I also live in AZ and moths are a big problem as soon as it warms up. They got some of my souvenir tee shirts from baseball games. Lucky I had all my dress cloths in bags zipped up.
Excellent advice. Wish I'd watched this before I first got a moth problem. Once you have them, I find you have to be using these techniques a couple of times every year
Hey there I love your video! Just a point though - the moths don’t do any eating (it’s the larvae that do that) so yes killing the moths is important- and catching them before they mate and the female lays her eggs is really important. But I think perhaps you should say in your video that killing the moths doesn’t solve the problem on its own - if eggs were laid then you still need to deal with them. I love the heat treatment plan which will deal with the issue. Doug
How do I get rid of moths in my carpet? I have 2 beautiful carpets about 5x7 & 8x9. I noticed a couple of areas where there are holes. With further inspection it appears the fibers will just peel away. Help, they are from the Indich collection. Also I live in Honolulu.
Fingers crossed it'll work, i have wholes on my coton t-shirts (only t-shirt even if it's on the same shelf). Even if i wear them a lot, sometimes it even happens after i washed them, new holes.. the washing machine is brand new and doesn't have anything sharp, though i dry my clothes outside sometimes at night so that can explain.. 200€ of shirts dead in 1 year xD
@@Lily235probably just a stock photo. The box should work, but steaming or freezing for 72+ hours will work just as well & be cheaper. If you’re brave enough, an oven could probably do the job of his heat box lol. Not the most practical for home use-I think he assumes everyone has as large a closet as him. Cedar essential oils, especially eastern red cedar (which is ironically juniper), are probably a better long term preventative solution than the moth trap, as they repel rather than attract moths.
@@KumofanOther solutions that have worked for me. Put all your clothes and shoes in black garbage bags in a hot car or direct sunlight for 12 hours. Use a hot dryer for clothes that can handle it. Dry cleaning. Vacuuming and steam cleaning all crevices of your closet. I also found these low odor moth balls available in the UK.
Will say again in case one watches this and not the other presentation. I used the pheromone traps and it only attracted a massive amount of outside moths to the windows. It was like the movie "The Birds" only these were creepy moths. It was quite terrifying. Never any moths in the traps though. I won't try that again. My moth problem is in two large wool area rugs. Currently using food grade diatomaceous earth and it's working. (You have to sprinkle it on and rub it into the rug) Leaving it on the rugs for 3-4 days. Vacuuming and reapplying Hopefully then take one to the cleaner. The other rug is destroyed but no big deal, it's just a thing. But the space heater idea is a great one. Thank you!
Agree on pheromone traps....I bought a load from ebay..and never seen so many! I don't use them now. They were literally coming in under window sashes. I did have them stuck to the traps however, bronze coloured things, maybe 7mm long.
@@Oakleaf700 oh ugh! Sorry to hear of that. These are worse than fleas to get rid of. I read you can't ever get rid of them. Only try continuously to keep their numbers down. I've come to the conclusion that either: A. we aren't being told the whole truth about these moths. Species, life cycle, size of larvae, how and when the eggs are laid, etc. (I have discovered untruths and outright lies in this search. They can be found in the clothes you are wearing. Cedar chips, lavender, hot water washing does no good. In my situation they are in EVERYTHING. The larvae need vitamin B6 to survive longer than two weeks apparently. That is why they can survive on lint and dust as it has shed skin cells and hair. The storage bins won't protect your things. The larvae can chew through anything. They travel in search of food but i never saw that mentioned. I learned it by contacting a pest control company and had to nudge the answer out of them. The available info states the adult moth has no working mouth parts. I want to know then how are they getting out of some of these cocoons i am finding that i can't break with my fingers? Plastic, Wood, Metals. Kicking their way out? LOL) Or B. I have an additional infestation of a different, unknown similarly destructive insect. Very similar. I have a Carson Microbrite 60 - 120x magnifier. Unreal what I am finding. Hey Kirby I just shared a link I found interesting about how it is only the moth larvae that eat our clothes since the moths themselves don't even have a mouth - they are still the source of the problem however, great video - thank you
Have you ever heard of or encountered carpet beetle larvae? I mean this generally speaking of course. Just as these methods are effective for bed bug control, I’m assuming they would also be effective on other household pests. However, what if the infestation is widespread or in a vehicle? I’m glad that you were able to handle your matter so effectively. My best to you and yours!
Thank you for the informative video. Quick question: I noticed that you removed your shoes while “heat treating” your closet, does that mean leather items (garments, bags, etc.) will be damaged in high heat?
Anyone who has detected or discovered a moth problem in their valuables is quickly taken aback. That is exactly what happened to me. I travel *_a lot_* and I leave most of my belongings in an off-site storage facility which I rent. Now I am facing a hefty repair bill (dry cleaning and invisible mending) on a whole heap of garments such as wool sweaters, wool scarves, wool trousers and wool suit jackets. *Can someone please give a thorough list of the types of fabrics that moths are attracted to - rayon - yes/no, polyester - yes/no, cotton - yes/no, etc...*
Natural fibers, But they have no problem eating on my polyester either… Replaced a cotton shower curtain with a crappy polyester one and lo and behold there’s a moth on it…
They eat anything they got my souvenir tee-shirts I got from a baseball game tour I went on with a friend around the country. Some of those shirts were not even natural fibers. Best to just bag everything that cost more then $10. That's what I do now I keep closet door closed even installed a rubber seal on the bottom of the door and put in a motion light under the bulb so it goes out when not in there. I didn't think much of moths before this happened to me.
Wool-yes, silk-yes, fur-yes, hair(like natural paint brushes)-yes, shearling-yes, cashmere-yes, mohair-yes, camel-yes, lambswool-yes, merino-yes. Wool blends- yes. If they are in your home and these items are not present, they might eat leather or suede or linen but rarely. They will survive on any dust that came from the above clothing items. They may also eat through sweaty or dirty spots on your clothes because they are attracted to that. Polyester-no, rayon-no, acrylic-no, spandex-no, Lycra-no, modal-no, cotton-no, any man-made fabric-no. For crafters all yarn made of the yesses - they will eat! They will eat wool roving and felted wool items.
I have had a moth problem in various rooms and now they are concentrated in the wool carpet under my bed which is skirted and in my closet which also has wool carpet and my clothes. I see worms, crawling up the wall behind my bed and elsewhere, and they hang down from the ceiling. We are about to move and we will not be taking the carpet, but we will be taking our clothes and our curtains And I don't want to take them off with us also. How do I attack the moths under the bed besides vacuuming, which I've done and is there a product I can sprinkle on under the bed after I vacuum? This has been an ongoing problem, and it originally started upstairs when I was out of town and someone was watching my house, but never noticed that the rug upstairs was being eaten. I would appreciate any help. Nora in Houston
Hi, great video! Can you please confirm it’s ok to use this method on delicate materials such as cashmere and silk? Will it cause any damage to the fabric? Thanks, Hannah
Thank you for your informative video. I did not previously know that you had such a website. I recently discovered a few holes in a garment and it appears to be an early detection so I am encouraged. If you could let me know if you have closet heaters for rent of if I can rent the ovens and how to do that I would appreciate it. I did not readily see these on your site. Thank you, Michael in Prescott
Quick question from a place in the world where using the "moths baker" would not be practical for multiple reasons: what is the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, is 140° correct? Also, what is the required exposure time at that temperature? Thank you indeed for the enlightening video.
Hi Kirby, thanks for your video. I certainly have a webbing clothes moth problem, but the conditions in my apartment are dissimilar enough that I could use some guidance (many closets, several chests, entirely hardwood, and cats, for a start). Can I contact you (or you me) directly for your opinion? I would greatly appreciate your guidance.
What space heaters do you use to treat your closet? I did not find them on your website. Can the zapp bug bag be plugged in to each its own outlet but just ordinary 110v outlets? What does it mean that these outlets need to be on different circuits?
I own an Ozone machine. Im curious if I sealed off my heating and cooling ducts in my bedroom, and seal the door, if the lack of oxygen in the bedroom…wool rugs, quilts, would be effective. My bug guy is no help, and my bed and mattress are an issue.
MrJamescord We sell these on the website. Quite inexpensive. Less than $400. You can rent larger ones, but because they’re designed for entire rooms, they’re the same cost to rent, if not more.
Early in the video (or maybe another vid on this topic with the same guy) it says their life cycle is 45 days but it later says in 30 days you'll know if you're in the clear. Do they go thru bug puberty faster when it's warmer?
I have a question. Do moths lay eggs in carpet or cheap ikea-type wood? If I wanted to do this, i would think I would need to treat my bedroom as well because I have dressers, not just a closet and there is a carpeted floor. I use traps, clean and vacuum, etc. i actually bought a deep freezer, put my favorite clothes in it, kept them in there for 96 hours and then put them in airtight containers. Today when I went to get a shirt from one of these bins (which are just terrible in themselves as a way to store clothes re: finding what to wear) and a moth flies right out. Any suggestions on how to treat a larger area, like a whole top floor at this point (if they are in the carpet). I have 0 problems throwing out the wood dressers if need be.
My Question is I no now it definitely a moth problem in my entire apartment 2 year I nave hole in my clothes n I feel like even on my body I feel itchy n uncomfortable my hair which is long n curly feel like o have these lil hard pieces when washing my hair can this really happen because I think I’m going crazy?
Will they come on the clothes your wearing ? Your skin and hair ? Your bedding ? I believe we have a huge problem . My in laws we moved with as both are elderly and they were flying and everywhere. I thought it was Termites, but it wasn't. A months back I saw on the wall of our home a huge freaky bug . Had no idea I put it in a jar . It had red eyes and shooting black stuff we thought was Venom Jedrastic park creature . As big as my wifes hand . My next question is . Can they cause illness ? My wife has become very sick always having allergic reactions and anaphylaxis. She always sick puking . She lost 130 for no reason . Her hair fallen out . I did not realize the holes were from this . We need our whole house treated any advice would be great
Beware, the blighters can still get in.... Wool needs to be dry cleansed and aired out before storing it away.. A camphor wood chest I bought once, but it makes your clothes smell of camphor....
Great video with awesome products and advice! Can you recommend treatments or advice for dealing with variegated carpet beetles? Are there any carpet beetle lures that work? And they are tiny, how to keep them out of woolens? Many advise “ breathable boxes and bags” but don’t say WHICH boxes ( other than cotton) are breathable and therefor more cost effective. And, what to do with oversize items like quilts etc, the cotton bags available are too small for these kingsize items Thanks so much!
I threw away the old clothes where the larvae (single one that's it) was as they were 15 years old. And the new clothes I put in awash with bleach and hot water. Is that gonna be enough?
Dr. Killigan's pheromone moth traps work well, but hey only attract the male moths. Make sure you get the ones for clothing moths and not pantry moths.
Maybe try different locations to see if you can locate the source. Our trap that caught the most was in the hallway above the stairs in the middle of the house. Check up inside your couches. We are still trying to get rid of them... still haven't found the source of the last outbreak. Now have carpet beetles too, which are just like moths. Good luck
*Question:* moths like darkness, or so I hear, which is how they can work in secrecy and privacy. But Kirby recommends turning *_off_* the lights. Why?
I don't know about what Kirby's recommending what I can tell you that Is that web moth a.k.a. Cloths or carpet moths Seem to go where it is dark and undisturbed. And no, they obviously do not like the light. They also do not fly very well so if you see like a sporadic flying thing, that's probably one of them. They mainly will run and try it maybe like hop and jump if you do come across them and shine the light.. Vinegar I hear is a good killer for all phases of them.
I understand the oven is not returnable lie, can you provide more ‘proof’ of effectiveness as this is a large investment. AlSO… will a standard US outlet handle the wattage of the ovens?
Unfortunately this does not address how the moths got there in the first place or if they will come back any time soon. In my case I think they are in the attic as I have actually seen they through out the house.
@Mynawallin574 heck of a point there.. Like I get his design Of what he hopefully had in mind and props. On the creativity of making a product but this ain't the one. I could do this with a tent and 2 space heaters, but it's only gonna really fix a small Concentrated area× if that. anything small amount of❤ items, what are you gonna slowz#ly but surely put Your whole house in there -.I don't think so. 8:59

Nothing is sacred with what I believe to be carpet beetles ... After catching one ( the size of a pea ) and in my eye's that's pretty large ... When I first found one of these insects I thought it was a Lady Bug but after closer examination was grossed out ... I live on the East Coast and this past summer never had such an issue ... Last ThanksGiving my landlord installed ( what I believe to be ) Berber carpeting ... The carpet itself is thin resembling " office type carpeting " so I'm not sure if the carpet was made to look like Berber ... I was so aggravated by these insects I was forced to have an exterminator for an estimate ... The beetle I caught I saved for the exterminator and he did identify it as such ... He told me I have to vacuum almost everything day as they breed quickly, he also told me these insects are coming from outside ( he was right on that ) as I can see them sometimes fly on the opposite side of my window, some times I'll see them on the inside of my window pane ... I don't have " moths " never ever saw one in all the yrs I'm living here but have to safely assume these so-called carpet beetles do the same damage ... Most of my tops I had to throw away and the one's that have not been damaged yet must be placed in huge blanket size Ziplock Storage bags ... I no longer have the luxury to hang my tops and have to break my back every time I need to find a top ... I have even went as far as to keep all my freshly laundered sheets in the storage size Ziplock bags and it's a hassle ... Breathing in the Raid I spray from time to time is making me ill, I can tell as feel my lymph nodes swell and hurt ( I live in a small space ) I fell defeated at this point ... It's November 2019, last night I had quickly pulled something out from my closets floor and found another carpet beetle I'M SO AGGRAVATED >:/
moth traps are expensive here, however they would be good to identify whats in the wardrobe, would it work on silverfish too? I know I got the bastards in the wardrobe
The only was never to have the clothes or carpet moth in your home is to never have Natural fibres in your place......no feathers, no silk, no wool, no cotton, no linen, no cashmere, no horsehair .. Just have nylon....... yuck.
what you are describing as 'moth eggs' next to the holes in clothing sounds more like 'frass' - the excrement from the larvae! Nasty all the same. You might see frass in the bottom of a drawer where clothes moths have been active. I have had a problem with case bearing moths in some woollen rugs, and I have just put them outside in strong sunshine, which will kill any larvae. I'm in the UK and have a constant battle against these wretched moths. They seem to be becoming more widespread here, and are also a real problem in museums and historic houses.
Okay…I can’t believe you asked that question! I would never have suspected that my recent super itchy scalp could be twisted to my very recent clothes moth problem. I’d love to know if that v could be because I’ve never had either problem before. Started seeing moths flying in my smaller apartment two months ago. Big problem now. Scalp started itching badly one month ago. I’m using clothes moth traps and catching a lot.
Yes yes and yes . Not very many insects out there that can digest the carotene. That is in our hair and nails carpet.Beatles can also digest in the litter.Ally crawl up your body to your hair as well.As these moths that are literally just Ethan me up right now and I'll sticky. And peeling things off my face , it's disgusting.
And the rash looking thing, maybe even carpet Beatles. I know that the hairs of The Beatles that are microscopic in the first place caused by looking marks, but it's just a rash from it. However, I'm going through it right now and I believe it's due to the months don't know if they can. Cause rash too probably because the my neck and shoulders in under my back of head rashi bumpy and I can feel them moving in my hair its terrible. Vinegar will help quite a bit. There's a good video on fact VS Smith on months.About thirty five minutes from a ladyside collegeist , I would take a look at that.

Depends on the starting temperature and how large the room is. For my 100 sq foot closet, I used two to accelerate the process. You might need two or three of the heaters in order to get it where the temperature needs to be.
Did you leave the thermometer mid closet? And take any fire hazard precautions in using the space heaters? (Are they zappbug/exterminator tool specific or did you already have space heaters?)
Vacuuming is the best solution - you just have to keep doing it religiously for a while. My main moth issue has been carpet rather than clothes. Thoroughly Vacuuming will radically decrease the egg numbers as well as larvae. It’s a long game rather than an instant solution but over some months you will fix the issue if you keep it up.

Pheromone traps are a big help. Change them every few months. Keep them in your home all the time. And dry cleaning your whole wardrobe? Not hundreds of dollars, easily thousands. Dry cleaning costs more than your clothes did! Well, maybe not yours...
So for the home design Of the home I will never have I would love to have in addition to the Japanese style bathroom that has an isolated portion for bathing that heats separately from the rest of the house I would like a little steam/sauna room somehow in there that can be used not only for me but also as a little steam sanitize bath for new clothes from vintage places so that I can heat them up to a temperature that will kill moths and any potential bugs.
Great idea! Infrared sauna is health enhancing - am investigating for cardiovascular. Not sure it attains 130 ? But certainly one could add a supplemental space heater. However - you have put in my mind making my small bathroom the moth killing machine!

Perhaps you have a carpet beetle infestation. We had one that destroyed some socks and sweaters. My wife went about hand inspecting wool items (found several carpet beetles among our clothing) and either tossing them or putting them in the in the freezer for a couple of days. We also set off a fogger. Have not had an issue since.
Mark Shimazu Thanks very much for your response. But there is no evidence of any insect activity in my flat ever. Except my woollen clothes are being eaten. Careful examination reveals no eggs, nothing ! I'm losing irreplaceable stuff. ?????
Gordon Bradley Is buy a moth trap to see if that is the issue. They can go completely undetected. The buggers are impossible to see. There are also some other possibilities that I’ll look into for you. At a minimum, I’d heat treat everything. Heat kills all insects, which is what is so great about it. If your closet is large, you can call a professional to being larger heaters that are normally used to treat hotel rooms. But the heat would kill any insects, not just moths. I’d then set traps to monitor. Install an air filter maybe. And make sure I’m keeping my closet door closed and the environment as clean as possible.

But that is near impossible when you can't find comprehensive information anywhere.
My problem hasn't gone away. It's beyond severe. I've come to the conclusion that either:
A. we aren't being told the whole truth about these moths.
LOL)
Or
B. I have an additional infestation of a different, unknown similarly destructive insect. Very similar.
I have a Carson Microbrite 60 - 120x magnifier. Unreal what I am finding. I've so far tried 3 magnifiers with the ability to record photos and videos but none can work with with my phone or my Chromebook. I've ordered another in the hopes of documenting to get answers.

You sell a pheromone-based moth catcher. Wouldn't it be better to *_repel_* rather than attract moths, even if they're going into a trap?
Yeah when you repel an insect in your home where do you think it’s going to go? On vacation? Smh

Most of those granules are listed in peer reviewed research as frass (poop) and not eggs. Just fyi. I’m sure there’s eggs in there, though.
Turning off the lights, you say? Well from my own experience, the moths absolutely love the darkness.

Nope.

Follow up and tell us if it worked please.

Hi, great video! Can you please confirm it’s ok to use this method on delicate materials such as cashmere and silk? Will it cause any damage to the fabric?
Thanks, Hannah
Yes, absolutely. All of these materials are stable under the heat we suggest in the video.
Thank you, Michael in Prescott
would baking wool coats in the oven also work?
Quick question from a place in the world where using the "moths baker" would not be practical for multiple reasons: what is the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, is 140° correct? Also, what is the required exposure time at that temperature?
Thank you indeed for the enlightening video.
Where do I buy these heaters?
It’s not the moths that make the holes, it’s the larvae.

What does it mean that these outlets need to be on different circuits?
quick question when using the heat treatment device, doesn't this run the risk of shrinking your clothes?
I own an Ozone machine. Im curious if I sealed off my heating and cooling ducts in my bedroom, and seal the door, if the lack

Great article, can you tell me if you purchased these heaters or rented them? What are we looking at cost wise? I will start being proactive!

Where can I get the heater box for putting clothes in and getting rid of clothing moths, larva and eggs
How about using a space heater in the closet, or is that too dangerous?
Are moths attracted to *_suede_* shoes? And why do leather shoes and belts attract mould? What's a preventative?

Dr. Killigan's pheromone moth traps work well, but hey only attract the male moths. Make sure you get the ones for clothing moths and not pantry moths.
I have a set of these. ZERO catches! I've caught several with my bare hands. Zero with the damn traps.
Maybe try different locations to see if you can locate the source. Our trap that caught the most was in the hallway above the stairs in the middle of the house. Check up inside your couches. you will notice they are attracted to light and lamps
It's November 2019, last night I had quickly pulled something out from my closets floor and found another carpet beetle I'M SO AGGRAVATED >:/

what you are describing as 'moth eggs' next to the holes in clothing sounds more like 'frass' - the excrement from the larvae!

Hi Kirby,
How long did it take for your ZappBug to reach the required temperature? Thank you
Depends on the starting temperature and how large the room is.
Definitely in the closet
How would you get rid of moths in a large couch? It seems my moth issue is all over my house not just clothing
