- In this video I bring you along as I finish making the basket for the front of my Yamaha Big Bear. It's smooth sailing from here after overcoming a few challenges in the first video bending the square tubing. I think it turns out pretty good in the end!
-Enjoy!
Great job Eric! I have a milk crate zip tied to my front "rack". Works a treat. Took me 5 minutes, been there 10 years :-)
Me too!
Cement mixing tub from home depot for me. Cheap and quick and doesn't rust.
You do dang fine work for someone who says they aren’t a metal worker!
I was impressed you put the “cage” metal inside the tubes
Awesome build Eric! Diggin the after hours!
I realize now I could watch this man work on anything…
Loving the After Hours channel. Thanks for the variety of content
Great job Eric. I like your attention to detail and your commitment to doing things right even if it takes more time. The result is worth the time.
My wife, God rest her sole, used to tell me. "John, you aren't building a piano!" Build it, send it! Close enough is probably better than "factory"!
Always more satisfying when you fabricate vs buying!
Dang! Eric O outclassed my laundry basket and bungee cords!
That project turned out excellent, your attention to detail shows through no matter what you work on.
That turned out awesome! I would recommend using spacers or bushings on the mounting bolts so it's less likely to rattle
I was looking forward to the nutsert install, auxiliary light mounts and powder coat! Looks great!
Steinway would be proud to have you work for them… Come on Eric, it's just a basket!
Great job man! Just for future reference the trick to bending square tubing is to make sure to collapse the inside of the bend first by placing an appropriate sized round solid stock either on the bender or on the tube. That will make a much prettier and controlled bend.
Looks great to me. Good job. Welded 23 years at a power plant, the boss was watching me , come over and said "we're not building Cadilacs here." Get it close and go on to the next project. Plenty more work.
I think it turned out great, the only thing I would have done differently is add a 3rd support on the bottom in the middle between the other two, probably doesn’t need it though, I just tend to overbuild things.
Nice to see someone taking a job seriously that doesn't necessarily need to perfect! I watched both videos, chuckling to myself, because I did this exact job for my farmer dad and his 4-wheeler. Took me too long, but I wanted it correct. Made it, attached it, surprised him with it, and the first thing he did was stick a pry bar between the front top and bottom rails and bend the bottom one outward so he could "use it as a bumper", lol Whatayagonnado, huh?
You're the Michelangelo of basket making.
Turned out great. I like the look of inserting the expanded metal in the gaps, instead of just laying it over the whole thing. Hope we get to see it all painted up, and installed when we see the ATV again!
South Main Auto.. Nice project Eric and it turned out great. Probably last longer than the 4wheeler.
You are too modest. This was a masterful piece of work. I particularly liked the way that you inlaid the expanded metal within the frame rather than just overlaying it.
Great job Eric. It's always fun to play with the welder, especially when the project will be a useful one.
Thanks for all the content on both channels. Great stuff
Brave man welding and fabricating on you tube. Great job, I really enjoy both of your channel's!
That's one heavy duty pic-a-nic basket Eric! Looks good to me.
I kept thinking about what I would do next and it was exactly how you did it. It's perfect. I couldn't have done it better myself. Great minds think alike. It doesn't get any better than that. Shazam!
That will be used for generations to come always cool to make stuff that’s just laying around into something useful 👍👍
Great! Now you have a 5,000# rated basket on a 600# 4x4 to carry 5# of cargo. I like it. FYI I have a Hummer too.
Looks good and sometimes the satisfaction of building something instead of just buying it is well worth the time spent.
I enjoy watching a man who takes it on the fly
Better and stronger than anything you could buy.
Looks like a fun project, much better than just ok. I likely wouldn't have worried much about how it looked, only how well it functioned.
Just one more thing Eric can do that I cannot.
This basket looks sturdy af. Thumbs up
Nice job Eric, it’s not going to the moon, just the woods, good enough for the girls you run with 😃👍
I wasn't going to say it, but you asked for tips and thinking of making another one for the back.....
I would have turned the bottom of the rack upside-down, so with the metal mesh to the original frame, winning another inch of space in height and volume. 🤷♂️
Great project Eric! 👍
the attention to details shows too well the man you are Eric 💎, great outcome while having fun .👍🏼
Eric, after seeing what you're going through, You could have built 5 of them just by making 22 1/2degree cuts and welding them flat. Not round but a 45 flat to keep from catching your cloths. Love your videos! Thanks.
That's a basket any man could (and should) be proud of. Should hold any party supplies you need for your treks into the bush. Love it! Another nice job, Eric! PS Love the family pic! ❤
Lots of creative juices makes for a great project!
Eric... That is Awesome! Very Well Done!!
That basket is bad ass! It will outlast the quad! Great job!
Very good fabrication, a blind man would be glad to see it!
You did a fantastic job on it. It does look very nice with the round edges. Fits the style of the original bracket. So good job Mr. O. Red Green says "If the women dont find you handsom at least let them find you handy."
Just sat down and this appeared. Great job 👍
Yay Eric O. Ya fit to play with the welder. You let us all follow along on the basket journey. Mrs. O will love carrying her arrows in that basket. Just awesome. I love your after hours as well. Kudos sir.
Eric, from one DIY fabricator to another, your ability, patience and “sticktoitiveness” is inspiring and motivating. Love the main channel with the all the antics. But I recently found this channel and love it for being a little more focused and just you in your element. Thank you for taking the time to film, edit and share with all of us on the ‘tube!
Nice work. Craftsmanship on a great little project.
That is a nice basket! 10/10 would ride in it 😎
Looks good enough for the girls I go out with!
If I was to do anything different, I'd use round tube but, for projects like this, you use what you have on hand.
Thank you for taking us along for the ride, Eric O.!
Nice project coming along well Eric O love how you cut the expanded Metal and Recessed it looks very clean 18:28 @Eric O - After Hours
Looks like a new side biz to me!
That's so cool... I'm going to build something similar for my tractor. Tired of driving out to the other end of the field with a shovel, rake and a chain saw balanced in my lap... Thanks Eric for taking us along on this project!
Sure is a lot of a hullabaloo to make a basket for the front. Need to primer and paint it too !!! But something homemade always outlasts something store bought !!! I agree Eric, you did a superb job on that basket, wonderful !!!!! 🥰😸💯👍👍🥳🤗
Eric I feel you did an Amazing Job, It looks awesome and ment to be there, very Impressive,
Awesome Fab work 100% well done. Maybe some auxiliary lights added also. Nice thing about the diamond plate is no need for tie downs welded on.
You made a lovely job of that Eric, you could get about 50 Ice Creams in that and it's nice to use up stuff that's kicking around.
Guaranteed this basket will last longer than anything you buy. Great work.
Great job Eric don't be so homble that was a awsome basket.
in the end this build does exactly what you wanted it to
Nice job Eric... it looks great. The well-made "homemade" nature of it makes it nicer.
"Not your forte". Yeah right! Your attention to detail and your care/passion you present makes you better! Great video!
Dang son.....Great job Eric.
Great watching a craftsman make a basket no blue prints
Personally, I think it looks great but all the work that I’ve seen you do always does come out. Excellent Big Ed coming to you from Central City Kentucky. Have a great and wonderful day.
Glad you put the wire mesh inside the basket rails, those edge will bite you😂 great job🎉
Nicely done Eric.👌
Doing the inserts looks so much better than just wrapping it around.🤙
Turned out good! It should come in really handy!
I think the basket is really strong and well built. Will last a lifetime.
For someone who claims it isn't your forte, you did a awesome job building that basket. Those welds will probably last longer than factory welds.
You said you didn't have a plan, but that's not true. You have an idea in your mind of what you wanted. For a project like this, or any other project, that's all the plan you need. An idea. Tweaking takes place as the project progress. Been there done that, as many have.
Make sure we see the painted and attached results. Don't forget the primer paint.
I’m pretty sure I can do that too! Thanks for the inspiration Eric ✌️
All that matter is your happy with the outcome of the build looks great great content
I just love these kind of jobs! I do them as much as I can! just one thing, you were building it on a steel table, put the ground clamp on the table and you wont need to reclamp it all the time! but of corse don't lift the project off of the table while welding! it can ruin a good pair of underware!
amazing. from scrap. love it
Nice job Eric! That will fit right on my Kodiak. Now just need to make another one for you. He he. FYI for painting, I've been using Rustoeum Appliance epoxy paint. No primer needed. I just wipe it down with mineral spirits and paint it. The epoxy paint should be left to cure for a week or so. (the epoxy does take a while to harden up)
Very nice. A novel Easter Basket 💯
A good buddy of mine is a retired mechanic, and I've witnessed him welding on many occasions over the years, and he often did what you demonstrated here, which is to place the tip of the welding head close to the work and then close his eyes/use no shield for the brief time that was required to tack the metal together. This, however, exposes one to intense visible and ultraviolet radiation, albeit for a relatively brief amount of time. I wondered about the risks using this method, especially as he used it for decades. It turns out that even brief exposures to this kind of emitted light are quite hazardous. Use the mask before you strike your arc. And read the scientific paper "Hazard of ultraviolet radiation emitted in gas metal arc welding of mild Steel" for evidence.
Had a relative die of cancer brought about by welding without PPE for decades.
WOW Eric, the basket is worth more than the Quad!
I like I; looks very functional and professionally built. When you get around to building something similar for the back half of the ATV, I think you should just go for a solid mount for a rocking chair. Would make a great-looking rig for you and Mrs. O to be zipping down a wooded lane together.
I put a big cargo box on the back of my atv, it’s an older 450 Yamaha and I don’t use it recreationally. That cargo basket looks handy for tossing stuff in while your working, the cargo box is nice too if you have anything you don’t want wet or frozen, slings, jacket, gloves. Keeps my day pack dry and secure if I take it out hunting occasionally too.
Great project. Will do the job it was intended for.
Looks strong enough to set a 5.3 in there. Looks good.
Turned out great. I was half expecting a basket made out of exhaust tubing since that's kind of your thing.
There's a bit of work and thought that goes into something that looks so simple. Nice work Eric 👍
Nice, the salvage yard is full of those bungee cargo nets that come in SUV’s
A few years ago. I helped my brother in law build one like yours. So happens that if you build a big basket and its heavy. It flips over easily because of the center of gravity is changed. Thats why honda didn't build baskets for it.
We ended cutting it down to a much smaller and smaller tubing helped.
Thinking about it now. If I had a mig welder with Al-min-u-mum that's the cat meow. Much lighter too.
Good job Mr. O... keep on keepin on,,really enjoy ur videos..
Love this new channel. Great job on the basket. I built one for the back of my quad but didn’t have curves because I didn’t have tubing bender. Now I know how to build a tubing bender. Keep ‘em coming.
Suddenly my morning coffee tasted like grinding steel smells. 😝
Great job.
Nice job Eric O. You are now officially a metal fabricator amongst all your other skills.
Looking good Mr O 👍👍👍👍👍
A. Tisket a. Tasket, Eric o made a basket lol. Great job Eric. I like this sub channel Hope you bring us along for the next part
Well done Eric!
Marvelous job Eric-o!!! Your a man of many talents!! CHEERS 🍻
I like it and your bending device does a great job. All in all a nice addition to the wheeler.
Looks Great. Nice Job 👍
I really like that. Great job.
Another great video from Eric O 👍👍💯💯. The basket is looking great, and better build than what you can buy 💯💯. Plus you seem to enjoy doing it.
Very cool and thank you for bring us along for the ride. Now send that baby out for powder coating!
