  • Welcome to my new Playlist - La Femme Nikita Music Highlights
Two songs, an iconic moment, and a spoiler.
(I just realised the microphone picked up the loud birds outside.)
Nikita’s childhood friend, Julie, just happens to be in the right place at the right time to see Nikita going into a pool hall/bar. As we know from episode 1, Nikita has now been recruited and trained in Section One, and her old self no longer exists. To the outside world, Nikita is buried in row 8, plot 30. Anyone from her past life is instantly in danger if they happen to cross paths. Nikita does her best to hide and protect Julie, but is ‘Julie’ really who she says she is?
There is a lot more going on in the episode than that of course, so you will need to watch the full episode to find out more.

La Femme Nikita was a television series that was adapted from the original French movie. The series was filmed in Canada and it ran from January 1997 to March 2001. The 96 episode series was focused on a secret service type organisation called Section One. The show was exciting, action-packed, had an impossible love story, and featured some excellent music.
The regular cast members were Peta Wilson (Nikita), Roy Dupuis (Michael), Alberta Watson (Madeline), Eugene Robert Glazer (Operations), Don Francks (Walter), and Matthew Ferguson (Birkhoff). There were also a number of other recurring characters. If you are interested in more information you can find the cast and guests listed at this Wikipedia page.

    Yay! Another fun video review.
In my experience there really aren’t that many music videos for a lot of the music featured on the show. Off the top of my head I know about the Hooverphonic songs from season 3, “Goreki”, “Release” by Afro Celt Sound System, “Life in Mono”, “Angel”, and the Rob Zombie stuff. There’s also a very lo-fi music video of “Slacker Boy Blue”. GusGus’ “Gun” and Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up” have live performances.
My head canon with Nikita’s upbringing is that Nikita’s mother was sort of a free spirited Canadian in her early days who decided to travel because she wanted more than just a dull life at home. She was in Australia when she met Mr. Jones and perhaps didn’t know she was pregnant when he left. She gave birth in Australia and then spent the first few formative years of Nikita’s life there before deciding to move her daughter and herself back to North America, where her alcohol problems and issues with money really took hold.
The Huevos Rancheros music worked really well with Nikita strutting down that street with those awesome pigtails. She is so comfortable in that dive bar. Given her background, it wasn’t something she needed to be trained to do. She just blended in with the crowd inside and it’s such a sharp contrast to how “Julie” is interacting with the more seedy space.
“The Last Playboy Interview” sounds very 90s but in the best way. In my opinion, all of season 1 feels very 90s and this song helps contribute to it. I’ll admit that I was never too crazy about the dress up scene. With it being one of the first few episodes they shot, I can forgive it because they were still trying to figure out what the show was. Although I find it quite amusing that Nikita, with some new financial freedom chooses to indulge in fun clothes and wigs, all the things she never really got to experiment with as a kid. Much like her apartment decor in the first season, she’s getting a feel for her personal style.
Marnie McPhail who played Julie was very good. I really liked her performance. There was a great edge to it once she revealed her background as an agent for The Legion. I really wish they had brought her back over Mijovich, who himself was also an interesting character, but who didn’t have the potential mileage of “Julie”. It’s not like the show runners every let a pesky death stop them from bringing back a character or two, lol.
Julie could have been a wonderful foil for Nikita. Nikita has no choice but to be a Section operative, in great contrast to Julie who is a true believer in her cause and who even taunts Nikita for not having any beliefs of her own concerning Section’s role in the world. In her eyes, Nikita is just another mindless Section drone who is being thrown at them like cannon fodder. I only watched “Alias” off and on when it aired because it didn’t grab me like LFN but I certainly remember Gina Torres’ Anna Espinosa’s introduction and how she was used as a counter to Sydney. "Julie" could have had that role.
“Section One isn't quite as invisible as it likes to think and we're very good at what we do.” That line alone really does a lot of heavy lifting for some great world building. ::sigh:: Julie had so much potential. I’m rather bummed that I’ve never come across any fan fiction that used her in that way.
The minute you said that you were going to show an “iconic moment” I instantly knew exactly what you were talking about. There was a very short lived podcast that compared LFN and CW Nikita where one of the podcasters had seen and loved both shows and another had never seen LFN. The minute they got to that rescue scene, the new viewer was instantly on board. He loved comparing Michael to Batman, which is not too far, lol.
I can’t wait for you do “Simone”. I love that episode so much.

Thanks. Love your analysis. I'm a bit lazy and had never really gotten around to learning all the names of the supporting cast, just the main cast.
'Alias' is a show that I never got into, also the remake of LFN. I watched one episode and was enough for me. LFN did kill off and bring back a few different characters. It reminds of 'Days of Our Lives' because it happened in that show too.
'Simone' is a great episode and I'm starting to work on the video for it today. Finding the time to do the videos is the hardest part.
Yes, the iconic scene in 'Friend' is one of my favourites. There are so many iconic scenes throughout the series so I really do have to pick out one per episode. Another iconic scene is the opening of 'Rescue' with Enigma's 'Beyond the Invisible' playing. Magic!
I'm looking forward to doing that episode as well as 'Love' which is one of my all-time favourite episodes.
I need to pick up the pace with these videos. There are so many episodes to get through.

@@NannyShell Alias was more of an on in the background show for me. It just wasn't very memorable, however, I do consider the pilot to be excellent and their wig game was definitely strong. Poor LFN, their wig game was, well...not, lol.
Because the characters and actors were so enjoyable, the soapiness of them bringing back dead characters is something I can forgive.
The opening to 'Rescue' is so iconic. It's so evocative and it definitely stands the test of time. There's a reason why it was the first video I put up on my other channel. I was shocked that I couldn't find it online.
I love the idea of you singling out one iconic scene per episode. That's gonna be a lot of fun! Sadly, I think your Simone video is still blocked.

@@abby82onLJ The wigs are quite sad. lol. I remade the 'Simone' video and uploaded it again and, yes, it was blocked so I took it down. Still not sure whether to try the next one or just give up, or maybe try a different site for those videos.

@@NannyShell It's a bummer about the 'Simone' video. I would have loved to have heard your thoughts, but I guess at a certain point you have to move on or risk losing momentum and/or interest. One of my videos got blocked as well. I keep hoping that I'll find it unblocked one of these days. I have a Vimeo account. If at the end of all my uploads it's still blocked, I'll probably put up over there.

@@abby82onLJ Fingers crossed that your blocked video is eventually unblocked. I didn't leave mine up. I just deleted it again. I've got a vimeo account to so I might try that and see what happens. Daily Motion might be another option but I haven't really looked into it.
