    In this video I am going over how to perform a compression test on your e36 generation 6 cylinder engine. This compression test process will work on most any internal combustion type of engine, but please research specifics for your particular vehicle.
    The compression test will tell us how healthy the engine is and whether or not it is due for a rebuild. Since I have plans to take my e36 track car to events like Gridlife, Global Time Attack, Super Lap Battle, and others, I first wanted to make sure the engine was up to the task!

    Hi, great video,
    should the test be done when the engine is cold or do i have to warm it up ?

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! It can be done either way, what matters is the results are within tolerance of each other. Testing on a warm engine can produce more accurate results of actual compression numbers, just be careful cause everything is hot 😄

    Try engine restore. It really improved compression tests results in my armada. I flushed with seafoam first though

    Have you met Eric Anderson? He TTed an E36 then turned it into a gts3 car and won the 2018 season with it. If not let me know and I’ll get you his contact info.

    Thanks mate, what would be the issue if I have 1 to 5 cylinder with 200 psi, and cyl n° 6 with 140-145 psi? I have the same car.. many thanks!

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  3 года назад +1

      Your #6 cylinder piston has worn or bad rings most likely. So air is getting past the piston rings since they cannot keep a good seal against the cylinder walls, resulting in loss of compression and ultimately power/efficiency.

      I have these same numbers but mine is cylinder 3. Can I still drive the car for say another couple months and then do a motor swap or don’t drive the car? Looking at my options and I’m not ready to swap the motor

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  2 года назад +1

      Sure it is fine to drive it, as long as nothing is leaking or anything. The engine will just make less power .

    hey justin..what was the mileage on the engine?.....did it run well?... how is it these days?....you showed us 150 ish...howw did you get to 160-70?

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  2 года назад

      Mileage was 205k when this was done I believe. It ran very well all the way up to when I pulled it and swapped in an s52. Not sure what you mean by the last sentence, the numbers on the cardboard are what I ended up with. I didn't do anything but the tests.

      @@TheBTRGarage Im looking at a nice s52 m3...w/ 199k.... but it shows 156 across all 6..... most s52s show 175-200.... early in your vid you showed us 15o something? at around 5 25 in......

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  2 года назад

      Oh, it was 160, I just didn't do a full reading of the gauge and generalized 150. If you look close at the gauge it is 160 or 159'ish. My s52 had lower compression that this engine. Don't worry about the value too much compared to others. You just want the compression # to be as close as possible across all cylinders, then it's usually fine.

    • @alpeena
      @alpeena 2 года назад +1

      @@TheBTRGarage Im just a wee bit worried its kinda low?...155.....but they are all even!.....btw, your lil one is just great......

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  2 года назад

      My s52 was 140 across the board on compression test (in Denver altitude). After getting dyno tuned it made 238whp and 235lbs.ft. of torque. Which is right in the range for an s52. As long as #'s are good I think you'll be ok. You could do a leakdown test if you wanted for additional piece of mind.

    Do you need to make sure that all the other spark plugs are in while doing the compression test?

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  Год назад

      I leave them in, but it shouldn't matter much either way.
