  • Dalmakerran Kirk at Old Dailly dates from before 1200 and its Charter Stones from the feudal lord confirming the ownership of the land are still present inside the ruins. The kirk itself was abandoned in 1696 and it was then used by locals as a burial ground and by the Boyds of Penkill and Trochrig as well as the Dalrymple-Hamiltons of Bargany as their families burial mausoleums.
The Blue Stones may also have been sanctuary stones. The inhibitants of the new church at Dailly tried to remove the charter stones as recorded by Sir Walter Scott but were fought off by the renaining locals. They became trials of strength stones and one is known as 'The Big Blue'.
William Bell Scott has a memorial here. He was a Scottish painter and poet, friend of the Pre-raphaelite painter Dante Rossette and knew John Ruskin well. Although married he had a relationship with Alice Boyd of Penkill Castle and the three spent winters in London and summers at Penkill.

Thanks. It has security fencing around it but someone has left an opening. Worth a look.

    Many thanks for this Roger.
So very grateful to see vision of this wonderful piece of history from the other side of the planet.
John Boyd 3rd of Trochrig left provision in his testament dated 1696, for his son and heir Robert to "to provyd
and cause put a hand some thrugh stone and memorial upon the corps of my two deceased wyves
in the church of Daily at the litle door of the church" to the value of 100 merks. I wonder if the stone survives?

That would be Dailly, not Old Dailly. I may have a list of burials somewhere. I will check for you.

This is very interesting . I am Australian and have been a fairly regular visitor to Dailly ( my wife was a Boyd born in Dailly) and have been to the old kirk a couple of times. She pointed out the stones to me. I think there are some Covenanter graves in the kirkyard as well?
