She was half Spanish so no wonder she went mad, but seriously who knows what they meant by mad. Did this mean that she suffered from clinical depression, bipolar, post-traumatic stress due to the earthquake? Who really knows because with misogyny and the patriarchal system will exaggerate or even outright lie. Maria didn’t marry a cousin she married her father’s brother which is incest. Incest has always been taboo even back then. Yes marrying cousins was normal back then but not uncles and aunts or siblings which happened in Ancient Egyptian Royals and Hawaiian Royalty. In Europe hemophilia is common due to all the inter-marriages.
I think the title of this video, which refers to this woman as "incestuous," could make it sound to some like she was responsible for being incestuous; however, this was not the case, as her marriage to her father's brother was arranged for her.
The title doesn't say "Maria, willingly & desperate to be incestuous".All it says is that she was involved in an incestuous relationship which is a fact. And how do yall know she was "forced"🤔 I can't with modern people constantly victimizing all women automatically with no proof🤦🏿♀️
Very true, but her parents were second cousins and both were descended from the Austrian and Spanish Habsburgs. Maria's paternal grandmother was a Habsburg, Maria Anna of Austria as was her maternal great-great grandmother, Maria Theresa of Spain; Louis XIV's wife. Her uncle and grandfather also had melancholia and sever depression at the end of their lives. She was not incestuous, but her ancestry was; being descended from the Habsburg dynasty certainly didn't help.
Insanity was once kept very secret in families, because no one wanted to marry someone who might taint their children, and it is possible just like other physical conditions. Her father's illness brought on by the earthquake, might have been a foreshadowing. It's not perfect, but we can help people who have mental illness. I’m still trying to wrap my brain around being the mother of your cousin and father of your nephew part! No wonder they all seemed mad, too many bloodlines kept so close!
Portugal held its colonies of Goa, in India, and Guiné, Cape Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe, Angola and Mozambique, these all in Africa, until the second half of the 20th century. In the 19th century, after Portugal being the first nation in the world to abolish slavery, our then king and Maria I eldest grandson, Pedro IV, declared Brasil independent, gave up the Portuguese throne to his daughter, Maria II, and became the emperor of Brasil (where slavery was still allowed like in everywhere else besides Portugal at the time). What most likely drove Maria I to her "madness" were the traumatic losses she endured, especially that of the infante Dom José. She even built a cathedral where she had the Prince's body embalmed and in a display coffin so she could visit him every day. It's still there.

Now, no army would have followed any of my schizophrenic clients. I don't know what explains her story....But that isn't it.
I wonder when it was definitive and a matter of absolute scientific fact that incest of any kind produces birth defected children. Ancient Egypt’s pharaohs had generation after generation of very ill and defected kids.. In real life, King Tut’s body was an absolute mess. You mentioned something that... Let's put it nicely, teachers avoid the topic altogether at schools in Portugal. To us, she's recalled not as "the mad" that often but as "mother of people", "the pious one". Only recently did they started to mention her mental issues, only briefly,at more advanced levels of History class. I'm 33, and when I went to school there was no mention whatsoever. That's a good reason why I love to watch History material from a foreigner point of view. "History is written by the victorious". But every country has a different perspective on one same event. On one character.
Shame..poor lady. Must have been very difficult for her and those around her to cope with her madness. Very interesting video. Although I've visited Portugal many times I never knew about that part of history.
There is no Madness in grieving for loss of your children and husband. It happened in time cruelty devastating. To love your babies and see them die suffering from smallpox...... To be female Monarch in a Male political battlefield 🤔 To loose her right hand when her husband died. To loose the Priest she atoned her pain to. Mad 😠 No sad and so would we be too
Exactly! She reacted perfectly normally to very sad situations. What do people expect her to do when loosing all these babies, her husband, the priest, and being surrounded by people who not only she couldn't trust but who most likely plotted against her - jump in the air with joy? But you know what it's like nowadays - every normal emotion nis "mental illness"... must worship at the altar of the new religion called "mental illness" and if you refuse, you are "mentally ill"... - now THIS is insanity!
Another excellent episode. Well researched and presented as always (save for the 16th century reference to 7.7 on the Richter scale which was only devised in 1935) 😉.

Maria I wasn't the first queen regnant of Portugal. Her ancestor, Teresa of Castile, ruled as Countess, and later queen in her own right from 1112-1128.
I adore this Queen Regent Maria 1 of Brazil and 2 of the PT! She knew how to enjoy life in her final moments, even though she didn't have the right mind for it. When she arrived in Brazil, many of her crazy freaks stopped, including her being one of the first people to swim in the beaches of Copacabana and Leblon / waters of Angra dos Reis. And her son, King Dom João 1 of Brazil / 6 of the PT, learned a lot from her, as he was a person who loved to bathe at a time when this was not a common practice! Lol. Other consorts and regents who are also worth knowing are Leopoldina Habsburg, Empress of Brazil, who helped give Brazil its independence, and her mother Maria Teresa of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, the last Empress Consort and Regent of the Holy Roman Empire. Their stories are inspiring, go look for them.
True , she might have been a victim of Bipolar Disorder swinging between mania and depression . A pubertal affliction due to hormonal interplay mainly epinephrine , serotonin . The trigger could be genetic as she had mental illness in the family . Normally bipolars don't have impact on longevity and they are intelligent people . But in manic stages they develop the feeling that they are the best and a sense of grandeur and arrogance . This is the time they take sudden ,rash , risky decision and become aggressive , dogmatic , ruthless , for instance ,she removed the competent Minister because she only thought it to be right . Since at that time such illnesses had no medication her mental health declined . There is no cure but there is Lithium Carbonate treatment that one has to have for life . One other thing is bipolar hits during puberty and most turn sexually aggressive so much so that they can have multiple partners as the urge gets unbearably strong as they age . Not sure Maria had gone through this experience but the fact that she was not choosy and married a 42 year old at the age of 25 and produced 7 children of which 4 died is an indication that she had strong urge to mate . Having said that she did not have menstrual cycle disorder with severe cramp developed due to short cycles and resultant primary or secondary amenorrhea is an indication that she was suffering from hypo mania rather than typical bipolar disorder . Interesting life of a Queen never the less largely successful in her governance and as a hypo manic you can still be a competent individual of authority .
I know it was considered normal back then for family members to marry each-other but I have always found it disgusting when much older men marry young girls. I love my uncle, but the thought of marrying him makes me feel sick, so I can't imagine what the poor girls must have felt, especially if they had to travel to a completely different country.
Yes, she was a very distant descendant of Juana. She was descended from the Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs on both her maternal and paternal sides. This is also probably where her mental illness came from, as many of her family members had been inflicted with melancholia and depression. Not to mention that all the inbreeding the kingdoms of the Iberian peninsula and the Habsburg dysnasty did. Maria most likely suffered from depression and schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and eventually dementia.
so much inbreeding how sick They only thought of power and money no wonder they had so many health problems in the royal families love all your video's ❤❤❤
There was a time in wich it was sort of "normal" among the royales to marry cousins, uncles an so on. Just look at Elizabeth 11 and Phillip, his Mother was Victoria's grandaughther and Elizabeth's father was thé grandson of Victoria's also. Im not saying this to be mean towards them.
It may be a surprise to you, but people have a thing called "estimation" in their pocket. As an aside, that Lisbon earthquake is said to have been one of the main incentivization in the creation of the modern science of Seismology.
Not everything is "mental illness" & a lot of brain disorders like Dementia,Sundowners & Alzheimer's start in midlife depending on childhood illnesses such as Scarlet Fever etc🤷🏿♀️

'Incestuous' would be an intimate relationship with either brothers, sisters, parents, or children! Marrying an uncle is no incest, although we know by now, that too close relationships are not good for one's offspring's health! By the way: queen Victoria married her cousin prince Albert! No incest in sight! But I gather Your intention is putting down

That's a good reason why I love to watch History material from a foreigner point of view. "History is written by the victorious". But every country has a different perspective on one same event. On one character.
Please do about Empresa Leopoldina of Brazil❤️❤️
Will look into her!
Thanks!
Interesting and insightful video, thank you🌹
Shame..poor lady.
To be female Monarch in a Male political battlefield 🤔
To loose her right hand when her husband died.
To loose the Priest she atoned her pain to.
Mad 😠
No
sad and so would we be too
It is kind of crazy that the only "viable" solution found at the time was to marry a young woman to her uncle.
Another excellent episode. Well researched and presented as always (save for the 16th century reference to 7.7 on the Richter scale which was only devised in 1935) 😉.
Glad you enjoyed! The 7.7 or greater is what modern eismologists estimate it to have been :)
Very good as usual
Thanks 👊
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hi. What is your original language? You sure are good at pronouncing multiple languages! Great job!
Thanks! English and Spanish :)
@@ForgottenLives Excellent job pronouncing multiple languages, you sound FLUENT with correct intonations, etc. German, French, Spanish, etc. Really do sound like a fluent speaker.
@Ms Bliss Get out more. Good grief
@Nao Nyaru Lots of things to consider in deed. But that was a good try.
The announcer looks like my oldest son. Its amazing.
Does anyone know what is that beautiful music they always play in the background in these videos?
Thank you.
Than you.
She lost almost all her kids she can go mad
Maria I wasn't the first queen regnant of Portugal. Her ancestor, Teresa of Castile, ruled as Countess, and later queen in her own right from 1112-1128.
Fascinating
I'M STILL DANCING ❤️👍👍
Ever since MatPat mentioned her, I’ve wanted to know more.
Any chance of you having a look at Percy Harrison Fawcett, an English explorer in South America, please.
Her full name is Maria Francisca Isabel Josefa Antonia Gertrudes Rita Joana
Time for a bedtime story
Its unfortunate that she wasn't stable enough to accept the honor of being Queen of Brazil
How do we know how big the earthquake was on the rictor (no idea how to spell) scale.
I know it was considered normal back then for family members to marry each-other but I have always found it disgusting when much older men marry young girls. I love my uncle, but the thought of marrying him makes me feel sick, so I can't imagine what the poor girls must have felt, especially if they had to travel to a completely different country.
Any reation to Joanna the Mad of spain?
Yes, she was a very distant descendant of Juana. She was descended from the Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs on both her maternal and paternal sides. This is also probably where her mental illness came from, as many of her family members had been inflicted with melancholia and depression. Not to mention that all the inbreeding the kingdoms of the Iberian peninsula and the Habsburg dysnasty did. Maria most likely suffered from depression and schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and eventually dementia.
hi, do you happen to be Portuguese? you have an interestingly good Portuguese and English accent...
Uncle and niece marrying is a no no. It's a wonder they had normal kids. Very wrong.
so much inbreeding how sick
They only thought of power and money no wonder they had so many health problems in the royal families
love all your video's ❤❤❤
Her mother was Mariana Victoria of Spain.
I have never seen portraits of the aristocracy with buck teeth.
The day of the earthquake was the day that Marie Antionette was born dark irony there
o oreias era um camelo com 2 bossas e muito pelo.
In 1646, King John IV offered the crown to the Virgin Mary. Our Lady of Conception is our monarch.
180 years before the Richter scale was invented they had an approximate RS measurement?
It may be a surprise to you, but people have a thing called "estimation" in their pocket.
As an aside, that Lisbon earthquake is said to have been one of the main incentivization in the creation of the modern science of Seismology.
I've been curious about this since I watched dragrace espana lol
Poor girl why would they make her marry her own uncle? Wtf 🤮🤮🤮😳
Not everything is "mental illness" & a lot of brain disorders like Dementia,Sundowners & Alzheimer's start in midlife depending on childhood illnesses such as Scarlet Fever etc🤷🏿♀️
It's not as if she had ANY choice in who she married. Those things were decided by the men in her life.
She was depressed beyond understanding and they toke advantage of that since she is a woman and that was it
Her kids would also inherit madness from both sides it was better to marry in other family.
Reminds me of House of the Dragon
"Marquis"- (Mar-Key). Please use proper English.
One day you should show up in a ruffled shirt.. powdered wig .. and a mole... I know they are called something else. Yeah.. that would be great 👍.lol. I love your channel. I remember when your first upload came out. Well done. ❤
Live expectancy was low back then
Everyone married young
That's because we are not to go royal with kings queens and such.since Christians and such say they're getting picked on
'Incestuous' would be an intimate relationship with either brothers, sisters, parents, or children!
Marrying an uncle is no incest, although we know by now, that too close relationships are not good for one's offspring's health!
By the way: queen Victoria married her cousin prince Albert! No incest in sight!
But I gather Your intention is putting down
