- In which John Green answers questions that people ask google about him, in an attempt to make this (and not that other video we won't mention) the top search result related to his name, which is John Green.
John Green is a writer and RUclipsr, or possibly a novelist and online video creator. (...he said, only for the purposes of improving the searchability of this video.)

The first video that shows up when you search Hank Green is a video by The Business Insider titled "How Hank Green became one of the Internet's most influential educators"
.......I'm sorry John.
wisegirl_ 1227 but what about humpin Hank. We can't forget about humpin Hank.

Hahaha this is hilarious
Google's algorithm apparently thought Hank's video was more appropriate for him. What do they know that we don't?

"No matter what you do, the tides of time will wash away your sand castle, so there's no sense in reaching for some fool hardy notion of immortality."
-John Green, 2018.
👏
Just like in Don't Hug Me I'm Scared: Eventually everyone runs out of time.
Aereto Yes!
I feel like this is taken out of context without the "...but where was I? No, I don't have a star on the hollywood walk of fame."
I literally just wrote those exact words in my journal. Plus the rest of that sentence, “...when there’s real work to be done with real people right now.” Such a good reminder.
He sounds like an author...or a historian.
Paraphrasing: "My brother comes up with all the good ideas. I just write bestselling novels."
I think that's some pretty effective teamwork.
Except now Hank writes bestselling novels too
@@woodfur00 But he still has much to learn in terms of marketing them.
I watched this video earlier while not logged in, but I've gotta watch it again from my recommended feed to make sure that RUclips knows that I still want to watch vlogbrothers videos and doesn't stop showing them. What a world we live in.
Thank you for your persistence. All hail the algorithm. -John
Why don't you just use your subscription feed to browse through every video posted to all of your subscribed channels in chronological order?

@verdatum Admittedly even videos on there slip by. I swear that video wasn't there before!
"Darling, Fetch the Battle Axe" remains my favorite DFTBA backronym. Also up there are the classic "Dinosaurs Failed to Beat Asteroid" and "Dastardly Farmers Took Bessie Away (but she was Destined for the Burger, Anyway)".

John: "I'm just going to revel in the fact that that's a question people asked Google."

When I started watching this channel I was in the 8th grade, I hated my life and felt awkward and alone. I am 23 now, a lot has changed, but y'all are still here. I'll never forget you signing my copy of Paper Towns and telling me I had a cool name. Thanks for always being here. It means a lot. ❤️

If all of us watch this at least five times, I have hope we can make a dent in this video becoming the top search result over Hank’s. Get to work, everyone! 😂
I've now watched Hank's video at least twice and this one once. I suspect that this video will actually result in "John Green is an Idiot" becoming more firmly entrenched as the top video result on Google for "John Green."
thewinterizzy I checked, and sadly, Hank's video is still the first result. I've already watched it several times, but my homework can wait.

I thought this said: "Whatever happened to those apps that made everybody question their life and choices?". Was going to say, Facebook still exists.
It wouldn't have been a true John Green video without the mention of oblivion in some way - you didn't disappoint, John.
I very much enjoyed the throwbacks to old Nerdfighteria in this video.
Me too!
if you were to swich lives with Hank for 24 hours, what would you do?
grapefruit1992 +
SLEEP and HIDE. Hank has SO MANY professional obligations and works so incredibly hard every single day. He is so relentless and passionate and indefatigable and I couldn't do what he does, so if I were living his life, I would just stay in bed and give Hank a day off. -John
I can't tell if this is wholesome or morally questionable.
I love these two XD
grapefruit1992 lemme just say, the answer to this question sounds like something that would be said on Esther Day
I'm finally in a Vlogbrothers video!!!! There are four humans at 2:00: John, Shailene, the girl playing Sarah (I feel awful for not remembering her name) and my blurry elbow on the left. Honestly one of the coolest days of my life.
You're a good man, John. I appreciate your existence and interaction with the world.
Is John Green still keeping up with his 100 days routine or some version of it?
I am! I am not as fit as I was on Day 100, but I still work out with Laura twice a week and run at least two or three times a week. -John
COME ON, JOHN!
GET IT, JOHN!
That's awesome!
Is John Green f-cking majestic? Yes.
"well except for dave but we don't talk about dave" AAAAAAHHHHH ya gotta love dave
Oh man I needed this video. I have so many questions about John Green! Is he real? Is that a wig? How is even alive??
Your verb tenses are too correct, I don't understand what you're saying
Am I real? Insofar as anyone is, but this is definitely something I worry about a lot. Is that a wig? No. My dad has a thicker head of hair than I do, and he's 67! How is even alive? Via evolutionary pressures that encourage life to become progressively more complex. -John
Is that a wig? No; The Puff™ is the real stuff.
Who is Even, and what happened to her?
“Wow, look at all these things Hank did” is like John’s way of saying “I love you, Hank” without actually saying it.
When John said he's not dead "depending on when you're watching this" I had an image of this comment section whenever he dies and I got real sad
The title of this video is so obviously meant to appear as the first search result, which I feel pretty great about. Also the way "yes, it's happy" was said while looking into the distance, was really funny. As for questions, mine is, "What is John Green's favourite children's book?"
Kaylee Touw +
He's shared a certain love of a phonics reader called Gus (or Gus Is a Bug) that is out of print that nerdfighters recreated for him.
Hard to pick a single favorite, unless Harry Potter is a children's book--in which case, Harry Potter. (All of them, although Half-Blood Prince is my favorite favorite.) -John
i think i might have been turned into a dear h&j fan too much (as opposed to watching the videos regularly), since i saw the title and figured john would talk about other people named john green

Is John Green an existentialist?
I think we all already know that yes is the answer :)
You mean, was John Green an existentialist?
Not really. I find existentialism really interesting and important, but I don't identify with it very deeply. I think I am less individualistic in my own worldview than most existentialists. -John Green
Thank you for answering! ❤️
yes
John you sound so humble at the end. Being there with Hank I'm sure you gave opinions, advice, and perspective along the way for many of the projects. Cofounding can go to all who help shape the heart of the idea.

don't forget that brains attract; darling, fetch the battle axe; decepticons fear this brilliant autobot; do fish take baths a lot? ... thanks hank for that lovely song!
I don't have a question, but I did want to thank you for answering my question during the TATWD tour. I was at the Agnes Scott stop, and I asked you how you became comfortable with crying a lot given our culture's construction of masculinity. I didn't realize it was going to make you cry, and I feel bad, but also thanks for answering!
starpasta what did he say to answer yr question ?
He said he had always been a person who cried a lot, and his parents were always supportive of that and never made him feel bad about it. I thought that was so great, and then he started tearing up, and I was like, "OMG, I just made one of my favorite authors/humans cry, and I didn't realize I had that power". I also felt a little bad because I didn't realize that was gonna happen. But he handled it really well, which I appreciated!
I was also at that stop! DFTBA!
What is John Green’s least favorite video by John Green?
This is a good one...but whats his favorite?

Hey there John! I’m glad John Green isn’t dead, that’s nice to know
If John Green could only save one verb tense which would John Green save?
Firstly, thank you for answering these questions (and for not changing the verb tenses). Also, I'm a Hufflepuff too! Side note: I've now lived in Indianapolis for a year and am disappointed I haven't run into you (it's not like it's a big city or anything). Does John green cry while writing emotional scenes in his books?
+
Oh yeah. I cry while writing every book, even the ones that aren't sad. In some ways I probably write to get to the deep places that I can't reach otherwise, and from which crying springs. -John
+
Oh thank you for asking this! Rosianna recently said she felt egotistical (or similar) for crying at something she wrote and I started to feel like I was weird because I have cried a lot writing my current novel. Like even just reading the same scene through each time and it has taught me some thing about myself.

Ohhh Henry.

2:18 Your prose never fails to floor me, in every single video you make, my word. Or rather, YOUR words.
What is John Green's favourite animal? Does John Green prefer forests or beaches?
My favorite animal is the human. And I prefer beaches to forests, although I choose to live in a forest. -John
I was not aware that you lived in a forest, and now I am adequately jealous.
In The Fault in Our Stars, have you imagined a future for the remaining characters or are you like Peter Van Houten? Also, since you are male, why did you Write it from Hazel's perspective and not Augustus's perspective? Being female, I feel like you pretty much nailed the emotions and thought process on boys, love etc. How? Thanks! PS. Pretty sure your one the great writers of the 21st Century. (And of all time). - with Incredible respect and admiration, Shirley Gray
Thanks for the kind words. 1. I am like Peter van Houten in that I don't think authors are qualified to speak on matters outside the text (except for sequels and the like). I try to leave the characters in my books in places where I am comfortable leaving them, and although I may imagine futures for them, I don't want my imaginings to be privileged over those of any other reader, so I don't share them. 2. I wanted to write from Hazel's perspective because there are a lot of tragic love stories in which a sick girl teaches a boy lessons through her sickness, and I did not want to write that kind of story. 3. I had a lot of women in my life helping me with blind spots--my wife, my publisher, etc.--but ultimately writing is always an act of imagination, and so I was just trying to escape myself and live within Hazel as much as possible. -John
This video is now the 7th result for your name. Soooo close :P
I think John's only tactic now is to flood the search term's video results with videos. I think the best way to go about this is just to start all of his video titles with "John Green Says:"
Now it's the first!
How long did it take for John Green to find an agent to publish his books, and how difficult was that process?
(I'm trying to write books and any direction in this entirely alien part of the process would be not only helpful, but would net you a mention in the acknowledgement section should it be published. DFTBA, I don't expect an answer, but I love to be surprised!)
+
My path to publication was extremely unusual, and I don't think it would be possible in 2018. So you have to remember that this was fifteen years ago and a ton has changed in the publishing business. I was working as an assistant at a magazine called Booklist, and one of the editors there, Ilene Cooper, really mentored me through the whole publishing process. She read early drafts of my book, helped me rewrite it several times, and then after we'd worked on it for a couple years, I sent it out to publishers she knew. So I didn't have an agent. (I do now, and recommend having an agent.)
After about six months, I got a call from one of the publishers (Dutton) saying they wanted to publish my book. It was a very, very modest advance (my roommates often joked that I had a "four figure book deal"), but it allowed me to be with a publisher I liked and an editor, Julie Strauss-Gabel, who was patient and committed. We spent almost three years together rewriting the book that became Looking for Alaska, and Julie is still my editor today. All of this is unusual--most authors move publishers a lot; most have more than one editor in their careers; most start out with agents; etc. So I'm not a model for how to do it. The model that works best, as I understand it, is to reach out to agents whose authors you like with query letters that are specifically targeted to them, and hope from there to move along in the process. But I'm not an expert! Regardless, I wish you luck. -John
I remember your older videos talking about your process in getting started, and it's both helpful and kind of you to respond this way. Thank you much for taking the time, and thank you for the help in building up my luck... as I understand it, luck is being prepared for when the moment is right. I'll keep working, and I wish you and the family the best!
-Kevin

ReYo John Scalzi has a blog where he talks about all kinds of stuff, including the business side of being a writer. Again, though, he has an unusual publishing deal. Worth looking at.
Writing something is not all that hard. Having something to write, that other people may want to read, that's a little harder. But convincing anybody else to part with real actual money for something you've written, that's an entirely different adventure.
3:00 “yes. It’s happy.” Gets me every time
In Paper Towns, in chapter 9 part 2, Q says the phrase 'i say' but in the following chapter he states 'i said' is there something i am missing? Did you do this for dramatic effect or is this simply a large typo? hope you can answer -Sara
+
John tries to let go of his books once they're published, so he does not re-read them. Therefore, he is unlikely to know the answer to this question.
There are a few tense switches in Paper Towns. This happens when an experience feels so raw and real to Quentin that he hasn't processed it as being in the past. You hear this sometimes in real life when people are telling stories; they'll say, for instance, "I was driving down the road and then BAM I run into a deer." I am interested in the way we use verb tense to create distance (or fail to create distance) between ourselves and the things that happen to us. (We also use perspective sometimes to do this, which is why parts of Turtles All the Way Down are written in the second person.) -John
Thank you so much for answering! This helps a lot! -Sara
Maybe John wrote it using Google Search

“No matter what you do the tides of time will wash away your sandcastle” damn that’s deep
This video reminded me of the good old days when the community felt smaller and more personal and less concerned about how the platform was being used. It feels good to be reminded of that time, and have slightly less complicated emotions towards what John and Hank create. (I don't know if anyone else will relate to this, but their videos (and books/movies, in John's case) were such a big part of my young adulthood/coming of age that, recently, I've felt like I've outgrown them, or something, and I've had a lot of complicated feelings related to their content, though I've made it a point to still try to hang on to how much they meant to me and not let them fade away completely.) It feels like I've been a Nerdfighter my whole life, even though I didn't always know it, and I continue to be one even when I don't always feel as connected to the content or the community and my relationship to all of it feels so complicated.
You're all a part of my internet family, I wish everyone the best, and I'm still here to check in every so often.
Best wishes,

Please make a series debunking the numerous conspiracy theories out today! I love the new history of science series!
First up, of course: Why won't John and Hank talk about David? Is it because David is actually both John and Hank--because there is only one Vlogbrother, and he is David Green?
Would you want to live forever?
No. Hard pass on living forever. -John
thank you, appreciate the answer :)
As someone who was forced to read the book Tuck Everlasting, I can also confidently say no to immortality. Immortality is only good when everyone you love is also immortal, when you are still able to take joy from new experiences (but after a while nothing will be new - think Groundhog Day here), and then of course there's that Greek myth about the man who is given immortality but who still ages.
Immortality would really only benefit geniuses, who would be able to see how their research evolves. Imagine what Aristotle would be like if he had continued to live until today. He'd be the ultimate authority on everything, and I imagine he would have liked that.
What if you lived forever but periodically got amnesia?
I would say all yes to immortality. And any problems that arise with immortality, well you have unlimited amount of time to solve of time (except for the heat death of the universe, but that one you at least got a good amount of billions of years to solve that one).
Question for John Green: What do you consider a wasted life? Conversely, what is a not-wasted life?
Also: If you had to choose, would you rather consume pineapple on a pizza or on a burger?
No human life is wasted. Every human life is precious and valuable.
And I hate pineapple in all contexts, but I guess if I were forced to eat it, then I would eat it on a pizza. -John
This reminds me that I really need to get caught up with Dear Hank and John. What a wonderful podcast.
As a recent graduate I am obsessed with "career goals" and meeting expectations that I am not always certain are my own. But I think a reminder that I shouldn't waste my time building a sand castle while others are drowning is exactly what I needed to hear... and that's why John Green is one of the few people I truly admire in life.
John how did you come up with the names for your kids?
Henry I believe gets his name from a grandparent or a great grandparent? The same one that Hank was partially named after. Alice was almost called Eleanor I think? Until President Obama weighed in on the situation.
Both our kids are named after one of their great grandparents, because both Sarah and I feel a deep debt of gratitude to those grandparents. -John
Thank you so much for answering me! That is a very sweet answer.
"All these things Hank did while I was writing books"
So I'm expecting wikipedia to mistakenly list "A truly remarkable thing" on your bibliography section when it comes out.
Opinion on Love Simon and of course the novel it was based on? (Important question, I know)
I like both very much! In fact the screenwriters for Love Simon are writing the Turtles All the Way Down movie! -John
That's amazing news! You'll be doing the casting, correct?
I look forward to your video every Tuesday. It's strangely comforting to know that old friends I don't talk to anymore are also likely still watching your video every Tuesday. Nothing more strangely comforting than John Green's prose, though :)
Aw I’ve been watching y’all for so long like 6 years and I was such a better person back then
Why does John Green not move his face when he's talking?
intense not blinking is a stylistic choice from the old school days of RUclips--started by Ze Frank, I believe. DFTBA!
yeah, but what about the rest of his face???
continuity
maishi hmm

If Hank were to go over his time limit on a video (or commit some other Vlogbrothers crime) in the near future, how would you most like so see him punished?

Not a question for John, just really wondering if there are any darlings out there who will fetch my battleaxe #SingleAndReadyForPringles
Baby, I'll fetch your battle axe any day of the week.
Do you have your own battle axe to be fetched? Because i wont share
Well in the context here the battleaxe could be something naughty but i say it's always good to have two in hand m'lads
A battleaxe in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Dandelions Fly Through Blue Air
I think we should all take a moment to remember John Green, and all of his many achievements .. and partial contributions to our lives.
We weren’t exactly close, John and I. Mostly, because we never actually met. Or corresponded. Or, even shared a phone call. Something I always considered a staggering oversight by John, given his general penchant for fastidiousness. I would always tell him, “Giving up is not always giving in, John. Especially when holding on is holding you back.”
But, of course, he wasn’t in the room, so he never came back with that clever rejoinder I was always hoping for.
Again, a rather glaring lapse on his part.
But, we’re here to remember the good things about John, and not to dwell on his deficiencies. Because if we were - boy, could
I tell you some real whoppers. But, as I said before, this is not the time nor the place for that. That will all come later.
So, for now, I will turn things over to Dave …
.. umm … Dave?
lol I AM ALIVE. -John
Your cameo in the Paper Towns movie was so great though!!!
I think you're more of a Ravenclaw and your brother is more of a Hufflepuff.
Also, Canadians can be on that extra screening list. They can't ultimately deny a Canadian entry, but there's no law that they have to let your stuff through, and they are allowed a certain amount of time to make sure you're not snuggling in anything.
Joshua Hillerup John is a Hufflepuff and I believe Hank is a Slytherin. The hat takes your choice into account!
Joshua Hillerup Illegal snuggling is a profitable venture.
Snuggling.....too perfect. 😆
Omg snuggling is the greatest
Does the puff live on even though it no longer resides on top of John's head?
Jacob Austin I like to think that the puff, while adorable, was a representation of the stress and disordered thinking plaguing John. While I miss the look, I’m glad it’s gone.
The puff exists within us all, so long as we believe
I miss that puff every tuesday. While it may have been from stress, it helped bring us all together

John, didn't you live in New York before Indianapolis??
Yes, but I never wrote about New York. Weirdly, *Hank* writes about New York in his novel, so between the two of us, we have now covered all the major places I lived in my life. -John
Yeah, I misunderstood what you were saying and I thought you were just listing the places you had lived.
What does John Green think constitutes a "good/meaningful life"? Also: What advice would John Green give to aspiring writers? (For instance: how to cultivate a unique and engaging authorial voice, how to design relatable characters, and how to decide if a story is worth telling.)

Hi, I am on my Mothers account. I am 12 and my best friend is 11 (turning 12 on the first and is probably your biggest fan) My best friend has so many questions and has tried to get in touch with you and has dared me to post this in your comments. She is most likely your biggest fan, and I myself adore the fault in our stars. She is not very emotional but she has cried in the upsetting parts of both Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars. She highly recommends as I was previously on the phone and listening to her scratchy voice (as a result of crying) making Looking for Alaska into a movie. You have helped her love reading as do I and look forward to many more of your books.
I'd say you accomplished your goal! This video currently sits 2nd place on my Google Search results, behind "Dear Class of 2020" (which isn't even on your own channel, but that's beside the point).
