California palm (desert fan palm) is actually the only palm tree originating from California. All others are from other parts of the world and most are actually shipped there and planted. They have done a HUGE clean up of that muscle beach area. It used to be totally over run with transients and their tents but somebody finally figured out it was wrong to let that happen and kill the local economy! Go figure. So great timing on you visit or you would have just turned around.

We've been to Venice when it was in such a condition. I'm surprised Santa Monica would let it get to that point, that's a shame.
