Hi! I am a licenced Pest Control Technician and, I wanted to give kudos to you for this video. It's pretty on point - much more so than most I see on RUclips. A few points to accompany yours - 1. Sanitation is paramount. Vaccuum and, vaccuum more. Get into cracks/crevices where sneaky invaders will lay eggs. 2. Sanitize. 3. Pheromone lures - do NOT handle the pheromone with your bare hands or, if emitting excessive human pheromones. You want the female moth pheromone to do it's job 4. Don't obsessively check the lure. Don't lose it if 1) you don't immediately see moths captured (they are social and, will follow once others are captured 2) freak out if you look and see 10+ inside. Leave it. It's working. Cheers
i dont see how a moth would get in my room as i never open windows and my door is always close, closet is always closed, how could they get in, no moths at all
NEVER had moths until after my husband was killed (at only 38).💔 Between this vid & your reply, it makes sense now why clothes moths have taken over. 😞 At first I didn’t want to _wash_ his clothes. The thought of washing away his scent was just too much.💔 I finally did end up washing most of his clothes (that seemed to help for a while), but it’s been over 4 years now and I still just can’t bring myself to pack up his clothes (plus I still wear some of his millions of T-shirts). I’ve used those sticky moth traps from Amazon (some seem to work better than others), but I guess I just need to get off my still/forever grieving ass and deep clean the entire closet at this point. 🤦♀️ Here goes! Wish me luck! 🙏
@@WonderWoman0313 Sorry for your loss. There is an efficient grieving course , sometimes even offered in churches. I thought it was impossible to get done with grief, but it does work. One doesn't forget the deceased one , but the handicapping crisis-pain-sorrow etc feelings pass.
I like this Kirby Alison guy, and thanks Doug Smith for the tips. I bought his traps yesterday and really want to see them work. Thanks Kirby Allison for the many videos on gentleman's grooming, I know some but have learned more from you.
I'm from Australia, where the weather is warm all year round. Most of my clothes are light-weight cotton. That means my garments will generally not get targeted by moths or their eggs and larvae. However, even in Australia we have a couple of weeks of cold weather each year. My wool clothes (like scarves, jackets and winter-weight trousers) are generally locked away in storage for ten months (or more) every year. Now, much too late, I have discovered the damage that can be done when moths are allowed to feed on wool items for months. I am paying the price by way of dry cleaning, mending, invisible mending and repair bills. Some of my items are already classed as a write-off. This shouldn't have happened - if you live in a hot climate, you only need to wear winter clothes rarely. As such, those winter garments should have a *_long life_* due to them not being worn-out by frequent/daily use. Only now, too late, have I discovered the risks and dangers posed by clothing moths. It has stressed me out and caused the end of some very beautiful pieces of designer wool clothing. Please learn from my experience, regardless of where you live. I have just gone through a very expensive mistake that I will not forget anytime soon. It has been a tragedy for me.
I freeze everything new to my system for a week. In a plastic bag. Then a good shake and hand wash. Does the trick. Great info, as always, Kirby. You're the KING of CLOTHES!
Excellent series every gentleman should follow. I know I lose about one wool garment a year to these ghosts in my closets. I always sleep with a nightlight on and keep the closet doors shut so they won't eat me at night too. Why is it that they go for one or two items and not the stack of sweaters or wool sweatpants? I would think an infestation might take many seasons wardrobe crop quick.
Thanks Kirby. I lost a nice pair of suit trousers to the little boogers, but luckily have not lost anything else. This video was very informative. Thanks again!
If you are shaking and brushing your garment’s in the closet space, aren’t you flicking and flinging the eggs onto other cloths escentially keeping them there ?
Moths seem to love merino best i have lost 5 favorite garments this year! I have a new merino poncho, which is in a plastic bag, closed tightly! I am hoping!!!
Hey Kirby, I recently discovered moth holes on a suit that I've not worn in some time. Is there any way I can repair the damage done? How much is it gonna cost? There's about 6-7 small holes and 1 bigger hole.
seems a bit counterintuitive to place a trap that will attract moths, in a space where you are trying to avoid moths. Maybe it would be better to place the trap in the closet only for a day or two and then remove it and see if anything was caught?
Hello Kirby, I know that your video regarding Moths is quite a few years old but I live in hope that you will be able to answer my questions. I have a room which is fitted out with wardrobes down each side. I took a garment out recently and came across holes in it. I know why that has happened of course it’s moths. What I have done is leave all the doors to my wardrobes open. Am I doing the right thing or is it an invite for the darn things? Also I never see moth’s or any other insects for matter. How do they get into closed cupboards and drawers? I’m in the UK and have subscribed. Thank you.
We had a problem with these last summer. Put out traps and it caught several of them. It was in our garage though. Only clothes out there are my husbands work clothes that he washes every Sunday. He is in construction so they get dirty and he doesn’t want to bring that into the house. Just saw a moth in our bedroom. Do they tend to come back?
Hi my wool jumper was eaten by larva’s but it happened in the hotel not our house. Since then I keep wearing my jumper still and I even put a cashmere jumper on top. I didn’t know I could have contaminated the larva. What can I do know? Thanks
I purchased the recommended moth traps from your site about a year ago. Seem to work well. But my bug guy (who treats my home every 90 days for bugs and critters) frowned when he saw them. He contends that since the recommended moth traps contain a pheromone, they may actually encourage moths to enter the closet. He prefers using a repellent (like moth balls) rather than an attractant (like pheromones). What say you? Can you recommend a repellant-based prophylactic that won't stick up my wardrobe? Thx.
Very helpful information. Not pertaining to moths, but would it be possible to find out where to get the blue casual jacket Kirby is wearing at 5:17 (fits a niche in my wardrobe I've been trying to fill....)
From personal experience Inhibit them getting in: Fit insect screen mesh over air intake bricks Check door and window seals as moths are waxy and can slide through tiny gaps Check in floor crawlspace for discarded plumber's rags, dead mice. Don't open windows in evening, certainly not with lights on. Seal building element interfaces with intumescent mastic e.g. skirting board to wall and floor, facings and architraves around doors and windows, they will enter a room via brick wall cavities. Hi Kirby. Thank you for the very informative video. I have recently invested a substantial sum of money into my wardrobe and would be devastated/angry if I was to loose even one garment to moths.
Wow what a timely video, I literally pulled out one of my favourite Ozwald Boateng suits only to see a moth eaten hole. I am so upset anyway I have found an invisible mender here in London and they can repair it for £100 pounds
They can help... but the effect is very marginal. And the most important thing to understand is that cedar anything loses it's aromatic benefits over time. They either need to be frequently replaced or renewed with cedar oil, which we sell on our website.
Thanks for the video. Been meaning to research this topic, so this was my introduction. Was surprised there was no discussion of odorous moth deterrents, such as cedar or moth balls. Are these effective? Would you suggest their use in conjunction with the physical barriers and closet hygiene you discuss?
Looking forward to the new video! I remember my grandparents had trunks of clothes stored with mothballs. I thought this was a preventative measure as opposed to eradication after an infestation.
A sealed trunk will protect against moths entering, for sure, and moth balls help repel. But the problem with moth balls for finer clothing is that they have a very strong residual odor.
he sells them on his website, they seem pricey but if you have some costly clothes they will be worth it. The cost of 10 traps is probably much much less than losing a nice sport coat to the moths.
I have webbing clothes moths infestation for over 5 years that must have come in with my wool area rugs. The moths are even in my basement and garage. I will find evidence of the moths dead everywhere. I do have the traps you show in the video with hundreds of moths attached to the sticky areas. If I heated the cloths in one closet as you suggest, all it would take is a moth to fly up from the basement to start the problem all over again. I have packed my linens in plastic storage bags. I discarded the rugs...still have moths. Any thoughts?
Hello Kirby, would you please do a video on what to do to my dress shoe if I get caught in a storm and the whole leather shoe is soaked? I know the outside can be taken care of easily with the Saphir saddle soap, but what about the inside? Is it ok to rinse with some clean water because the shoe was soaked by the dirty street rain water? And when can put the shoe tree back in? Thank you so much
Hi there! The best thing to do is to soak the entire shoe in water. You can shampoo with the Leather Cleaning Soap. Then stuff with newspaper and lay them down on their sides to dry. You want to wet the entire shoe (which is okay) to ensure that the shoe dries evenly.
I own a pair of Alden tassel shoes and was wondering how I should polish the actual tassel. I polish the rest of the shoe just like you do but the tassel has not been polished, so they have gotten somewhat dull. What do you recommend I do?
I had an infestation of clothes moths. I've had my house professionally sprayed twice & I did more than wash my clothes..I BOILED them for over 30 minutes and more than one time....some I'd notice seemed to still have something on thw m so I BOILED them 2 or 3 times then washed AND after that, I'd steam iron them and a still they'd have little white things pop up out of fabric. And cotton items were eaten !( a lot of what I hear is that clothes moths do not like cotton.) And now , a couple of moths later...I think I'm seeing something in clothes again. What is It? Is it motha? I've never seen one anywhere in my house but seem to have holes, thinning of fabric to almost see-through and I pick out little fabric fuzz balls from a lot of stiff .
sounds miserable! I've never heard of boiling your clothes. Seems extreme. Heat Treatment is the most effective way to eradicate moths. Search "bed bug heat treatment" and you can find professional local companies that can come do this for you. But you have to treat the environment. If all you do is treat your clothes, but not the environment, then the moths will always reappear. This is another reason trapping is so important - it helps you identify the problem quickly. It would also help you positively identify the culprit.
Kirby, another prevention is when bringing in groceries, any grains brought in, for example flour, are frozen immediately or put into solid plastic containers with airtight lids. Often grains already contain the eggs just waiting to hatch. How I ended up with an infestation in the kitchen and already was vigilant from finding my Opa's clothes eaten before my custodianship (someday find a reweaver to mend the overcoat). Now I understand why were not eaten until after over ten years in storage before Oma let them go, as movement helps. But, I am still paranoid and use full garment bags and cedar hangers, better to be safe than sorry. Is there anything to look for when considering a HEPA filter?

I have a possible irrational fear that my closet is fine, but if I put a moth trap in it, it'll possibly bring moths in and they'll wreck havoc. Is this fear founded? :p
If you already have moths in your house, then there is nothing to stop them from coming in anyway. Your closet is full of temptation for them, anyway. The moth trap will just alert you sooner than later that there is a problem.
Did a panty raid on a 76 year old woman and found that most of the underwear in the drawer were soiled and filled with “discharge” (who know when’s the last time they washed that underwear and how often they have reworn it…) I was immediately disgusted by the streaks of discharge… (I know discharge is normal but … wearing the same pair of underwear multiple times over and stuffing them back in the drawer irregardless or unaware of the discharge…. Unsanitary and GROSS) Anyways I took out my phone to record the streaks and was zooming into the crusty gunk on every pair of soiled underwear… when unexpectedly I see something MOVING on the camera and upon close inspection found a worm like creature …. I yelped and was grossed out but continued to record …. Just today I’m finally researching and I’m almost 100% sure it was a cloth mod . Although that makes it a LITTLE less gross … it just added to the mountain of evidence of uncleanliness. (Dirty disgusting fridge filled with cat hair , dust, food, etc)(floor filled with cat litter, dust, crumbs, and not being cleaned for years….) (a toothbrush FILLED with yellow GUNK…. With the user completely unaware or uncaring of any of this…. The worm/clothing moth larvae on the discharge filled multiples times worn underwear was the icing on the cake…..) Beware of what someone looks like on the outside, or house much the try to LOOK good… they may be ignoring things that ACTUALLY matter… like cleanliness, disease, health, (physical and mental) …. All this to say…. ALWAYS LOOK DEEPER !

Thanks Kirby for sharing this information with us .
Do your garment bags also protect against infestation with carpet beetles. Thanks.
From personal experience
Inhibit them getting in:
Fit insect screen mesh over air intake bricks
Check door and window seals as moths are waxy and can slide through tiny gaps
Check in floor crawlspace for discarded plumber's rags, dead mice.
Don't open windows in evening, certainly not with lights on.
Seal building element interfaces with intumescent mastic e.g. skirting board to wall and floor, facings and architraves around doors and windows, they will enter a room via brick wall cavities.
Don't provide environments for them:
Air rooms during day to dissipate damp and dry surfaces after cleaning Tineidae are colloquially known as the fungus moth family
Keep grass trimmed near home.
Vacuum thoroughly those places that are rarely done e.g. behind kitchen appliances under kitchen units, under edges of carpets.

Hey Kirby, what is your opinion on putting cedar blocks in your closet to prevent moths?
They can help... but the effect is very marginal. And the most important thing to understand is that cedar anything loses it's aromatic benefits over time. They either need to be frequently replaced or renewed with cedar oil, which we sell on our website.
Great information, I had a camel hair jacket eaten by clothes moths...

Michael Kraus The information out there is just terrible. We have a video releasing next week on how to kill moths should you have a problem.

I think they help a little as preventative, but not once they are there...

Just accrued to to me to use normal oven at 140 F for 30 min
Anthony Clarke If you figure out how to fit your closet in your oven, let me know. Moth problems are never isolated to one garment.
I have a walk in closet and is very organized and clean I was very surprised to find moth worms or maggots whatever you call them but they were crawling on the ceiling extremely disgusted myself I just went crazy honestly and empty the whole closet to get a good cleaning because I have never experienced something like this I immediately went to Home Depot when crazy purchasing Mothballs to put all over the closet and in the floor as well I went one by one in every clothing in hangers and I was so disgusted because I did found two of them in a dress obviously I was screaming I was just so disgusting organize everything and put back but I haven't seen anything that was eating through any of the clothing 2 days have been since I placed all the Mothballs and I haven't seen not even one but unfortunately under 3 day I saw one again in the ceiling can some one tell me what to do please I mean putting a space heater or a humidity fire will work I'm willing to try anything I invest so much on my new wardrobe that I will be devastated can someone please help me thank you so much for reading my story

Just a sales pitch
Are moth balls a wives tale?
I have a possible irrational fear that my closet is fine, but if I put a moth trap in it, it'll possibly bring moths in and they'll wreck havoc. Is this fear founded? :p
If you already have moths in your house, then there is nothing to stop them from coming in anyway. Your closet is full of temptation for them, anyway. The moth trap will just alert you sooner than later that there is a problem.

Did a panty raid on a 76 year old woman and found that most of the underwear in the drawer were soiled and filled with “discharge” (who know when’s the last time they washed that underwear and how often they have reworn it…)
I was immediately disgusted by the streaks of discharge… (I know discharge is normal but … wearing the same pair of underwear multiple times over and stuffing them back in the drawer irregardless or unaware of the discharge…. Unsanitary and GROSS)
Anyways I took out my phone to record the streaks and was zooming into the crusty gunk on every pair of soiled underwear… when unexpectedly I see something MOVING on the camera and upon close inspection found a worm like creature ….
The worm/clothing moth larvae on the discharge filled multiples times worn underwear was the icing on the cake…..)
Beware of what someone looks like on the outside, or house much the try to LOOK good… they may be ignoring things that ACTUALLY matter… like cleanliness, disease, health, (physical and mental) ….
All this to say…. ALWAYS LOOK DEEPER !
