6:45 Two famous paintings of Henry VIII aimed at presenting an impression of health and virility at a time he was bedridden with terrible leg sores his physicians had no idea how to treat... Medieval Propaganda at its very best...and the work of this equally famous painter, at the top of his profession...Great work, as is this presentation, on this most interesting of subjects.
@@alexanderkarayannis6425 You can, of course, call it what you please, but scholars of British history and English literature call 1537 'early modern'.
Holbein was a truly gifted artist. I would really like to know what King Henry VIII really looked like…you know Harry wouldn’t like a portrait of how he really looked! I am sure Holbein and other artists didn’t dare paint him as he really was. Thank you for the work you do in bringing us these historical figures.
Venus is almost identical to Lais of Corinth. Holbein was looking to cut costs by reusing the dress and removing the sleeves. The background cloth is also the same. Good move. The clients probably did not see the two paintings side by side.
The portrait of Anne of Cleves, I believe, was the one that , when, shown to Henry, convinced him to marry her. But when he met her in person, he was not impressed. Holbein made her look more attractive than she actually WAS. Lucky the painting still exists and that Henry didn't smash it to pieces.
Not true. I've read she looked like her portrait and was attractive Henry didn't like her body type plus she embarrassed him before they met properly. Read up on it
Good video! Is there a self- portrait of Holbein with shoulder length hair & a fuller beard? Is it possible to do a similar treatment of his drawings such as "praying hands?" Good job & thanks, Holbein is one of my favorites...I believe he really recorded the essence of his subjects...an artistic as well as a historical record...
After reading my comment, I realized that the portrait I was thinking of is the self-portrait of Holbein the Elder..."Praying hands" is by Durer, whose body of work might be of interest to you to weave your "magic" upon...thanks & subbed...
the ambassadors 5:08 is a real special painting. The obscure object in the middle, on the floor is an anamorphic contorted skull. It can only be correctly seen from a specific angle (from which you usually wouldn't look at a painting).
If we can bring drawings, paintings and bust of ancient romans and old english royalty back to life. Then can you bring back some drawings, paintings and bust of true American heroes and maybe even some bad guys? Like Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Buffalo Bill, Jesse James, Kit Carson, Jim Bowie, Billy The Kid, U.S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Gen. Sherman etc.. The list of Americans go on and on! Just Saying??
Amazing portraiture of that period.
What an incredible painter, thanks to him we were able to see people as they were back in time. Thanks MS for always giving us great stuff to look at.
Просто волшебно!И музыка замечательная.
Agree!

Anne of Cleves looking beautiful as usual.
Hans was certainly talented and completed alot of paintings 🖼 in his lifetime!
New subscriber channel is amazing. I would love to see Thomas More come alive if possible. Thanks

Slight typo, Sir Thomas Mo'o're at The Frick Collection.
Interesting. I enjoy artists recognizable styles I think my favorite was Titian bit not same time period
How much they had to pay so Holbein would make a paintjng of them. How much was it in this time?
What an amazing artist!
I like the one of Catherine Howard.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing. I always learn something new.
Beautiful!! Loved seeing these!
What a collection! Thank you very much!

Holbein was lucky to escape getting beheaded…
@@MysteryScoop I'm just sayin' ........He continued with some fine work after Anne.

Charles de Solier got the alpha look.
Did he hate his wife and kids?

Beautiful gallery. Remarkable. Thanks MS👌
🤗
Definitely Manhattan ! ! !
I enjoy these
Thank you very much for the video! Hans Holbein Jr is one of my favorite portrait paintors along with François Clouet!

Talented, but the portrait of his wife and children....not a loving family man perhaps?
I wondered the same thing. Lacks feeling, lacks everything I guess. His wife looks very, very unhappy and exhausted.
