I need help fixing one of my wheels. I bought one of the die cast cars at a yard sale. Everything is perfect but the fact that the drivers’ side wheel is broken off of the car. Is there a way to buy new parts?
Clay we need to see you work your magic as you do a step by step AMAZING Super detailed NASCAR build video on here... your fan base wants it... no better yet we need it...😂
Clay, just found your channel, I've been following your building for years in the articles you write. It will be great to see you preform the magic that you do with models. Thanks for becoming part of the you-tube modeling community.
thanks for making the video on these tire details. I started using this technique on my scratch built slot cars. They really enhance the look of them. Cheers!
Really strong rubbing alcohol works too. But the lacquer thinner softens the tire up just enough the decal sticks better. But it depends on the tire too. Some tires are just too slick and need some sort of clear first otherwise it will silver on you.
Hey Clay! Just wanted to say great job so far on your channel. Seems you recently started making videos, but I'm really enjoying your work and look forward to more content! Keep up the great work!
Just found this channel and subbed and rang the bell. I also enjoy looking at your masterpieces on your Fotki Clay. Looking forward to some great how to vids.
I'm currently building two Older NASCAR Kit's one from Salvino JR and one from the Older monogram editions! 8 could use some tips on getting around sub assembly and paint procedures! Trying to build as much as it can before primer time and paint!
Hi Clay! Really love your work! I’m planning a detailed build of the old Monogram Uno Buick and want to the same thing with these exact same wheels. My questions are, why did you paint the “O” in Goodyear, yellow? The three yellow marks on the rim edge, are those wheel weight locations? Also, other that the “LF” would this be the exact same procedure on all four wheels? Thanks!
Great video Clay. Good job on this one. I've got a 3D printer. One of these days I'm gonna try and make a stencil for the GOODYEAR EAGLE but not sure IF it will cut a hole that small.
Clay do you have a how to for removing kit lugs nuts so I can replace them with brass nuts to move remove able wheels. I tried a dremel but, it left scars that were not easy to fill.
Hi! those wheels look killer. A couple of questions: why put the wheel in before spraying the flat. Would'nt it be simpler to spray before putting the wheels in and avoid masking the wheel? I'm not a NASCAR guy, what is the yellow/chrome on the wheels for. Would valve stems make them pop a bit more? I make mine with craft wire.
The yellow on the wheel first simulates the glue they used to use to hold the wheel weights on besides the little band over the rim edge. The white lines just show where a wheel weight is (was) located in case they fall off.
Just wondering why you switched the tires, the first tired that you put the 23 on, was definitely not the one you ended up with. Just wondering. Just started following your channel, love your attention to detail.
I was confused by your comment so I had to go back and re-watch it myself. it was the same tire, I think what happened was I wasn't happy with the first "23" so I wiped it off and painted a better one. It was still the same tire. Just new number painted on.
Quick question, you painted the “O” yellow, was that specific to the team, or would the do that to quickly know which was left side and which was right side? And when did they start doing this? Thanks.
I just tried to do what you did on the Monogram 5 Slot wheels clay! I screwed up! I cut down too far! Instead of only cutting the top step! I cut the bottom! That was my fault! Now I only have three wheels! I'm in the hunt for a replacement!
Nice video ! I do have a question. When you brush the decal with Micro-Sol (the hotter red bottle), if the decal wrinkles after applying it -- do you do anything ? Or will it flatten out as it dries ? Thanks!
Correct, usually it will level off on its own. I will place the tires under my desk lamp and the heat from the bulb is usually enough to get it to shrink itself down.
@@ClayKemp Thanks for taking the time to reply. I tried this over the weekend and did not have very good luck. I used Micro Set when applying the decals to the tire and let that dry for 1 hour. Then I applied a coat of Micro Sol over the decals and set the tires aside. The next morning I'm seeing little wrinkles in the clear carrier film between the letters -- it didn't flatten out. I tried applying a bit more Micro Sol to one of them, but it caused the edges to "lift" and curl up. :-( I'm wondering if I should not have waited an hour before applying the Micro Sol ? Or maybe some heat (i.e. low setting on hair dryer) is needed when you apply the Micro Sol ? I'm probably going to have to strip these decals off and start over again. Thanks for any help/advice you could give.
@@jefffritsche9974 Sorry you had trouble Jeff! It may depend on your tires too. On this set here, I think they were newer Salvino tires, they were more of a softer black plastic, so once I cleaned them, they were tacky enough to get the decals to bite too. But on like the older Monogram Nascar tires, you just about have to clear them first. I use any clear lacquer from the can. Something like Tamiya TS-13 works well. I'm guessing your sidewalls were just too slick for the decals to grab on to. Give them a shot of clear, then try to decal again. Then hit them with the dull coat.
@@ClayKemp Hi thanks for taking the time to reply. Yeah the tires I tried it with were the older '80s and 90's Monogram kit tires. I've had the same advice from several others -- spray a coat of gloss clear lacquer on them first -- before decals. I also tested with a couple of Salvinos JR NASCAR kit tires and had the same poor results. I went ahead and sprayed the same clear flat that you used in the video on them and the entire "Goodyear" decal had a "frosted" look -- over the letters and the clear film. I'm using Powerslide decals from Mikes Decals (they always are top shelf) -- so I doubt it's the decals. But others have commented that unless you spray clear gloss before decals, the decals will "sliver" when the flat is sprayed over them. So -- I'll try that next (on both types of tires) -- spray with clear gloss Tamiya lacquer and then decal. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to this. Regards.
@Clay Kemp - Spraying the Monogram tires with Tamiya gloss clear lacquer first and then applying the Goodyear decals (using Micro Set and low heat from a hair dryer) worked great. I was able to then spray them with the Mr Hobby flat and they look great. Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my comments !

Great video Clay, the wheels and tires look amazing. I'm so glad to see that your finally on RUclips.

You make it look so easy, such a steady hand ✍️👍🏻🤗
Niiiice! Well done. Like that you used lacquer thinner on the sidewalls. I was wasting time sanding them.

Amazing work on the tires!!
Nice super detailing.
I never noticed anyone with a yellow on the O in the goodyear on the tire. I will have to look at old photo's and check it out. Nice video.

What do the marks and numbers indicate on the tires? And the color coding!
WOW Clay that looks awesome. Great how to. Just subbed you. Ron

Is there an inner half of the wheel that has the mounting hole or dowel that gets pushed onto the hub?

Only thing missing is the valve. Outta stock?
Good catch....I meant to add one. And totally forgot until after I was done.

The tire looks fantastic, but it would have helped if you showed how you corrected the setback on the wheel? Rebuild the hub or dowel, or what?
Clay, where did you find a set of 80's Monogram tires that was pre stamped in black?
Inspiring video!
Have you ever used flat to tone down the stock chrome? Might be worth trying on the sprue.
Clay do you have a how to for removing kit lugs nuts so I can replace them with brass nuts to move remove able wheels. I tried a dremel but, it left scars that were not easy to fill.
Clay, is it by any chance you could make longer videos? You have a few tricks up your salve as i do also that i would like to possibly share with you.

wheel weights.... although it's kinda funny to have 2 of them on the same side, oriented like that.
I would like to see you try this with a 9 hole wheel
awesome work man. perfect!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Awesome detail truck's! I'm going to try that! Does the trick for opening up the wheel slot's work for the ten hole as well?
I do them exactly the same...
Excellent detail work. It shows in you builds. WHOS THE MORON WITH THE THUMBS DOWN!? Thanks for sharing Clay.
LOL You'll have that I suppose. :)
Can you get these in 1/18?
Hi Clay, would you mind explaining what each of the markings mean? Especially where it looks like you were painting wheel weights.
The yellow on the wheel first simulates the glue they used to use to hold the wheel weights on besides the little band over the rim edge. The white lines just show where a wheel weight is (was) located in case they fall off.
@@ClayKemp you are the best!
Great work of art!
Can black paint be thin enough to use as panel line accent wash? Or is it something totally different?
For sure....black acrylic paint works great thinned down for washes.
@@ClayKemp Thanks for answering!
I’m
Confused on painting little
Yellow lines on the rim, and then painting over them
In silver? Can someone explain?
The yellow simulates the glue they used to use to hold the weights on. The silver is the actual wheel weight itself.
What is the yellow 'O' for ?
Just something I noticed on some reference pictures from the 80's. Not exactly sure why they did that.
Where did you get the nascar tires that don't have the raised lettering on them?
The newer Salvino kits have smooth sidewalls. Or if you are using the older tires, juts flip them over. The back side is usually smooth.
Just wondering why you switched the tires, the first tired that you put the 23 on, was definitely not the one you ended up with. Just wondering.

I'm not sure of the exact reason they did that. I kept seeing it showing up in reference pictures, so I tried to duplicate it.

Clay, what size is the brush you're using for the paint for the LF and markings on the tires?
