I absolutely loved this movie. It was fantastically done. I also sort of love how it along with Sneakers bookend two great Robert Redford ensemble comedy/drama caper movies.

I saw this once about 20 years ago and I got a kick out of it! Josh Olson hit it right on the nose...a fun caper! The part that I never forgot was when the one guy gets out of prison (Segal, I think) and meets up with the other (Redford?) and says something like "Ay, it's me!" and gets popped in the face, then they go the next scene. That was funny! Gotta find this on DVD...

This is one of the most underrated films and Robert Redford films for such. It is entertaining, engaging, vibrant, nicely paced, humorous and perfectly cast. Look no further than supporting roles of late Zero Mostel and late Moses Gunn. Not to mention the fine gents who play opposite Redford's character. Films like these are near impossible to make now because stars have to have the best lines and seen having all the fun thus the supporting actors are mere props for whatever the star is doing next. Every scene reads like a cameo of the star. Here and the genius of Robert Redford is he never plays the star in any film I've ever seen him in. He knows he is only as good as the support he gets from true professionals like George Segal and Ron Leibman, who are totally up for the task and bring their own star power to round out an excellent cast. I met and talk with Robert Redford before and if he viewed himself as a mega superstar he did an excellent job at concealing it. He blends into his role seamlessly and with respect to the story itself. There a romantic aspects to films like this that are totally absent in today's product and that's all it is...a product.

i loved the book, and this film does justice to the story. It's too bad that the other Dortmunder films are not that good.

Can't understand why anyone would think this film worked. It doesn't work as a comedy as it's just not funny & it doesn't work as a heist thriller as there is no 'heist', just 3 bungled & utterly implausible break ins. I've not read Westlake's novel but it just has not translated to film. There are far superior 'caper' films than this, even the crappy 'Inside Out' is better, though another Savalas picture 'Crooks And Coronets' is far superior if you're looking for a light hearted caper film.
Redford is dreadful in this film, apparently in a trance for the most part but when he does get to move his face, eg. when Segal nearly drives into him, his attempts to register some kind of emotion are woeful. And the Quincy Jones score is typically intrusive as it is in 'The Anderson Tapes' but at least that's a well put together heist film, Yates was no Sidney Lumet, 'The Friends Of Eddie Coyle' though overrated is his only standout film, what's left in his filmography other than the overrated 'Bullit' & the old fashioned 'Robbery'?
'The Hot Rock' needed a different cast & a Jules Dassin or Henri Verneuil at the helm. Sorry to say that Americans & Brits just aren't very good at heist pictures.
