Been watching your videos on the MyCloud line as I have decided to buy one. They have all been very useful to teach me how to use the drive, so hopefully when it arrives I'll be set up in no time. Thank you!
First of all, thanks Lon for all the great videos! Easy to understand and very helpful. I purchased the WD My Cloud (Single) for my dad before to back-up his Windows PC. Now I got myself the WD EX2 for my iMac based on your reviews. When I was setting up the Time Machine settings on EX2 I also wanted to limit the max file size of that TM backup. To my surprise I was able to use the slider to do just that (like you mentioned in your video - but previously only for Single Drive My Cloud drives) - Now it seems to work for My Cloud Mirror / EX2 as well. So it is not necessary to create special user and limit the the quota for this purpose. I noticed you run 1.04.04 firmware on your WD My Cloud EX 2. Perhaps this was fixed in latest 1.05. release of the EX2 firmware mine is running on. Thanks and regards from sunny Singapore!
Thanks Lon! BTW: We have WD PR4100 and you set TimeMachine backup size similarly to single drive units. It might be because we have the drive set in RAID5. Your videos are super useful and we greatly appreciate your efforts!
Brilliant! Thanks for taking the time to make that vid. I just got a "My Cloud Mirror" and could not find how to limit TM backups anywhere. (What I found pertained to the first situation you discussed, and I was finding the empty box that you showed thinking WTF.) This was exactly what I needed, and I like your suggestion for creating a special TM user since there will be three of us in this family using.
So you enable the time machines backup, and then set a quota to every single users? but this is possible only with my cloud mirror or ex2 and ex4. If you have my cloud you can't :(
The User Quota is only visible for accounts that are created on the MyCloudEX4 (local accounts). If the MyCloudEX4 is a member of an Active Directory Domain, quotas cannot be configured for AD users. For me, I created local account named "timemachine" with a password and then then the user had the quota option. MacOS works fine with the MyCloudEX4 with it being a member of AD. You just mount the shares as SMB and provide your AD account name / password. But for my user 'timemachine", I use the hostname of the NAS as the domain (EG: mycloud\timemachine + password) to mount the time machine backup share. The problem is when you have multiple Macs backing up using the same user account. The quota applies to the user account, not the Mac. You would have to create 1 user account for ever Mac to keep all the Macs happy
Hi Lon, Thanks so much for your great videos. I have watched your review with EX2 and the mirror but i still don't understand a few items on my new device. I have a WD my cloud single drive and upgraded to the EX2. i have installed and set it up correctly and all seems well. Time Machine and Plexing i have done as a result of your videos, and shares and access features are set, swell as RAID 1 mode. But i do need your help. Please could you kindly do a detailed review of features on WD My Cloud EX2, especially items such as iSCSI (which you have done before), volume virtullization, remote server in settings>network, and basically lots of items in network which i don't understand. Also ISO mount is a new item i would appreciate if you could touch on. i am using a MacBook Pro Retina running OSX 10.9. if i upgrade to yosemite will i have to setup the EX2 again? or are they compatible? Many thanks again. Your brilliant videos are throughly appreciated!!! Vaqaas
Hi Lon, your tutorials are so helpful, many thanks! I've just got a MyCloud Mirror to use primarily as a Time Machine backup for my MacPro; I'd hoped to be able to import my previous "Backups.backupdb" folder but hadn't realised about the network drive having a different format to HFS+ - do you know is there any workaround to enable this, or will I just have to start a fresh Time Machine backup on the new drive?
Hi Lon, I want to backup my macbook pro, but i cant find the wd mycloud device one the time machine, it apears others external hard drives but not the wdmycloud What can I do? Thanks so much for your great videos.
Hi Lon, first of all: thank you VERY MUCH for all your videos. They are not only very informative but also rather entertaining. Good energy! I wonder if it would be OK to ask another question: Is it possible to back up more than one Mac (using TimeMachine) with that device? Many thanks! C.
+Lon Seidman Is there anything special you need to do for that, or just turn on TimeMachine on each device (in my case an iMac and a MBP) and choose the My Cloud? Can you limit the size of each time machine's usage (like 1Tb for the MPB and 2TB for the iMac?)
Hi Lon, your videos are very helpful; thanks. I've got a question about User Names versus Shares. I have the My Cloud EX4, and apparently it does allow you to set the quota nowadays btw. However, I still like your idea about creating a specific user. My question is, do you/should you need to create a User Name AND a Share for setting up a Time Machine Backup? When looking at the Shares tab, both user names and shares show up there - I found this confusing. When should you use a User Name and when should you use a Share, and is there an overlap between how they function? Thanks much! Falls
Hi Lon, Can you make a video on how to use my-cloud NAS to back up multiple Macs. ie. use TimeMachine to back up two Macs. I have the mycloudPR4100. I haven't been able to get it to work
Ok thanks for this video - now I can see for what I want to do with Plex, that this is the better drive for me. I'll send the other one back PS _ love the wall of old technology. I'm 47 and lot of that stuff is cool to see.
Hi Lon. I have been watching a lot of yourWD EX2 Ulta Nas video's great info Thanks, I am moving from a D-Link Sharecentre my question I am on a Mac and is there software to scrub the HD's (Test Sectore) that I am moving to the WD EX2
Hello! I got a My Cloud Home and I want to make Time Machine Backups there but I don't want that Time Machine takes all the space with old backups. How can I do it? Thanks.
Can I use an external 8TB plugged into the back of my cloud and use that as a destination for time machine to use instead of the internal my cloud drive ?
Hi Lon, thank you very much for the educational videos. Quick question, how is the performance of WD My Cloud Mirror when you have 2-3 Macbook Pros backing up to it? I am eyeing the 2x4 TB. My Time Capsule died after three years of backing up 2 MBP's. Thanks, Kyle
***** hopefully it will last longer than the 2 TB Apple's Time Capsule (4th gen) that died after 2 yrs, 7 mo! BTW, any observations on the performance of WD My Cloud Mirror vs. Apple Time Capsule?
Apple makes a big point of saying that TM wants the whole drive. Recently I've been advised by an Apple engineer that TM doesn't even want you to partition the drive! Can you say something about how WD My Cloud overcomes this problem? Also, could talk a little slower? My brain doesn't listen as fast as you talk! Thanks!!
I think the only reason for a network attached storage is for multiple computers and multiple users. How does one limit each of three separate time machine backups? And further. Must I use AFP or SMB protocol for accessing the My Cloud. Apple now says the AFP is " deprecated". I looked it up, and it means not advised.
***** Like NeilFX, I am interested in knowing how to set quotas FOR USERS in WD My Cloud, not really for the Time Machine Backups. I wouldn't want my family members to fill up the My Cloud with only their data and hog all the space by themselves. WD should update their software to enable us, I mean "admins", to set *user space quotas* in My Cloud.
Jeffrey Ocaya I researched this well enough and unfortunately, there was no way for individual quota management on the My Cloud line. WD was really keen to provide only for consumers for those who want to setup a NAS for a very affordable price. If you do really need the micromanaging features, Synology has got you covered. (Though I'm gonna be stuck with the MyCloud for years)

Thanks for that. It was driving me crazy thinking TM would take over the entire drive :)

I think WD must have changed the interface for the mycloud mirror gen 2. I don’t see a quota setting under users.

AFP is deprecated on the Mac for sharing with others but they are unlikely to strip the AFP and SMB clients out of future versions of OS X.
Thank you. Which should be used with Time Machine now the SMB 3 appears to replace the AFP?

how can I limit the size of a folder for a specific user ?

That's exactly what I need to do on my Friend's machine.
But, we're in 2024 🤔
Thanks!!!
The Doctor is pissed.
Cheers! :)
