Jack Whitaker, Frank Wright and Woody Broun discuss the field before the historic running of the Belmont. The great Chic Anderson provides his classic call of the race.
Stay tuned for the CBS broadcasts of the 1973 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, as well as many other broadcasts from the past.
Does anyone else watch this every day?
"That is a record that may stand forever." So far so good!
I recall an interview with Mrs. Penny Tweedy (now Chenery - who in 2015, is age 93 - and God bless HER big heart!) Secretariat's owner, said that for some few seconds she thought it would be "Sham's day." Sham was a great horse as well, and had beaten Secretariat in a previous race. Miss Penny was fully accepting of the outcome (and missing out on the Triple Crown title), but knew that she and her team did all they could to ensure Secretariat's win at the Belmont Stakes. And just as this thought went through her mind (was Secretariat reading it?) he kicked into a higher gear which seemed to scream, "in no way will I lose this!" The great Sham was left in the dust by the incredible (!) drive of Secretariat. Sham was very good - and Secretariat was simply great! Secretariat (on June 9, 1973) was already a star - by the early morning hours of June 10th he was a legend.
Coming up on 40 years since "Big Red's" amazing feat. He still is an awesome site.
Thanks for the vids, cf1970
I really like the movie Secretariat because of the he just takes off and leaves Sham with the other horses in the pack. Then when I heard that Secretariat had won by 31 lengths I was really supprised because of how much he had won by.
Frank Wright notes there were only 4 American races on dirt of any moment (importance) of a mile and a half or more...I'll try to identify them...Belmont Stakes (12f since 1926 except 2000, other distances earlier, 3yo), Woodward Stakes (12f 1972-75, 3yo+), Jockey Club Gold Cup (16f 1921-75, 12f 1976-89, 3yo+), Display Handicap (16f-18f, 3yo+). That was then. ... Inaugurated in 2008 is the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes (12f-14f, 3yo+).
Interesting. Thanks!
@horshooer When you consider that Sham's effort in the Derby also broke the old Derby record, that no record was set in the Preakness, and that he fell back so far in this race--it appears that each loss to Secretariat took something out of him. I didn't know that he never ran again, but it doesn't surprise me.
I've read somewhere that it wasn't JUST his heart that was special but combined with his stride -simply unbeatable. How did he lose races in the beginning of his career?? I don't think he found his stride... :)
srfh2 Was manhandled in his first race out of the gait, and sick for two of his losses, Ron Turcotte did not want him to run when he was ill, but Lauren told him, he's running. Interesting note srfh, every time Red lost he went out and set a record the next time out, :)
So much for all the effort and planning put into horse breeding by those wealthy owners. It is mostly a waste. Secretariat owns all 3 records for the triple crown and all subsequent breeding efforts have produced nothing even close to his agility, speed and raw magnificence.
3 triple crown races. 3 stake records. What he accomplished cannot be overstated and never duplicated.
Unbelievable...
I saw this race.
With my Dad... Who said, with tears in his eyes: "Janie...this will be the best horse...EVER".... MY Dad Was Right.
Best Horse.50 years later..still the best.
"That is a record that may stand forever." 50 years on, Chic was right. No horse anywhere (not just Belmont) has even approached Secretariat's time in this race. The next-fastest 12F on dirt is 2:25 2/5; no horse anywhere, ever, on its best day, would have been closer than seven lengths to Secretariat in this race.
He's moving like a tremendous machine....one of the greatest sporting commentaries ever.
I am convinced the 1973 Belmont victory is the greatest athletic perfomance in sports history. He broke the track record by almost 3 seconds with his jockey never even showing the whip.
We'll never see this happen again, never in the history of horse racing. I remember when it happened and every time I watch it I still have chills & cry!! A true champion.
same here Jackie- still thrills me and brings the tears> Saw it on TV when it happened, and save it on my PC
I think it’s awesome that 50 years later no horse has broken any of these records. Belmont will never be beaten in my lifetime.
The beauty and power of this horse got me through some some tough times over the last 50 or so years . Inspirational!
One of the greatest performances an athlete has ever performed. He is a tremendous machine.
I really do NOT UNDERSTAND why after all of these Decades they have NOT HONORED SECRETARIAT, WITH A SPECIAL RACE AWARD IN HIS NAME ENTITLED,
"THE SECRETATIAT"
The 1973 Belmont Stakes: one of the few mythological occurrences ever captured on film.
VampireYoshi I've never heard anyone say that. You're 100% correct. Great thought!
"He is moving like a tremendous machine", says it all !!!
40 years on this remains the greatest 2:24 in sports history.
Secretariat will always be #1, not Man-O 'War, not Affirmed, not Seattle Slew, They were all Champions but there will NEVER be another Secretariat!!!!!
This horse was amazing! I got to watch him run all three races and the Belmont was something magical. I still cry when I watch it. Every. Single. Time. Goosebumps, as well. He was something extraordinary.
I was 22 years old and in college watching it alone in my room. I cried like everyone else who saw it because we all knew at the time that we were seeing something "spiritual" in nature. I felt that God was right there that day. I truly believe that not one soul who saw this race ever questioned the existence of God ever again. How could U ? My favorite part is watching the stride of Secretariat and how he ran through the tape and beyond . He was in such a "zone" that he could have run forever.
I never get tired of watching this video. What an amazing horse.
To this day, this is still one of the greatest sporting events I've ever watched. Hard to believe that it's been 40 years ago. Every time I watch this race, I still get goose bumps.
What's really amazing is that 40 years later, Secretariat still holds the record best time for ALL three of the Triple Crown races!
The 9 people who gave this video the thumbs-down must have been dumb enough to bet against Secretariat at this race. Secretariat was so good it was almost ridiculous.
All because a woman, and all of her friends took a chance on a foal. He will always be the greatest sports champion. One of the greatest to ever live
No one will match Secretariat.
I have always been captivated by his beautiful and magnificent animal - clearly the greatest horse ever. Just as this race chokes me up, I am equally impressed by his Preakness win. His sudden and awe-inspiring explosion on the back stretch of that race leaves me speechless. I remember being horribly sad when he died.
@giles422 The part that gets me is when Chick Anderson says... "But Secretariat is all alone!" The way he says 'alone' is like he's just in shock! I get chills every time I see this race! What a great horse.
I love what Lucien Lauren said his instructions were to Ronnie Turcotte: "Just leave him alone. Put him on a long hold and let him run his own race." :) In this clip it's about the 5:00 mark, if you've watched his legs to that point, you can see him move into the 'zone.' Once he gets there, he just keeps moving.....like a tremendous machine. ♥
Doesn't matter how many times I watch this...choked up, tears a'rollin.........
When God made Secretariat, he threw away the mold. There will never ever be a horse as great as Secretariat. And there will be none even close.
Secretariat remains the greatest race horse the world has ever seen or known.
He will live forever.
I love this video, what a brilliant horse Secretariat was. To me he will always be the greatest race horse of all time. I believe he understood what he was being asked to do and did it with authority, with grace, class, and an incredible intelligence unlike most horses have. What an athlete..
Without question..the greatest athletic performance in sports history! Demolished the competitition...shattered the track record while winning the triple crown! His time of 2:24 is a full TWO SECONDS faster than the next fastest Belmont Stakes winner and this time still stands as the WORLD RECORD for a mile and a half on a dirt track!
It doesn't matter how many times I view this, I just can't believe what I'm seeing. Simply the greatest athletic performance ever.
Glad I was alive to see this.
I remember watching that race and having so many emotions, he's going too fast, elation as he came down the stretch, and disbelief at the time of the race. There will never be another horse like him.
Love you BIG RED the best athlete of all time he is the 🐐 🐐 G.O.A.T.
In Forty years no one has touched his records yet. That is a long time in horse racing.
The coincidence of the cinematography is stunning - the classic call of "Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine!" just as the horse passes the American Flag on the infield. Tremendous indeed.
The most stunning sports performance ever captured on film. In a thoroughbred horse race where:
1. Secretariat's lead is given in fractions of a mile.
2. The camera has to pan back to see the rest of the field after he crosses the finish line.
3. Ron Turcotte said that the horse was running 'easy' that day. No strain.
4. Secretariat set a world record in the mile and a half that day. Still stands.
there are some criticisms in Secretariat's breeding, that would make him come up short in the homestretch. Love it love it love it. He made them eat their words that day.
The greatest racehorse in history in his most dominate performance. R.I.P. Great Horse.
As a huge sports fan myself, I say without hesitation that Big Red was the greatest athlete .... and his Belmont was the greatest sporting accomplishment .... ever!! Complete perfection in every way.
I don't know how many thousands time I watched Secretariat. Every time tears come to my eyes. He will remain to be the greatest horse forever.
The greatest performance by a horse ever. No horse will ever duplicate this effort.
As Secretariat rounded the last turn trainers of every other horse were in the infield and were screaming encouragement and ecstatically rooting for Secretariat for they for knew they were watching a wondrous event: the most amazing horse in history.
To me, the biggest triumph of this horse's breeding is that his legs held up under all that weight, all that muscle. He really was a perfect athlete as well as a rock star. I've never forgotten seeing him for the first time in the Derby - and he only got better. This race was almost a thumbing of the nose - I think you could have put Man'O'War and Citation there and he would still have pulled away from them like they were standing still.
And the record still stands. He was not even pushed down the stretch. He probably could have ran it another second faster.
"That is a record that may stand forever!" Boy, he called that one!
He is moving like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE.....!!
My question is this, How the heck does this horse run the fastest 3/4 mile in Belmont history and then turns it on for his finishing kick with 3/4 of a mile left and speeds up thru every quarter mile the whole race? Truly a once in a lifetime thing to see it, I was 13 and I haven't seen anything like it since and never expect too! It is the single greatest athletic performance ever given, by man or beast, perfection in every way!
It's like your brain can not accept what your eyes are seeing. After his death an autopsy determined his heart was twice the size of a normal horse....but I think we already knew that. :)
LMAO! Of all the Secretariat trivia I have collected, I never knew Frank Wright said "Dick Butkus could have ridden this horse an won!."That made me laugh, but is true!
He Laughs at fear, afraid of nothing. He does not shy away from the sword. He cannot stand still when the trumphet sounds!!
I'm Aussie, 53 and love our champions, Phar Lap, Kingston Town, Black Caviar etc, etc but this horse was something special, maybe even freakish and just a bit scary. How did he know a horse could run that fast. I am so happy to have been alive to have seen the great Secretariat but it is also so sad, his unfortunate death, the jockeys tragic accident. I guess even perfection is flawed.
It would be the event of the century if somehow phar lap and secretiat could have ran a match race 2 of the greatest race horses to have ever lived
To those that say Ron Turcotte was a great jockey, yes, he was pretty good. But the fact is, that almost any jockey could have won on Secretariat that day. Turcotte was just hanging on, trying not to fall off, lol. As the announcer said, "moving like a tremendous machine", and he was. The greatest horse in this old man's lifetime. I've been watching horses race for 60 years, and no comparison to Secretariat by any of them.
What a wonderful horse! I remember crying while watching the race on tv! I don't believe there will ever be another horse like Secretariat!
I watch Secretariat @ Belmont at lease once a week - so inspiring yet almost surerreal - seeing this glorious chestnut animal as our world's Pegasus, if only for a brief time. The clip of the race was filmed to perfection, but after all it's Secretariat. Perhaps all the Sagittarius in me makes it better every time, but I doubt it - anyone who loves horses ups the stairway a bit further with each watch. Thank you so so much.
The greatest horse ever and I was privileged to have watched him in his greatest moments. Just. magnificent and his like will never come again
10,000 is probably because of me. I can not watch this miracle horse enough. This horse should be watched 2 billion times by now. ZENYATTA is my second favorite horse. This world has seen great horses so far, like Frankel, Ruffian, Black Caviar, ZENYATTA, but SECRETARIAT will always be ahead of these great horses forever.
Had to me more than 25 lengths. And he was still pulling away in the last 300 meters. Incredible. Looks like he could have run forever. Flying down the stretch.
To quote Penny from Secretariat's perspective: "I've won your race now I'm going to show you what I can do on a mile and a half track,"
Once every so often we see greatness that defies all logic
Right before he goes into the winners circle, the people cheer and then it looked like Secretariat was saying thank you to them by bobbing his head a few times in front of the audience. LOL what a character.
Breaking a track record by 2 3/5 seconds? That's just crazy.
Tthe Belmont. Watch the last 20 yrds. or so. Watch Turcotte. Watch his head. The horse was running that day n sayin 'Man, I feel good.'He was doing all that n his own till Turcotte glanced @ the Longines Timer n realized if he ASKED him 2 run, a World record was possible. Turcotte said, "I always wanted2 c what this big puppy could do. let's go. N he did. A picture, rarely seen taken from the dead front, shows the horse, eyes , due 2 some quirk of lighting glowing n U know what the horse was sayin? 'Man , I feel good!'
He was sick when he lost that ONE RACE. I was AT BELMONT that day, the place LEVITATED. Ron Turcotte seemed to look over his shoulder when Secretariat - all alone in his own race - hit the back stretch. What he was actually doing was looking at the CLOCK because he couldn't believe how FAST the horse was moving. He had trouble stopping Secretariat, he wanted to KEEP RUNNING, he probably could have done it AGAIN. This was a magical moment, one that will NEVER EVER be seen again in horse racing.
I read the book by William Nack titled Secretariat: The Making Of A Champion and I would encourage any horse fan to read this great story. On this day, we saw greatness unbridled. It's moments like this that remind us all of what can be accomplished. The will to win... the belief in one's self... the absolute sheer dominance by a horse who decided... Today... I am going to run my race, my way!
You are THE MAN Secretariat! You are THE MAN!
One of the greatest sporting events i've ever seen. This run and Franz Klammer in the downhill at the olympics are unbelievable.
I love this, I love seeing all of the pre-race footage & knowing what these people are about to witness. I would have given anything to have seen this race live. I've watched this race 100s of times and every single time I tear up and get goosebumps! What a horse. Bless you, Secretariat.
Forty years ago today....he was Pegasus.
Every time I watch this reinforces just how MONUMENTAL an event this was not just in terms of horse racing, but as the rarest of displays when something on the fringes of supernatural occurs that pushes the bounds of what is possible. This is beyond greatness. This is a dream materialized.
Mitch
very inspiring creature. He teaches us that you dont need to have a perfect record to be the greatest and most loved. The great moments always outshine the losses in life. And one can rise up to greatness after experiencibg defeats. Those TC wins were just phenomenal, jawdropping, record setting. His records still stand to this day.I remember those moments.A joy forever i will remember till death.
Watch this about every three weeks, proud to have been a teenager then, and to have witnessed this.
I was only 11 at the time when the1973 Belmont Stakes was run. This ranks as the top sports moment that I was able to see whether in person or on TV. For me, this ranks higher than Hank Aaron's 715th home run and the miracle on ice by team USA in 1980. I cry every time I watch this race. One of the many documentaries had a story Heywood Hale Broun told where he saw Jack Nicklaus a few weeks after the race. The Golden Bear knew that Broun had been at the race. He mentioned that he was all alone watching the race and said you could see someone trying for a lifetime to achieve perfection, but on that day you saw it. I was glad when they finally corrected Big Red's time for the Preakness giving him the record for all three triple crown races,
Agree with you! The only other sporting event that I got close to feeling the same as watching Secretariat win the Belmont was watching the USA Hockey Team beat the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics!
The first time a saw this i didn't know anything about horse racing. But even I said "Yeah, that isn't supposed to happen."
I watch this at least once a week and cry everytime I watch it. What a beautiful horse, and in my opinion the greatest thus far of all time. I watched this live in 1973 while in college and cried then too. I love that horse.... Rest in Peace our beautiful big red. I hope you are running in heavenly places..
These posts of Big Red are just great.
So much time has past that I don't think people really appreciate how great this triple crown was. It had been 25 yrs since Citation and some thought it would never happen again.
Listen to, "he is moving like a tremendous machine" and I still get goose bumps.
And this performance is what stamps him as The Greatest!!!
Tremendous!!!
I have to watch this again to see what a champion horse really is and to listen to classy owners after having to listen to California Chrome's co-owner Steve Coburn whine about how rested horses shouldn't of run in the Belmont and many others harping how the rules need to be changed. Watching this reminds me how great an accomplishment winning the Triple Crown is and only the greats like Secretariat are worthy of it.
I watch this a couple of times a year. I still think the horse is going to collapse down the stretch every time I watch it.... I remember after watching Secretariat start dead last in the Derby and Preakness, I remember thinking during the week, what would happen if this horse started out normally? Well, I found out!
BIG RED incredible!
Big Red was never "hit" with the whip. The classic photo of Turcotte turning back to see where the h*ll everyone went - this was a Champion. Secretariat, the greatest.
I've watched Secretariat's movie. Sooo here i am. Because i couldnt believe that was real. But that was real. Thats an unbelievable victory. Oh my god, im still crying -_-
Elis Zeynep Amazing wasn't he!
The most amazing thing ever! *****
I suppose the most incredible aspect of what happened that day is the raw emotion that just poured forth from the eyes and lips of everyone who saw it in real time. Everyone knew "as it was happening" that they would never ever see such a spiritual moment again, no matter how long they lived on earth. It was not necessary to try and explain that experience because it was shared by everyone else and you knew it. I watched it alone in my room. But that day I saw the only proof I ever needed to see that there really was a God and Secretariat was His horse. And I swear that I saw both of them on my TV that day.
I was 13 years old and watched it alone. It was just as you said.
Something else that was incredible to me that day was my mother's reaction. She wasn't really into horseracing (?), so imagine my surprise when she yelled "Fourteen lengths ON THE TURN?!" (my mother never yelled) and ran in from the kitchen to watch the rest of this unbelievable "race."
See, how ma'am penny is so much overwhelmed and proud of her Big RED
31 lengths..
Sham might have been second if he hadn't tried to stay with SECRETARIAT the first 3/4 of a mile .
"almost embarrassing to the rest of the horses"; believe the win was by an easily World Record 31 lengths - amazing horse
This is perfection race. When he says "He's moving like a tremendous machine" along with the crowd noise going up in decibel level, it's like a movie. If you don't get goosebumps, you have no emotions.
It's like he wanted to put a stamp on being the greatest of the Triple Crowners. While at the same time put on a display of beauty for us to see to this very day!
I was a horse-crazy preteen girl when Secretariat ran this race, so I actually made a point of watching this, the peak of the Triple Crown. I remember feeling embarrassed for the rest of the field and excited beyond words for Secretariat's unbelievable victory. What a thrilling and beautiful moment in history!
I was a little older but also horse-crazy, and sobbed in my room for two hours afterward.
with only 5 in the field, some might have said that the Triple Crown was handed to Secretariat... even had he run just a good race, folks might have belittled the accomplishment. When you run 2:24 and crush the record.... greatness is rightly stamped upon you. Go Big Red..... forever!
Secretariat set three records to win the triple crown that still stand today no horse has ever come close period
I was 8 years old when Big Red won the tripple crown; and, it was Secretariat's magnificent performance here at the Belmont that helped seal my love for horse racing forever. Thank you so much for posting this.
It's amazing how Secretariat absolutely broke the will of Sham in this race.
He's not even blowing hard. Incredible. Thank you so much for posting this, a horse for the history books. One person couldn't understand what he saw. Horse from Heaven. Thank you to Team Secretariat.
I was 15 and I remembering thinking as I watched Secretariat pull away and Chic Anderson utter maybe one of the most famous race calls ever " he is moving like a tremendous machine". I knew I was watching something special and that I would never see anything like it again. I just wished that I would have gone by the farm to see him before he died.
