My method of creating the peaks and valleys, makes the best and easiest moss stitch ripple for 3 reasons.
1. The fabric is firm, dense and reversible.
2. The decrease in the valley appears identical to the increase at the peak. This allows the ripple to change direction in an even and continuous flow.
3. Most importantly, you get into the rhythm of the stitch pattern faster. Since, the Vs at the peaks and valleys are easy to identify, it’s really hard to make a mistake! This is especially important for beginners.
The pattern reveals several variations and provides their multiples. So... dive right in and crochet crochet any effect you want! Feed your crochet obsession with the Moss Stitch Ripple!

Thank you so much for your detailed descriptions of what is actually happening as you crochet these various stitches! It helps me so much to hear that we are doing a decrease, half double crochet etc and you tell us why we are making those stitches! So helpful! I purchased the pattern and I am forever grateful!
Thank you for your kind comments! I really do try to explain why we do something so that we can all learn and grow in our art! Sometimes it makes me think twice about how I crochet too!
Thank you for providing this wonderful tutorial. I found it thorough but not repetitive. By far one of the better instructors on RUclips!
Glad it was helpful!
This is such a clear and well explained tutorial. I’ve been crocheting along with it. It’s amazing 🤩 thank you so much for putting so much effort into this 😊
You make me feel so good! I'm glad it was helpful and I love the idea you crocheted along! Thank you!
Oh I wish I had found you first! I’ve tried several others and just didn’t get it! Yours is not only beautiful but perfectly explained. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Oh my goodness, I just happened to stumble upon you anf your videos. The Moss Stitch as I was doing just wasn't doing much for me fun wise as I started two different Temperature Blankets. You've made it so interesting, clear and fun. Thank you! I look forward to watching more of your videos! What a delight to listen to you. I've never done twisted yarns and have been crocheting nearly 60yrs.
Oh thank you! Please share my channel with your friends. And let me know if you want to see something in particular!
Love your teachings, clear, concise!! And...no twisting!!! Ty!!
Thank you so much!
I am so glad I found your tutorial. I love your instructions. Keep up the great tutorials.
Thank you, thank you for this video! I was trying to figure out the decrease and didn't quite get it but your video is great to explain this! I want to do a moss stitch crocheted mitered square block and your decrease instruction is what I needed! Thanks again and my best wishes to you!
Thank you for watching! I developed this technique just because it is so much more attractive and easier to stay on course! Thank you for acknowledging my work!
I can't begin to thank you enough for sharing this pattern! It's incredibly easy. I love ripples and have started many times over the years, but I've always wound up losing count of stitches and frogging until I gave up in frustration. Not so with your pattern! Instead of changing colors I'm using self striping yarn and am nearly finished with an afghan. Thank you so very much!
Great job! Please share my channel with your friends!
Beautiful!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I absolutely love this method.
Me too! Glad you enjoyed it! Please share it with your friends!
Thank you so much

Very good tutorial. Subscribed!
Thank you! And I have a special spring surprize coming soon for all the Moss Stitch lovers!
I just completed a blanket for my son using your pattern. Very easy to follow your directions. But I was wondering if you could give me advice on creating a border. I’m trying to figure out a way to crochet the valleys to make a rectangle to then crochet the border. Thank you.
Interesting idea! Let me give it a little thought. It should be relatively easy. Be back to you soon!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for giving me this great idea! I did a short video and also in the description provided a link for the written pattern. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/E3qz9xDMOXA/видео.html
Hope it answers your questions!
Love this!
It really is a fascinating stitch pattern! I've got so many ideas on ways to use it! Coming soon!
Could you start with a solid sc row with peaks and valleys and then start the moss stitch in the second row? This is a wonderful pattern. Thanks.
Yes, that is an option. Currently, I'm working on a new video that really show a great way to begin and end the moss stitch ripple. Coming soon!
Hi. I love this pattern and you are a great teacher with very clear instructions. Can you help me please? I have tried the 1st row a few times now and I keep ending up with just 2 stitches instead of 3. I crochet along with your video, I double check that I've chained 56 (19+19+18). Thankyou :)
Thank you for following along and for your attention to detail! I forgot to count the turning chain! It should be stated as a multiple of 19 plus 19. And I state it this way because you need 19 for each peak desired and then 19 so the pattern begins and ends in a valley on each side. If you send me your email at mary@twistedyarns.com I will send you the written pattern!
Have you found any solution to the holes in the first row where you skip a chain?
The holes created by skipping the chains is part of the Moss stitch pattern. They are supposed to be there just like every row of the Moss stitch. However if you do not want them on the edge row then I would suggest working a row of sc for the first row but making sure to work the peak and valleys too. If you object to the hole at the tip of the valley, simply pull up a loop in all 4 chains at the tip then yo and pull thru all 5 loops on hook. The hole at the peak is needed as is. But only do this on the very 1st row. To make the last row match, at the points of the peaks work 4 sc to fill in.
I’m hoping this is easier to understand than the original one. I am having a very hard time trying to understand all the sc sk 1, ch, 3 times, etc…
Once you establish the first row with the correct number of sts, everything else falls into place. Let me know if you have additional questions
Yes I am working on a practice piece and it is becoming a lot easier to identify the stitches. I want to make a queen sized blanket using this pattern. Can you tell me how any chains I need to do for my foundation? A queen size bed is 80” L x 60” W but I would like a drape of about 6” on each side.
@@carmendriggs1965 in case it helps you estimate, I just started a baby afghan using this Moss Stitch Ripple pattern (using multiples of 19). I am using worsted weight yarn with an H hook. 10 peaks makes my afghan about 36 inches wide. The formula I used for 10 peaks was 9 multiples of 19 plus 18, or 189 starting chains. It looks like you want a bed cover that is double the width of mine, so plan on at least 20 peaks, maybe even 22 to account for the curve of the drape over the side edges of the bed. If my math is correct, for 22 peaks, I'd try 21 multiples of 19 plus 18. (Honestly, the multiples of 19+19 always leaves me with an extra chain). So for 22 peaks, I would chain (21x19)+18=417. And however you figure it, if you do wind up with any extra starting chains, you can just pick them out. BTW, I LOVE THIS PATTERN AND THE VIDEO WAS A GREAT HELP!!!!
I am having a very hard time with “slopes”. Peaks are good but when completing the slopes I end up with 4 ch sp to do the 3 sc on the side. I must’ve done something wrong on row 1 😩
How's it going?
What are you doing in after that last peak? You completely skip over it until we’re at the last 3 stitches. I keep getting lost on the end. I start with 56 chains like you and follow the video along with you and I still don’t know what I’m doing at the end of the chain.
Oh no! I will look into it. If you want to contact me for specifics my email is Mary@twistedyarns.com! I will be happy to answer your specifc questions!
how do i calculate if i want it to be one stitch smaller ...two in between the peaks and valleys..ty
All the calculations for this adjustment are in the written pattern. The link for the companion pattern is in the video description below. Make sure to use the coupon code for tubers to get a free copy!
For 2 moss sts on each slope, chain a multiple of 15 for each peak desired plus 15 so the pattern begins and ends in a valley. Hope this helps.
@@TwistedYarns thank you so much..I would have been happy to pay for the pattern but even with paypal they want all my info and I dont do that so sorry. Love the tutorial
I can not find the pattern on the link given. Does anyone have the written pattern?

Thank you so much I really enjoy this but my valleys look awful I will keep trying wish me luck
Try working on your tension at the valleys in particular. Practice pulling up even loops in each of the stitches and then yo and pull thru all 3 loops. Alternatively, try to make the sc2tog a little bit tighter.
Thank you , been working on it
I’m having trouble on the ends. Could you help show that separately? Thanks! 2:29
Are you having trouble on the ends of the first foundation row or are you having trouble on the ends of the pattern row? Could you be more specific? Is it the counts or the stitches?
@@TwistedYarns The end of pattern row. Your tutorial is great, I just got mine wrong. Don’t worry, I’ll get it. Thanks.

Is it possible to make a mitered moss stitch baby blanket which would eliminate my obvious seams on the square one I just completed? Thanks, Lois
Do you mean a square moss stitch? If so watch my video How to Crochet the Moss Stitch Square-Untwisted at ruclips.net/video/20z-LV0MgZk/видео.html
If you want a rectangle, watch my video How to Crochet the Moss Stitch Rectangle- Untwisted. Both require no seams and the corners are sharp.
If I misunderstood the question, let me know. Thanks and Happy Crocheting!

I love your moss ripple pattern and am looking forward to your video with an easy start and finish for the ripple. I made a square moss blanket using your video but my joins are pretty obvious so I was hoping there was a video somewhere for possibly joining in the corner. I did start a mitered corner moss stitch so I'm only working on 2 sides to make the square so there are no joins but my sense of "balance" prefers the square starting from the middle rather than from one corner. Thanks for all that you share. Lois
@@TwistedYarns I guess I was asking if there was a less obvious way to join on the square moss stitch blanket. This popped up on my RUclips for a corner join. I'm thinking a corner join is a little less obvious, at least for me. (ruclips.net/video/P9g_qu7_lBI/видео.html) I did try to find a way to privately send you a link but, since I couldn't even on your website, I have sent this here. Thanks again for all your videos and patterns.
Why does mine curl?
When and how is it curling? After thr first row? If so, your foundation chain may be too tight.
Your written pattern says multiples of 19 + 19. Meanwhile here you say 19 + 18…
Thanks for letting me know. The written pattern is correct. Once a video is published it cannot be corrected.
Thank you
@@carmendriggs1965 HI- I will calculate the number but just confirm that you are using worsted weight yarn and an H hook. That way I can give you a pretty good number based on typical gauge. Awaiting your answer!
@carmendriggs1965 - I just started a project yesterday and had the same confusion. When I used multiples of 19 plus 19, I had one extra chain left over. I wound up using a starting chain of multiples of 19 + 18. To make 10 peaks, I chained 9 multiples of 19 plus 18. So, (9x19)+18=189...and that worked out perfectly for me. (BTW, 10 peaks with an H hook and worsted weight yarn turned out to be about 36" wide, in case that info is useful to anyone.)
@@TwistedYarnsyes. I decided to make it a queen size bedspread so I made a foundation chain of 360 and it worked out perfectly. Thanks
