The doomsday weapon in Dr Strangelove is actually what is termed a salted nuke. Salted nukes are an idea that is even scarier then then the Tsar bomba. The Tsar bomba essentially was just a big explosion and produces remarkably low amounts of fallout for its size. Most of its yield was a "safe" fusion reaction and the fission reaction was one of the most efficient in history leaving little fallout. However, the idea behind a salted nuke is to wrap a bomb in some other element that although it doesn't add to the explosive yield instead it sucks up the extra neutrons and created radioactive isotopes. The original one discussed and the one that was mentioned in Dr Strangelove was a cobalt bomb that produced cobalt-60. Salted nukes are so scary because they produce ridiculous amounts of fallout that is then propelled high into the atmosphere where it will continue to rain fallout for years across an huge area of the planet. It was a real idea that people had that could have killed most life on the planet.

After a lot of thought, I checked the browser history on my sons computer and found he had been viewing pictures of bestiality and seemed to be active in a forum about it. People watch this and are terrified of such an obscenely destructive device, and that is understandable. But they don’t worry, or even know, that one country has changed it’s position recently on the use of nuclear weapons and is planning to develop smaller, more “useable” (staggering, isn’t it?) warheads, which will make their use far more likely. Think about that. A nuclear armed country plans to make smaller nuclear warheads that is thinks are more “useable”.
THAT is what should worry people.

I'm glad this video pays a little tribute to other Soviet scientists. Kurchatov and Sakharov often get all the credit, but without Yuli Khariton's brilliant management style, they would not have been as successful. Also, props to Lev (Levka the Dynamite Man) Altshuler for dramatically simplifying the HE lens casting process. They were able to get it to work in a similar timeframe as Manhattan but on a tenth of the budget. Credit where it's due. The Russian "A Kalyenki" engineering method produces good results. I realize they had espionage materials, but only Kurchatov knew that. He used it as a fact checker and made his own scientists learn the material the hard way. Call it cheating, but in this regard, it really wasn't. It's not like they were a bunch of kids using their TI 89's to solve algebraic functions they don't understand. They learned it through trial and error. They didn't even know Kurchatov has this material.

It follows up on the topic of the threat of nuclear anihilation and is very interesting (and concerning) to watch. i think its also in this video, where Toon talks about the threat of how two of the smaller nuclear armed nations like india and pakistan could plunge the planet into a nuclear winter, even if they would just empty their arsenal in a relatively confined area. we as upcoming generation of workers, bureaucrats and politicians have to take a clear stand to this and make sure that never in the future of man a nuclear weapon is ever again used against another human being or country.

Thankfully it's too impractical to use. Unless you build it and deliver it by truck instead of a airplane or icbm. Or boat. Ever see the documentary about what if DC was hit by a terrorist attack with a nuke? they built one state side and used a truck to deliver the bomb. But of course you'd probably need a big truck.

Tsar Bomba was 27 tons. My truck can legally haul 22.5 tons. Illegally, I'm sure stuffing an extra 9000 pounds in there wouldn't be an issue. I don't know that it'd fit in the trailer though...at most an 8 foot diameter by 52 foot long device would fit, anything bigger and you'd have to stick it on a flatbed.

The real question I've always had about this is what did they expect to gain by doing it? Everyone knew that the USSR was a military superpower with a very effective nuclear capability. Everybody knew that the USSR had world class scientists; it was one of the few things the regime could legitimately be proud of. What did they think this was going to change now that they had produced this giant nuclear white elephant? For the tremendous expense just in terms of fissile material and nylon it seems like an incredibly wasteful venture. More that I think about it the more it seems like part of some kind of cartoon parody than real life.

Something interesting to add to the Soviet Atomic weapons projects is they got a relative Head Start links to the KGB being able to infiltrate nearly every level of the Manhattan Project at the time the US's most secretive project.
That goes to prove how effective the KGB was and then how capable the Soviet scientists were because once they got the basics they Advanced rapidly and caught up to the US, and in some regards surpassed them in many factors of nuclear weaponry.

Note that Dr. Sakharov was exiled to a resort town. It was a very stern warning: "This is not very bad. Stop saying things we do not like or next time it will be very bad."
He was important enough that quite uncharacteristically they took the ramifications of just summarily exiling him to the gulags into account and only gave him a warning. This was a privilege afforded to very few.

Cool info: The zar bomba was the cleanest nuke ever deployed. Because of the 3rd stage removed, there was just a tiny amount of fallout.
Removing the 3rd stage was a good decision, not only because of the tiny fallout. It would also not have made sense, because the bigger the blast, the more energy just goes up into the sky (exponentially. Because of the decreasing density of the athmosphere).

The third stage was a fission one, not fusion one (that's why it was supposed to be made of uranium in the 100 megaton version).
It's often said that the fission bomb inside a thermonuclear weapon is merely it's "detonator" (like a blastcap for regular explosives) but that is a misconception: It's true that the first fission stage is what sets off the second fusion one, but in the end the majority of the energy released by the explosion actually comes from the fission. While the fusion reaction adds its punch to the explosion its main purpose is actually increase the efficiency of fission by releasing a lot of neutrons that make the vast majority of fission fuel undergo reaction instead of only a tiny fraction of it.
So if the fission stage is the "detonator" of the fusion one then the fusion is the "catalyst" of the first (and in case of the 100MT Tsar Bomb also third) fission stage.

In the classic 1965 card game _Nuclear War,_ there is one and only one 100-megaton bomb card in the deck. If it's played and the dice roll for the attack outcome comes up "triple yield" (95-99 on a percentile roll), all life on Earth is wiped out and the game immediately ends with no winner.
