      I watched that match on TV back in 2017 and it was one hell of a rollercoaster, but after rewatching it recently on this channel (thank you so much, @AustralianOpenTV!) when knowing the result, I couldn't help but think that Roger just wanted to play 5 sets of high quality tennis with Rafa. Like ok, first 4 sets we'll do an exhibition and then we're playing the 5th properly.

      he only lose by his own unforce error..

    • @samrit123in
      @samrit123in 8 лет назад +1

      True. Especially the backhand error. In his prime the Rafa Forehand average was 3,200 rpm spin, and it peaked at 5000 rpm. By point of comparison, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi hit topspin shots at around 1,800 rpm. Its very difficult for players with one handed backhand (like Federer) to retaliate. Thats why one handed backhand players like Stan Wawrinka, Nicolas Almagro and Richard Gasquet never, literally NEVER beat Rafa when he was in his prime.

    • @twinwankel
      @twinwankel 8 лет назад +1

      Amrit Swain Most had the wrong strategy. McEnroe had advocated taking the ball early on Rafa and not waiting behind the baseline. Since a heavily hit top spin ball is slower, it's easier to hit early. It took Dimitrov and now Federer to realize the strategy. What took the tour that long to get this? This should work on clay too, since the court is even slower.

    • @samrit123in
      @samrit123in 8 лет назад +1

      Wally Friend I doubt that would have worked in his prime years. Even Djoker and Murray, with the two best returns in the game, suffered badly. Even if one did that, theres the Rafa mentality to beat too, guys an Apex Predator. Plus everything McEnroe says, i usually take that with a grain of salt.
      PS: if time travel did work in real life, i would have like to watch a Rafa vs Bjorn borg match, on the red clay of Roland Garros.

    • @twinwankel
      @twinwankel 8 лет назад

      Amrit Swain I think it would successful to any top spinner baseliner especially someone that hits with excessive top spin. But you have to have the talent to take ball early. Someone like Agassi uses it as part of his game and could beat Nadal regularly in his prime.

    You can tell how much respect Nadal and Federer have for each other - their rivalry constantly pushes them to be constantly at their best, which is why, despite facing earlier competition from the young blood rising up in the ranks, it was an absolute nostalgic treat to see them both play each other again in the finals after so long and when no one had expected them to - proof that you should never count anyone out so long as they're still willing to stay in the game.

    Can you name another sportsperson who is or was an absolute legend of their sport having a squeaky clean image. Even if you can dispute Fed's claim to GOAT you will be hard pressed to find one point negative against him regarding his on and off court conduct. Fans love him, the press loves him, sponsors loves him, perfect ambassador for his sport, ideal role model for his peers, married well with no multiple girlfriends drama, never caught being reckless in his personal life, even the tabloids can't find dirt on him, perfect husband, perfect father, what has he ever done wrong. I have never seen or head of athlete of his level that has lived their whole career in the public eye and never even put one toe out of line, it must be exhausting if you have to act perfect but he just is flawless. Usually someone achieves as much as he has will lack something, have a kryptonite. The only fault I can find in him is that he seems a little too OK with losing. I think lots of matches where he lost to Rafa can be attributed to this lax attitude where he just throws in the towel. But even that negative is a positive for him because that willingness to accept defeat has made him a graceful and humble champion, instead of the usual arrogance that plagues top athletes.

Federer and Laver both built so many stats in a lesser era than Nadal. Hence they look better. Nadal had to face Djokovic and Federer in their Primes. Laver 2 biggest rivals were past their best for much his reign.

      Tennis Fan he made it look easier and after loosing few times against Roger they all chose to give up. Nadal became great because he didn’t give up and not intimidated by Roger while being humble. Andy had a game for fast court at that time but was too much emotional and adored Roger more than required which affected his competitiveness. Nadal was competitive from start and once Novak developed the same confidence the results are in front of us.

    I think Roger's decision about retiring depens upon how the rest of the season develops. If he notices that, regardless these couple of weeks, he is not taking the taste again for all what being on tour implies, he may retire by the end of this season; if he has no problem with it and keeps playing at this level (which assures him at least winning a couple of tournaments, and perhaps one or two M1000 (another GS sounds like too much, but hey, he just did it!)), I think he may consider playing one more season; all that aside, even if he doesn't retire, I don't think he goes beyond 2018. I wish you never retired Roger, you're simply the best that has ever happened to this sport.

    P.S. So happy murray didn't make it far in this tournament, he looked quite strong at the start of the season.

      More than a dozen players have been world #1 longer than Nadal, and he has yet to win a world tour finals (2nd in importance to slams). He hasn't been consistent enough overall. He belongs behind Federer and Laver in a big group with the likes of Tilden, Budge, Gonzales, Rosewall, Borg, Sampras, Djokovic.

      He is likely to retire when he no longer thinks he can win another slam and/or is not enjoying tennis so much' I think he expects he can win another slam, e.g Wimbledon, to assure his place as the greatest.

    • @tennisfan4282
      @tennisfan4282 7 лет назад

      mizofan the so called greatest has a 9-18 slam record vs Nadal and Djokovic. He isn't the greatest,no body is. If the GOAT term was real the person would not have a losing record by that margin in slam matches. He is a great player obviously though.

    Well done and massive congratulations to Roger for finally ending his 5 year Grand Slam drought, somehow it had to be coming and it sure was a long time coming, even I lost the desire to see him win another Slam after he lost the 2015 Wimbledon and US Open finals to Djokovic but I couldn't be any happier he proved me wrong (feels only like yesterday I watched his 2012 Wimbledon victory over Murray). And well done to Rafa, he pushed Federer all the way and took the match to 5 sets and I can definitely see him winning another Slam (he definitely could win another French Open title) if he continues to play like this. In truth, both players were winners today and both are my ultimate Tennis idols (Federer always has been my all time favourite Tennis player and still is, but Nadal has grown on me throughout the years and if there is a Tennis duet I love, Its definitely Federer and Nadal aka Fedal).
    I am so glad and fortunate to have grown up with this Tennis era: an era with three greats in the forms of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, an era with other players making some success too like Murray, Wawrinka, Del Potro and Cilic, and an era with potential too for example players like Raonic, Nishikori and Thiem who still have chances to claim bigger success along with younger players (e.g. Alexander Zverev) who could potentially become part of a new generation of Grand Slam champions. Tennis is my favourite sport to watch for these very reasons - anything can happen. I don't think its fair on any of the players to say that any of their eras were weak, in fact none of their eras were truly weak, they just elevated their games above the others and dominated not to mention each have worked hard for their own successes and inspired many others. And I loved how humble both players were in their victory speeches here: definitely something a lot of their own fans (I don't mean every Federer and Nadal fan though) could learn in the longer term as its disappointing to see the disrespect directed towards both players (you don't have to like either player if you don't want but at least acknowledge their success).
