You seem to have completely misunderstood the von Mises graphs. The red arrow indicates the yield strength of the material, so in both cases it is the same value. The highest stress is given by the value at the top of the graph. This means the stresses where actually about 70% higher when you had the Gusset due to the stress concentrations it caused. And in both cases the yield stress was exceeded so neither part can withstand that force.
