I have a question.. I just bought my cloud 3 terabytes... does it have to be connected via ethernet cable all the time?
Hello, I brought My Cloud Mirror 12 TB. All these days it was working fine, But since 3-4 days, the drive is losing connection regularly . I am using iMac latest version of OS. Please Help in solving the Problem

Hi Lon, just wondering if you could do a video on the FTP setup to wd my cloud mirror?
Hello Lon!
Thanks!
***** Thank you! You are the best Lon! Understanding the time difference btw EU and USA you rock on your immediate responses! Thanks again!

Remove the internet connection and it's just like any other NAS, which it should also work as using a file app such as ES File Explorer on Android

+APPLBL00M I would think you can, and it looks like its just you just swap it out.
+Elvis S i need an answer to this tooo!!!!!
yes u can, in the user manual says how, pretty straight forward
