Also, the guide doesn't really touch on this, but Seulgi and Wendy do collabs with outside artists. One you might be interested in is Wendy's collab with John Legend on a song called "Written in the Stars". There's also an music video of it if you want to check it out
In Seulgi's case with the seven years thing is that she entered the company when they were preparing to debut a new girl group team already (and she was too young), so basically it was a matter of waiting until they were ready to debut a new group (which is the case with most companies) and see if she was ready. The thing was that knowing when that was going to happen was not something she could do, she just knew it would come eventually and had to keep holding until it happened. Usually trainees will leave to a different company or just give up on their dream completely if a long time passes by, so she was resilient to the end but she did say she felt like giving up multiple times, luckily she didn't!
A little bit of misinformation about Wendy’s accident. She was instructed to walk down a pitch black corridor that lead to a set of stairs and then down to the stage. They gave her a flashlight and said told her to go to the stage to prepare for the rehearsal. Only they had not set up the stairs. The corridor just ended with a 8-10 ft drop to the stage. She also broke the side of her face so she did have some reconstructive surgery.
best way to desbribe the ranking of positions is that it is Main>Lead>Sub so main is the MAIN MAIN they take the majority of that position. so if you're a main vocalist you take the most in line distribution, your voice tends to be pushed more in harmonies, and you tend to take more of the killing parts. so the same in dancing- more stage time, tend to be the center of choreos, and tend to be the ones with dance solos or leading the killing part lead is still a main position but not as much as main obviously. in some groups you can see a bigger gap between main and lead but with red velvet its very hard to see a difference between any of the 5 girls. sub is the 'occasional' surprise part, where they have less line distribution or center dance time as the others when filling this position. ACE is like the term triple threat! Whether you consider it Singer, Dancer, Rapper. or Singer, Dancer, Actor. or Singer, Dancer, Artist. or any combination you can think of in K-pop. just the one who tends to excel greatly at their positions and are just able to look good doing anything. She said here that Seulgi is considered the ACE of RV but i have seen so many polls about that topic where different members land on top. but I will say with how many newer idols in the industry talk so highly of Seulgi and some idols even mentioning her as a role model for who they would want to be like, she certainly fits an ace standard!
@@HansReactsNYC Definitely! I'm proud to own their physical album, and their Over (When We Said Goodbye) video still gets played regulary in my household ♥
Main and lead is simply about the skill, it's the strongest to least strong vocalist/dancer/rapper wtv, some might tell you it's about line distribution but that's not always the case, the main vocalist doesn't always have the most lines, but the main vocalist is always the strongest most skilled vocalist in the group. So basically: Main = the best Lead = the second best Everyone else = usually given a a sub position like "sub vocalist" or just "vocalist" There can be more than one main or lead, but it's usually in big groups (more than 7 members)
About her accident: it was during a rehearsal for a year-end stage and the network failed to properly light the stairway leading up from the floor up to the stage. Wendy was ascending the stairs in the dark and basically walked off into the air and fell the equivalent of two stories high. After the hospital period, she spent a lot of 2020 in physio. There was a lot of question whether she would return and if she would still be able to perform, given the severity of her injuries. It was a dark period for ReVeLuvs.
@@mahalleinir773 Fair enough. The different reports on her fall stated it was 8-10 feet (2.5 metres in some reports), which is the height of a room for most buildings; so if you're standing that high, it's the equivalent to standing on the floor above you. At 6 metres, that would be standing on the roof of the 2nd storey (aka the 3rd floor).
Wendy is not an human, she was an angel. Im still remember on that accident that make my heart broken in 2019. They should promoted their psycho. Lets react their wish you hell live performance❤
seulgi's period training along other trainees comes with other factors usually companies, and the strongest ones take a gap of 4-5 years to debut a new group, at the time before Red Velvet's debut SM had 6 groups active (girls generation, f(x), EXO, Shinee, etc) and some more artists so obiously preparations for a new groups take a lot of invertions, possible members, invert in trainees programs (vocal lessons, dancing, rap, modeling, etc etc).
Nice reaction, and you're asking some good questions along the way. Main, Lead, Sub (this is the k-pop industry "order") can be applied to singing, dance, rap. There are other "positions" like leader, center, visual ... the company determines the position. I think you were speaking over the part that explained about Wendy's accident. She fell from a platform due company negligence, during rehearsal. She suffered very serious injuries (pelvis, wrist) and face---broken cheekbone. I read she was hospitalized for two months and then recuperated with rehab before performing again after about a year. I think she is courageous and resilient to say the least. An amazing singer who loves her craft and performing for an audience. I hope to see RV in person someday. 💓💛💙💚💜 Looking forward to part 3.
Yeah its not necessarily the norm for trainees to train for 7 years because they normally either wash out or debut after 2-3 years (a more norm training period) but it can happen depending on the companies' debut plans and the trainee's determination. Twice's jihyo trained for 10 yrs and snsd hyo and nmixx's lily both trained for about 7 years
traditionally, the main vocalist is the one with the larger range and really sings those high notes/ad-libs. they tend to be better technically than lead vocalists. lead vocalists traditionally would have either the most lines or the same about of lines as the main vocal, but they don't necessarily have the ability to hit those high notes like the main vocal. i think though the lines are more blurry when it comes to SM groups because their standard for vocalists it crazy. they easily have 2-3 main vocals in some groups but because of official positions only 1 may be considered the main vocal. it's been said for years though that if seulgi was part of any other idol group she would be a main vocal and i would have to agree. i think the definition of it has changed though, but i'm using what was traditionally the meaning when it comes to 2nd gen and early 3rd gen kpop groups
Regarding English speaking, behind Wendy, the next most proficient would be Katie Kim (Yeri). She was studying English during covid. Probably would not call her fluent though. The other 3, not proficient at all.
6 to 7 years of training is normal training period back then but there was a few idols that trained for 10 to 12 years, I think it was the leader of twice ( I'm not sure but I think it was roughly 10 years). Nowadays, the training period is around 2 years to 3 months of training because K-pop companies have more money to debut groups since K-pop has been globalized. Back then, K-pop wasn't well known internationally, hence why they didn't have mu h finance to debut groups.
Wendy is 100% a dork and the most chaotic loud person in RV :D ... She's essentially the moodmaker of the group and you can feel it when she's kinda absent in some content. She always says singing and performing on a stage is the happiest place for her and singing is everything to her. That's why she doesn't even wanna try acting (closest was the Rebecca musical she did in 2023)
Trainee length used to be longer because trainees back then weren't trained prior to joining and basically passed their audition based on natural talent. Whereas nowadays, trainee length is shorter because kids are taking music and dancing lessons before their audtion. If you think about it, the 5-7 years isn't very long for a career. Look at sports or even professional dancers. Normally, you do youth sports or youth dancing and go all the way up to high school, college, and pro.
Seulgi is skilled at both singing and dancing. And this made her an Ace of Red Velvet. The reason of she is lead but not main vocalist is that Wendy is so fking strong. Seulgi can easily be a main vocalist in other groups. And this is also why Red Velvet’s Vocal is so damn good.
yeah very extensive stuff. really appreciate you really trying to understand the members. Im a Wendy ult bias but Seulgi's Album is probably the best solo artist album in kpop let alone RV.
Basically it goes like this... Main > Lead > Sub. And yes, 7 years is an unusually long training period. Joy and Wendy trained for only 2 years, but they were considered on the shorter side. The thing with SM is that they have a reputation for having the best-trained Idols in the business. They don't debut someone before they are ready to under any circumstances. And yeah, if you looked up the word "extra" in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Wendy.

Yes...the John Legend collab is a gem and so many people who even know both of them don't even know it exists. A must hear.
Also Vente Paca with Ricky Martin
