  • This is a clip from a conversation with the founder of We Love Hip Hop Canada, Friday Ricky Dred. We had an interview scheduled to talk about the Canadian perspective on Drake v Kendrick Lamar. Then this morning we saw Rick Ross' team get beatdown by Hells Angels in Vancouver. So this sorta reaction video turns into an explosion of perspective.

Rick Ross did not get stomped out. He does not understand American culture, the 'N' word and the significance of Hell Angels saying the 'N' word. That is a racist far-right organization. The Hell Angels did not say the 'N' word becasue of rap. That makes Drake even more suspect.

It is shocking that this guy does not see it, maybe because he's Canadian. I didn't see it before but now I'm seeing signs of it There is a chance that Drake could get kicked out of the culture for things like this and that would literally be the end of him. Drake & OVO are the ones who escalated at each point. Dont blame, "rap beef"
When Like That came out, Baka or Chubbz threatened violence online.
Cash XO's security guard got shop up FIRST.
Drake mentioned Whitney FIRST in Push Ups then insulted her AGAIN in Family Matters. Dot warned him twice before MTG.
Rick Ross was physically attacked FIRST.
He dissed Rihanna 1st. He dissed Serena's husband 1st. He brought up Pusha's wife 1st. Drake is weird.
Drake & OVO love to attack people FIRST then "love to play victim" when people hit back.

Pac & Biggie was on some other stuff that wasn't hip-hop. Stop blaming hip-hop for all the social ills in the black community when it was created to give us an outlet. If Americans introduced the word, then why are you pretending like you don’t understand it. You literally just explained that you do understand it 😅
He’s also lying about Fat Joe. People been complaining about him damn near my whole life lol
However, he does have a point in that hip hop has become so popular that the version of the n word that black people use may be the most prevalent form of the word. A few generations from now black people will be giving them a pass. I see young black people do it in social media already.

Canadian here to offer some perspective and education on Canadian gangs to Americans. Firstly, yes there is gang culture in Canada, but it is very unlike American gang culture. Broadly, most street level gangs in the country are indigenous or immigrant gangs that form out of poverty. There are also gangs formed from young middle class kids who idolize American and Chinese (triad) gang culture, but these gangs are less significant. The Hell's Angles control nearly all of Canada's organized crime and use these smaller gangs as "mules" to facilitate street level activities. The reason the Hell's Angels are so powerful is because they have strong connections in every major city, as well as have support from America.
As for the incident in Vancouver, it's hard to say why the Hell's Angles felt the need to personally attack Rick Ross. Vancouver has a large enough population to cultivate its own gang culture, which consists mostly of triads and immigrant gangs. The last I heard, the Hell's Angels influence was waning in that city due to the drug trade from China. They were likely operating for Drake, as they are also involved in the music industry.
Drake's popularity in Canada is also not very well understood by Americans. Speaking anecdotally, western Canada does not view Drake with the same amount of respect that he would get in Toronto or Montreal. There is a pretty major cultural divide between eastern and western Canada, and Drake at best is seen as just another pop star who happens to be from Toronto. Vancouver is a lot more connected culturally to the Pacific Northwest and California than it is to Toronto.

I came up as the only non-black person in my group of friends, and they gave me an N word pass but I had to thank them, but politely decline. That word doesn’t belong in my vocabulary. As much as I love them to the point that I refer to them as my brothers steal to this day I just got a job doing construction where I was traveling the country. I just thought it would be corny if someone heard me use that word what are you supposed to do? “Hey, I’ve got a note.” I always thought that would be corny. I love hip-hop. I love my friends, but I don’t need a word that could possibly offend someone who doesn’t know me a part of my vocabulary. You see people use the excuse “oh it was an accident that were just slipped out.” if that word wasn’t a part of the vocabulary, it wouldn’t slip out.

Ngl I'm kind of taken aback by the comments. I thought this was a pretty insightful conversation. Yeah, obviously Ricky putting the blame for the spread of the n-word globally squarely on Hip-Hop's shoulders is certainly a take, but once he broke it down from his perspective, it made sense why he would say that. Neither Ricky or Justin were wrong, just different perspectives coming together to try to piece together the whole truth.

I get it, there are hoods worldwide and as Americans, we don't really recognize that. A lot of us tend to think we're the toughest and have it the roughest, but really the biggest thing we have on em is hust the amount of guns we have in this country.
But also, who was talking about doing something to Drake in the beef? This was supposed to be a friendly fade, Drake took it there.

The context that the speculation given @ around 12:58, highlights the fact at the core issues with what drake represents: if what defends and protects aubrey at home is his association with a white supremacist group like hells angels, what the fuck is he in support of? Fucking nazi sympathizers are not like us.
16:17 his angle on the n-word, despite mentioning the value of context, doesn't really seem to fully grasp said context, he (or anyone interested in learning more and somehow has the time) could definitely benefit from looking into the actual historical context of the word and it's use. I'd recommend checking out "Theory from the South: a decolonial approach to the psychology of global inequality" by Adams Glenn and Sara Estrada-Villalta and "The English-Only Debate" by Alejandro Portes. Different perspectives are valuable, especially when they can be used to explore what's being observed critically and with depth. Not a fan of this victim blaming shit, to be honest.
23:48 hmmm... Dude, this guest is starting to look like the person described in Complexion, the issues he's describing is that people aren't fucking critical in their intentions, the reason he started using more rhymes with the n-word is because he literally just said he found it easier to do, if there's a problem with his use of the n-word, it's because he's using it as fucking crutch because it provides him the easier option... jegus fuck....
32:03 This dude can only frame his issues in reference to black people despite the earlier discussion about canadian hells angels involvement with the rick ross incident and connections to aubrey, vibes are so fucking off with him... 33:09 ...
Even with my personal push backs on what the guest express, I do think Justin did a great job pushing back on his points and driving the conversation to points that explore the context of what this topic can show us about culture and and history, suppose not all guest can be like Professor Skye.

    (1) there are people around the world - in any nation - desperate to prove a point using violence. Not having access to the guns doesn't mean there aren't numerous other ways to be violent. Especially if they feel their nation or culture is being labeled as soft.
    (2) if you look at the timing of stuff Drake was doing on his social media this weekend, there seems to be some interesting pre-brawl flexing from him after a period of relative silence.
    (3) If Drake is a symbol of pride among the Canadian street gangs, I wonder if or how their loyalty changes should any of the stuff about partying with minors explored in @whatsthedirt's "616 in LA" breakdown gets fleshed out with actual video footage, statements from girls, etc. Is it unconditional loyalty? And is that offered to all Canadian artists? Only hip-hop? Only Drake? Only Canadian artists who avoid talking about the social issues that Canadians like K'Naan and k-os spent their whole careers exploring?
    (4) if this is more a Hells Angels thing, why is Drake - a Black Jewish man - celebrating that connection if there's even a debate about whether or not they are a white supremacist org?
    (5) why aren't any of the artists involved in this other than Kendrick promoting unity among their sections and actually rapping as the main way of competing, instead of violence?

This guys point on the n-word would barely hold water back in 2008.its 2024, we're not having convos about "is it okay if --" anymore. Ignorance isnt an excuse anymore.
Thinking about it now, one of thw big moments about this topic was the kendrick concert where the white girl sang m.a.a.d city. Even at the time i thought that was kinda foul of him, but listening to this guy he needed to get that point out.
