  • When it comes to the history of children's television, it really is essential that we don't overlook Mr Johnny Morris OBE. His Animal Magic programme was groundbreaking in its time, being both entertaining and educational, and it's still fondly remembered by millions to this day - so it's with this in mind that we present to you Danny Baker's affectionate tribute to the man and his work, originally broadcast on Wednesday, 28th April, 1993.
You'll be pleased to know that we're treated to clips of the elephant with the hose, the gorilla who decides to sit on his lap, Dotty the Ring-tailed Lemur, and far too many more to mention. Plenty of laughs are to be had throughout, but there's a bit of an odd tone to the end of it, where Danny seems almost compelled to apologise for the show being of its time, and not as ecologically sound as it ought to have been. But I'm sure I'm not alone in being able to appreciate the innovative and unconventional style that ultimately still stands as part of the blueprint for much of kids' TV today.
Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording.

An affable, charming and amusing TV presenter, one of the very best, and his animal voice characterisations were perfectly judged; lucky enough to watch the show as a young boy, Johnny Morris, never forgotten.

Yep - the Creature Comforts sketches were half based on Animal Magic, and in fact Johnny Morris sometimes lent his voice to them.
