He plays technical death metal. If you listen to techdeath bands like Archspire and Viraemia you will notice that this kind of bass playing perfectly suits the band.

Jaco played in the late 70s that was almost 50 years ago, I don't hate old music but I'm tired of hearing the same old 60s and 70s stuff. I'd even like to hear more stuff from the 50s and earlier but the same old boomer music gets all the attention
