Her story about finding Monster Squad on dvd in middle school makes me feel soooo old. It took FOREVER to come out on dvd so my VHS is still to this day one of my most cherished items
Yes! I remember going with my dad to Best Buy and we were looking for it and the employee had no idea what we were talking about and nothing online for it. Circa 2009
Casey's absolute love for this movie is so wonderfully wholesome. This was one of my favorites as a kid, still love it today.
Casey reading the back of the vhs tape really reminded me of an elementary school teacher reading to her classroom.
When Dracula goes “Give me the amulet, you b!tch!” To the little girl. 😂
Only in the 80s baby!!!!!....hell yeah!!!! The 80s were better for movies than the crap they pump out now.
How else would they cement that dracula is evil? By having him curse at a 5yr old girl.
@@Anubis.6256 Back when they weren't afraid to let characters go as dark as they needed!
"Wolfman's Got Nards!"
It's also the title of a Monstersquad documentary that's worth watching.
"Creature stole my twinkie!"
I love that Casey is both a hard-core horror fan that also doesn't curse. I want to see her step on a Lego and be like "gee golly willickers!"
BAREFOOT!!! ;)
WOLFMAN'S GOT NARDS!
He sure the hell does
Wolfman actor also played a wolf/vampire hybrid in Fright Night 2 (1988). He was awesome in that as well!. You guys should do that one someday!
Yes he did. Uncle Ricko got around.🤣
Really enjoyed hearing Casey's stories about/deep-connections with this film
"I'm in the Goddamned club, aren't I?" My favorite moment in a movie FILLED with great moments.
Thanks for the review, guys! Loved it.
Love Casey's enthusiasm for this film.
Welcome back to the store, Casey. I hope Uncle Tony's being on his best behavior with you unlike with Crystal, Joanna, and Mint Salad.
It was quite a few years back that I even discovered this movie from both a Retro Junk article and an i-Mockery review, and I just HAD to see it because I just KNEW I would love it. That NEVER happens--and I actually paid for the DVD in 2018 without seeing it first. ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. The club of kids who are monster movie fans, Sean and his dad watching the movie on the roof, fighting the best version of Dracula ever when he tried to take over the world, and of course Sean giving Van Helsing a thumbs up:):) In the commentary, Fred Dekker said he came up with it because he wanted to see what would happen if The Little Rascals met the Universal Monsters, and that sounds EXACTLY like how I come up with stories! I also learned about the Twilight Zone Movie tragedy, sadly, but I also discovered the 'It's a Good Life' segment. THEN I realized that he wrote 'Tales From the Crypt: And All Through the House' that was directed by my favorite director, and MAN, did that blow my mind! And that fake sequel trailer is the BEST EVER, totally the definition of 'by fans FOR fans':):)
My first reference to this movie was a Black Dahlia Murder song in middle school: soon the creatures of the night will rule the world…and there is NO ONE to STOP US!!! RIP Trevor Strnad!
We need a Crystal and Casey team up episode!
My older brother is 8 years older than I am. As a kid, I was always fascinated my horror movie, but my parents wouldn’t let me (I ended up having a few nightmares and they put a stop to it) but my brother was a movie guy too, and had my back. Our local video store had a copy of this and he rented it for me telling my parents “it’s like the goonies”. Then he got a job at that video store, and I made him bring it home every weekend it wasn’t rented!
Jonathan Gries has more horror credentials than most people realize. He's really good in TerrorVision and Fright Night Part 2, both of which I would enjoy seeing you cover one day.
I'm almost 40. When I was really young there was a little video rental place next to my day care. My dad would take me there every day and I could rent 2 movies. For a couple years I would rent Monster Squad, and The Beast master just about every day. The Monster Squad was my very first favorite movie many years before it ever came out on dvd
When I was around the age of these kids, my best friend lived across the street from the Tulsa drive-in and you are right. It was so awesome to climb up on his roof, tune the radio to the station and watch all the new movies.
How about a Goonies review with Joe Lascola Coca Cola and the Sean Machine.
I saw Monster Squad twice in the theatre in 1987. It was instantly my favorite movie and still is to this day. I love that you are covering this movie.
Now, a few things to note:
Michael Faustino aka Eugene works as a Sound guy now. Not Cinematographer.
The Wolf man was named Lawrence Talbot in the original series. Not "Glen Talbot".
The reason they put armadillo in the original Dracula was because in 1931 it was considered indecent to show rats on screen.
Also, did you call Nosferatu "Nasferada" ?
Yes. Yes you did.
Really Famous Tony, just going through stuff I missed! Forget sequels, reboots but we need a a cracking 4k restoration of this!!!
My 12 and 10 year old kids love this and you don't mess with this masterpiece
It took FOREVER for them to stream and come out with a bluray/dvd of this movie. I never understood why it took so long for them to remaster it. Everyone I know loved the movie. It was one of the few Halloween movies we were allowed to watch as kids.
The director said that it wasn’t till 2006 when he found out his film had a huge following and I guess thats when they decided to remaster it on dvd
@@TransKingFormers If I remember correctly the DVD was a direct xfer to DVD but still lower quality. I know I had a bootleg DVD that I used to watch for years since it's a yearly movie I always watch. I think the best quality version I ever found was on streaming. I can see they have dates on like 20th version and I think I have that one laying around but I swear it was still vhs quality. Which I understand happens when there are practical sfx compared to any post filming specials effects. Perfect example is Explorers. That movie was 100% practical effects so when they re-released it the quality was amazing. Again no hate some of these older movies are so amazing to what comes out now a days. I get there is a little nostalgia but older movies were just so well written.
@@dbradford259 I have it on Blu ray and the quality is OK only big name movies backed by big studios get that proper remastering like getting rid of dirt, hair and finger prints such like Disney
@@TransKingFormers I'd have to think at some point someone like SHOUT Factory or Arrow Video etc. will put out a proper blu-ray, or even 4k with a new transfer. Seems like the kind of movie those companies like to put out.
I didn't hear them mention it, but I like how they foreshadowed something that happened to the Wolfman. When they were talking about other ways to kill one, Sean suggests, "Falling out a window...onto a bomb!" And later on, the Wolfman gets shoved out of a window with dynamite in his pants!
The foreshadowing in this movie is epic. The mummy walking away, the Wolfman, and the candle blowing out. It's more intelligent than people give it credit for.
The Monster Squad is awesome, not only did a Werewolf uncle Rico get kicked in the nards, but also got blown up.. nards and all. and the Monsters are defeated by the power of Rammstein lyrics.
the actor was also in Fright Night 2 as a vampire/werewolf character too
@@urrutiap yup, him & Shao Kahn are Regina Dandridge's henchmen. He was also cool in "TerrorVision" as O.D.
Monster squad was one of my favorites as a kid right up there with Ghostbusters 2 and Mac and Me! But honestly it's awesome!
Damn! She got some great taste in movies!
I grew up watching this movie as a kid on video. As time goes by, I noticed certain things. Like Sean's parents having a marital Rift during the film leading to the mother walking out until Dracula showed up.
Never noticed a minor detail until the 2 disc DVD came out years ago. the mother had a suitcase in the living room or hallway and was about to leave or have the father leave after the divorce. Then Dracula came and blew up the treehouse
I saw this film when it was released on VHS in England. It was rated 15 over here so my brother rented it when he was babysitting me as I was 11. Love this film 😊🐾💜
I was in Middle School when this movie came out, I wasn't able to see it in the theater but we rented it. This movie still does Blow Me Away. It's so rare to have a movie written for kids that doesn't talk down to kids. All too often, these days, movies have to dumb it down because they don't want to upset or scare the child.
It did have some of that inescapable 80s teen film drama, but it had some really weighty matters all considered. The werewolf is begging to die and thanks them when he does, Frankenstein turning to the side of good makes sense when you consider his Origins, and how they all get brought into the town is believable. I even like when they meet the old man and there's a to me fairly subtle kind of commentary that not all evil is a monster because he survived World War II.
Like you I rushed out to buy this movie on DVD when it came out I can't wait to show it to my nephews, I'm sure by now there's a Blu-ray release and I'll probably add that to my collection
I was a little kid the 80s, all the boys used *that* word pretty casually.
Incidentally, Mary Ellen Trainer plays the same anchorman in Richochet that she did in Die Hard.
I grew up watching Monster Squad when it came on HBO then Id watch the movie on an old VHS recording time over and over all the time back then. These days I have the 2 disc DVD anniversary edition for the movie and I still watch the movie
Wow I haven't seen that movie since I was a young lad. I used to watch it all the time in the VHS days. Thank you for bringing it out of the shadows of my mind
I remember going to see this movie when it came out in theaters. it was so packed that they were forced to open the balcony section. they never allowed anyone to sit up there unless they had a huge crowd, which was rare. only other times they did this was for the showings of 'Night of the Creeps', Rambo 3, Invaders from Mars. I still remember sitting up in the balcony for Monster Squad, Creeps and Invaders.
the town was also used for the show Pretty Little Liars. they kept using the church in many episodes.
My mom rented this when my dad was about deploy to Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm back in 1990-91. So it has sentimental value
My brother and I love this movie. When his daughter, Phoebe, was born I immediately bought her a stuffed Frankenstein. In addition I say "Bye Phoebe" like Frankenstein getting sucked into the vortex, every time I see her.
Doctor Frankenstein built the Monster. The Monster calls him "Father". Hence, both the Doctor AND the Monster are Frankenstein. I will die on this goddamn hill.
For some reason I have always had the memory of the scene of Frankenstein's Monster getting sucked into the portal. I have never known the movie it was from, or if it was a fake memory. Finally I know the movie and I'm not insane. Thank you
Your guests voice is unbelievable. It's like she has compression built in, it sounds exactly the same level throughout she should be an announcer or voice actor. No shade is meant to be thrown. I am listening at my job, a steel factory and her voice cuts through everything in a way Tony's does not.
You're right Tony literally caught this movie on TV one random night in the 90s and could never find it afterwards. Favorite monster is Christopher Lee Dracula.
Im 26 bought the dvd in middle school probably around 2009 and didn’t realize it was a long time coming wish i still had that dvd
This is so awesome!! The Monster Squad is a really fun movie. Thanks
I have that song on vinyl. They did a limited release a few years ago with variants based on each monster. So there’s some nerdy shirt for everyone!
Saw it as a new release when I was six and cried my fucking eyes out when Phoebe threw Scraps into limbo for Frank...
Still do.
Rudy became my childhood hero thanks to this movie (hot take, right?). Also, "Meeting adjourned..." has to be one of the greatest villain one-liners ever. 🌳🏡💥
I was lucky enough to grow up with this movie. I actually had the 2006 DVD as a kid and would watch it all the time. The Creature and The Wolf Man's transformation in the phonebooth terrified me as a kid. This movie is definitely underrated.
I had never even heard of this movie until it got re-released on DVD but man, I wish I had this movie when growing up
JON GRIES played a Monster in FRIGHT NIGHT PART 2 which was Released the Following year in 1988 after he played THE WOLFMAN in MONSTER SQUAD
First time was when I rented it on VHS just based on the cover. Probably around 1992-94. I remember Monster in my pocket was huge at the time
Casey is just so sweet and kind and also really hot. I love her enthusiasm for horror movies and her adorable reactions to stuff, one of the best guest on @HackTheMovies and I hope she is on a lot more episodes moving forward.
I just watched this movie for the first time last night, and now this is being uploaded lol.
/b/ is like a curse you learn to live with and eventually can't live without.
Top 80s “Horror” Movies with a Rap Song Over The Credits:

Ghostbusters II - Spirit
This is my favorite, rental-store-based, movie review channel.
If I remember correctly the 🕯 that is supposed to keep the monsters away is out on the 🪟 when Dracula blows up the club house.
Casey, you are a treasure and a glorious presence in Tony's store.
Tony, you are.......present!
😎
The last time Tony was in LA the Hollywoodland sign partly disappeared, and that's how we have Hollywood.
after the weaponized pizza/garlic bread all i imagined was swapping out pocket sand for garlic powder
I've introduced this movie to lots of people. I absolutely love this film.
I remember seeing this when I was a kid in the 80's I didnt see it in the theater but saw it on rental video. Was a favorite of mine back then and still love this movie. I have it on Bluray
Jason Hervey (the bully) now owns a tv production company and worked behind the scenes with Eric Bischoff in WCW before it was sold, and is in business with Bischoff currently? Last I heard anyway
I remember waiting for years before they put it on DVD. I was lucky that this was one that my parents taped when they rented it
VIDEO PIRACY!
We need a vampire movie where the vampire calls himself "Alucard Dracula" and the hero still can't figure out who the vampire is until they write the name backward.
Its funny that casey calls tony out and says he missed the wolfman kill. Tony says it's coming up and to trust him, then he misses it 😂🤣
redemption! the rental review of this was awful
Hearing James throw his toys out the pram at the film's politically incorrect humour was hilarious. Never mind that he must have grown up during that period, or that films are often the product of their time. So funny.
I really love that I got a Burger King ad during this specific review.
I would really love a remake with modern horror villains man
Just finished watching this now. My all time faves
Monster Squad is my all-time #1 favorite movie, ever. :D
Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein ?
Just watched it after listening to TESD
Man, I've just watched the entire MummyCop series and I want more. A prequel, and a far future set mummycop blade runner mash up. The mummycop - the desert corp a spin off during WWII, where he is covered in sand, after that he returns to create the first ever Wrap Up Team, where he joins other creatures and fights a secret mafia organization known as the octopus.
Great movie to introduce kids to the classic horror monsters. My kids 5 and he loves this flick
Casey is great.. finally found somebody who loves this movie as much as I do. i got my Stephen King Rules shirt
So I'm a bit of a crazy person when it comes to this movie - I have a tattoo of the drawing of the amulet from the diary. Hyped to see you covering it, will forever be one of my favs and special for me
dude! you are crazy!
Saw this in the theatre when it came out been my favorite movie ever since
Now I expect you to plug mummy cop, no excuses about your friends forgetting this time
I could be wrong but I think Dracula is in the house on shadowbrooke lane. The yard sale was for that house cause the resident died or moved. So he probably bought the house. Found out about the sale and doesn’t want the journal out there for the forces of hood to use.
"WOLFMAN'S GOT NARDS" Love this movie.
I want to see a JEEPERS CREEPERS video with JOHANNA and CRYSTAL as guests.
Hey Mr. Tony. You've got me interested in Mummy Cop. Where can I watch it? And obviously I mean for free.
50:20 there goes Tony talking about batman again 😂😂😂😂😂
Never forget about the time where Count Dracula called a little girl a bitch. God I love the 80s.
I think the “Is he the one who fights Godzilla” is a reference to Godzilla vs Frankenstein
Favorite Halloween movie! grew up with this.
The car in the film is a 1960 or 61? Cadillac hearse. It’s similar to the 59 Cadillac ambulance from ghostbusters. One of the most beautiful cars in history.
Have you thought of doing a Mummy Cop review; either get everyone except Tony talking about it, or Tony just explaining and defending it from others who haven't see it, like Casey? Could be a fun thing to do for a anniversary episode - of the show or Mummy Cop itself :D
The Invisible Man is in Monster Squad...you just can't see him.
Drink every time Tony says "What not".
they reference hitting a werewolf with a silver cane in the chipmunks meet the wolfman too
I agree with Casey, monster squad is great but it's not on the same level as the lost boys. You can't beat that soundtrack. My all time favorite movie!
I still have this on VHS, except it's the bulky split case rather than the cardboard slide.
In italy this movie is called "Scuola di Mostri" (monster school)
Casey's reaction to Tonys stakes comment...mint salad is no longer bae hellllo Casey 😎
Monster Squad rules! and I watched Halloween 8 again. ...famous Tony from Batman.
The Invisible Man was there literally the whole time. The WHOLE TIME.
Also the Monster tells Victor (in the book) that he read papers making Victor his father and creator. Carrying his father's last name could lead to people calling the monster Frankenstein. If you think about "creator" and the Monster being the first son of Victor, he could be called Adam. I, Frankenstein of all fucking movies was onto something. Lol.
Back when the 20th DVD came out I was writing a sequel about the Squad when they’re older. Because Rudy and Sean looked like they’d become pretty cool adults! Horace would have to be recast unfortunately Christian Bale?? 😆 but the boys grew up and continued fighting the forces of evil, Rudy is like the muscle Sean’s the brains Horace became the tech guy in the “van”. Zombies, Gill Men (plural) Lilith , Dracula’s daughter is trying to bring back her father she just needs Phoebe’s blood to do it..
Scary German guy is ride or die! 😆
just took a peak at Casey’s twitter, two thumbs up! 🎉
The detective turned into the invisible man.
Later this year they'll be releasing The Monster Squad in 4K.
Yes do jeepers creepers. I haven't seen the new one yet but so far 3 is my worse just having the creeper in the daylight just really kills the vibe. I did like the truck though
