  • The Phantom Zone. Rita's at her wits' end and, after one suspicious breakage too many, she finally tells Angelo exactly what she thinks of him and where he should go. Has she really lost Mike's best friend forever in the heat of the moment? Or is there some way back from in between the fourth and fifth dimensions? This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 21st January, 1993.
To say that this one is highly emotional is an understatement of mammoth proportions. Although it's bookended by comedic moments, the main body is all about relationships and how people really feel about each other, and it's played to perfection. That includes the main three regulars, plus Mike's mum/Rita's sister Patti (played by Jocelyn Cunningham). There have probably been deaths in TV shows that haven't hit as strongly as this.
Funniest bits? Well, there's the literal confusion over the instruction not to show one's face, and the obvious self-reference to being trapped between BBC Two and Channel 4. Most upsetting? Well, I really felt for everyone at some point, but especially Angelo when he's being properly laid into over the award. That's something we can all relate to.
Anyway, look out at the beginning for a nice promo for Zzzap!, plus some continuity on either side presented by Glenn Kinsey - a matter of weeks, I believe, before in-vision presentation was scrapped all together.
Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.

I can't take all the credit, but you're very welcome! I always try to leave in the continuity and promos and all that for exactly this reason. :-)

@James Henderson Oh, I _so_ wish they would. It's a 99% certainty they won't, though.

I love the bit with Angelo on the four tellies, the way they're slightly out of sync and at one point don't even have the same footage on them, but different takes of Angelo saying the same dialogue, plus the white noise and all the sound effects. Really well done, brilliant effect. And the scene where Patti breaks down is very affecting. A great episode.

Ah, Patti breaking down is actually two episodes ago. My bad.

Yeah, I love that sort of attention to detail, too - they really did create a believable world all within basically a single set and a tiny budget.
