After searching Google this answer is found for those square slots in sequence - the craftsmen of old employed a unique method to accurately split the rocks. Initially, a sequence of holes (a few inches in depth) is created in a straight line at the desired cutting point. Subsequently, bamboo sticks are inserted into these holes and water is poured over them. As the bamboo absorbs the water, it swells and fractures the stone. The majority of the stone fragments will exhibit these distinctive marks along the edges.
