But I'm hoping for something more out there such as the town being an entity's subconscious, the "Shadow Realm" according to Carl Gustav Jung, a twisted take on either Valhalla or the Garden Eden or a testing ground for emerging deities/myths.

You're cooking but how do you save someone in hell when you are condemned to hell. What I mean is, why is there a need to save the Ankui kids from the tower. There are no saviors in hell. Everyone should be damned, isn't it? Also how does the concept of death exist in hell.... Tian Chen, Boyd's wife etc...?
While I don't agree with him that the town is hell, the monsters coming out only at night might be a way of giving the humans a false sense of security and hope. They're toying with them. I believe this season we may see the monsters roaming around during daytime. Heck some of the humans may be monsters themselves and no one knows.

I see it as more of a purgatory that can be twisted into hell for a time and also have aspects of heaven as well, which is why the lighthouse to me is the representation of the mountain that a soul ascends to reach the light slowly.
What about megan or victor or ethan or julie none of them are evil or bad. No i dont think this is hell or purgatory or anything thats an afterlife. I think dale said it right when he said its a pocket universe
