      @Swisspaynie 6 лет назад

      bluwng no, you’re the idiot because you wrote ‘your’ again haha. I’d love to see how stupid you are in real life. Do you even play guitar? Bet you’re garbage (not ‘your’ - but you won’t know the difference).

    • @MarkDyson
      @MarkDyson 6 лет назад

      Wow, bluwng. Okay. You don't bother to check the spelling of your content before you submit it and, instead of owning your carelessness, you make excuses. You jump to unsupported conclusions about people you don't even know. You resort to immature name-calling. That pretty much sums up the quality of your so-called opinions. I don't even need to point out how lame your behavior is in this thread, the garbage takes itself out every time you post and, in doing so, you make my case for me. Quite convenient. Please note that I have scrupulously avoided attacking you directly, only your "contribution" to this thread. Might want to look up "ad hominem."

    "i'll reserve judgement on the guitar until i can actually get my hands on one and play it". That's what most people should do these days.

    • @edandre2626
      @edandre2626 6 лет назад +2

      Why? Because, for me, the way a guitar feels and the way it sounds is more important than the way it looks. If a guitar matches my wishes, i don't care if it looks like a strat copy or not. (have a look at some Suhr, some ESP, the Ibanez AZ serie....can you call them just strat clones?) BTW, if i'm searching for that typical strat sound, sure i'll buy the real one. But i bet that's what John Mayer will do too. So if a well-renowned guitar player like John asked PRS to create this signature model, imho it's to create something different than a simple strat clone. Part of that, is the silver sky ugly or not....well it's pure matter of taste.

    • @edandre2626
      @edandre2626 6 лет назад

      I understand your point of view Jason; but for me, the guitar is not so ugly....of course it's far from beeing the best looking PRS, but...it's John Mayer's choice to make it look like a strat.

      Interesting observations. I'd seek out some samples but I fear RUclips compression would kill the value of any related videos. I used Bill Lawrence and Jim Wagner pickups in my last two custom Strat-alike builds and they sound pretty damned good to my personal preference but I'm curious what Mayer and PRS did with this design. Probably won't buy one, I like my own builds well enough I'm not in the market, but I do love learning more about how folks add to the body of gear available.

  • @seandcannon
    @seandcannon 6 лет назад +15

    I love your comparison & observation of the similar "if you dont't agree with me you're evil!" mentality of people on gear forums and how the political climate is right now, me personally, if it sounds good & plays good & is built well, who cares who builds it. I'm on the fence about the headstock though, I'm sure I could get used to it & it's probibly more stable with it's tuning but I'm just used to the traditional "inline six" headstock, I do like the PRS touches to the body, just enough to let you know it's a PRS. People are weird, the last time the world had this attitude about others opinions & beliefs, the Holy Wars and Spanish Inquisition happened. An overdeveloped need to be right hinders the ability to be tolerent & civil to others, you are correct, people just need to chill.

    I was blown away with what I've viewed of this guitar. Now for me, being a former full time drummer with a serious love for playing guitar... I've gotten a ton of advice,opinions and thoughts from tons of serious players in just about every style of music out there... As well as attempting myself to customize my own guitars to get what I want out of them...
    This guitar seems to have just about every little "negative" nuance of a strat style guitar looked at, improved upon with the touch of a true refinement! I love strats and strat style guitars with the best of them... I would love to play one of these JM models.
    BTW, fantastic video and observation of the online guitar community... I couldn't have said it better. Great job. Can wait to see more info, insight and comparisons of this guitar.

    Great video! Considering the CE model is priced for $2,000, the Silver Sky is priced right. PRS will sell a ton of these and yes, this is not their first stratocaster style guitar. The EG and one of the signature models are similar in style. I am going to hold off for now but one will be in my collection. I need a swamp ash special and a 2009 Ted McCarty single cut to match my double cut.

    Great points, well made. The thrust of the "argument" put forward, in many cases, seems to go like this...
    "A person I do not know has a commercial relationship with a company I have no connection with. Together they have produced a product that I would not buy, because it looks a lot like one made by a different company (that this person used to have a relationship with). Rhett, I liked your impartial treating of this topic. Great video! The Silver Sky looks like a Strat, but it is a PRS. I have 2 American Strats, and a Mexican made Strat, and all 3 needed modifications to make them very good guitars. The 1st time I played my American Standard at band practice, my bandmates told me not to bring that guitar back. After 3 sets of pickups, locking tuners, GraphTech nut and saddle replacements, PRS strap buttons, new caps and pots, and modded wiring, it is now a great guitar. I also had a Gibson Les Paul that came from the factory needing the fret ends dressed. I have a PRS 408, an NF3, and an S2 Custom 24. All 3 PRS guitars came perfect from the factory. No mods needed and they all play and sound great. So, without touching the Silver Sky, I feel confident it will be awesome from the factory. It may look like a strat, but it is not a Fender.
    The Silver Sky was built for John Mayer and modeled after his '63 and '64 strats. The neck curve is a combination of the '63 and '64 necks, and the fretboard radius is 7.25". The bone nut and headstock were John Mayer's choices. The point was to make a guitar John would feel comfortable playing, without having to relearn how to play a new guitar. If the public likes the guitar as well, great! I don't like the idea of a 7.25" fretboard radius and the bone nut instead of the PRS synthetic nut. However, I do want to give this guitar a test drive once it hits the stores. The advance hatred is unfair and senseless.

    • @scottmatheson2390
      @scottmatheson2390 6 лет назад

      " I don't like the idea of a 7.25" fretboard radius" I was surprised about that and wondered why he didn't at least go with a compound radius. The vintage 7.25" radius is a very comfortable fit for me but has never facilitated bends.
      I'll bet you dollars to donuts however that the Silver Sky is (somehow) very bend friendly.The nut has never been an issue for me. As long as strings don't catch or pinch out I'm a happy camper.

    • @randykelsoe7191
      @randykelsoe7191 6 лет назад

      The fretboard radius and bone nut are to make John Mayer happy. I like the idea of the compound radius. That would have been nice. I am sure Rene Martinez will keep the bone nut well lubricated for John so it won't stick.

    • @shadowscott9910
      @shadowscott9910 6 лет назад +5

      I agree with you sir. I should say because people confuse “every one gets to have an opinion” with this “ my opinion matters”. Peoples INFORMED opinions matter. One’s knee jerk opinion doesn’t even matter enough to them to THINK about it. It comes from the monkey mind not the human mind. The right to have a valid opinion presupposes one has accepted the responsibility to have contemplated it.
      Yeah and this is pretty much a completely subjective subject. Hah.
      I kinda like the looks.
      It’s too expensive for me.
      If I play it and my hands like it it is a “good” guitar. That is sadly too expensive for me. If I don’t that is sort of a relief.
      I think John Mayer is talented as hell and I think he probably worked very hard to get that way. His hands look like spiders to me... I mean that thumb over damn.
      Everything I have seen of John Mayer has been live clips of him jamming and his radio tunes. My first thought is this the same guy? And then you look at the guitar work on the radio tunes and then his live jamming. Without even bringing “like” into the equation that man is good.
      The very few PRS I have tried have felt fat to my hands. Been looking for a strat and a LP because my eyes like them. Haven’t been able to find one my hands like.
      So that took a lot longer than “that sucks” or “totally awesome”.
      I hope the internet grows up before it kills us all.

    I've owned several PRS' over the years. I've never been a big fan of them, and except for the current one I have, I wasn't able to bond with any of them to keep them longer than 6 months, the one Custom 24 I got rid of in under a month. It wasn't really a fault of PRS, it's just 24 fret guitars I dont like the timber of the neck pickup on 24 fret guitars.
    As to the other models; I don't like t the pickups that PRS make. It's not a big deal, usually I end up replacing pickups anyway. I think the reason I don't love them is a combination of the 25" scale, and the fact that they feel and look too much like a museum piece, so I'm not able to let myself beat on them like I do with Fender and Gibson's.
    Ironically, the one that I do like and have owned for a couple years is a 15+ year old CE22. the one I have is the mahogany body/carved Maple top with a bolt on Maple neck. Most dismiss them as a "poor-man's" custom 22/24. That very well may be true for many who own them, it's not in my case. I bought the CE 22 BECAUSE it has a maple neck (I've been repairing guitars for over a decade, and while I DO acknowledge the difference that small things do to tone, such as; yes, I do find that rosewood and maple fretboards affect to tone to a degree, but I don't think the fact the CE'S neck being bolt on has much affect, it's the Maple that does).
    I play 2 Strats, a Les Paul, ES345&339. A time came when I decided I needed a tremolo equipped humbucker guitar with a more modern sound (the Gibsons I have all have either PAFs, or sightly overwound PAFs, and the Fenders have vintage type single coils).
    While PRS are thought of as a guitar that resides between a Fender and a Gibson, it definitely leans more Gibson. Though I hadn't had one cross my bench in a couple years, I remembered having a couple CE22 & 24's having a tone that I was looking for.
    I originally put a set of Fralin High Outputs in it. Normally I don't like HO pickups at all. While at times I play with high gain, I normally play clean to classic rock level of gain. I find high Outputs to be too compressed and lack the touch sensitivity that lower output pickups do. The shop I worked at for a while was a Fralin distributor so I had experience with them. I liked the HO because to me, while pickups like a Super-Distortion to me are akin to turning up the gain on an amp, the Fralins were more like turning up the master volume. They were more open sounding, the volume control on the guitar is much more useable and (what was the deciding factor in putting them in) when you split the coil, you're actually left with a full output single coil, actually a hotter output single coil.
    I wanted to be able to take that with me when I didn't want to bring more than 1 guitar, and have it be close enough to cover a couple guitars, that "Jack of all trades, master of none" things. Normally I don't use split coils is because I find split PAFs to just be weak and anemic, so I'll do a series/parallel switch.
    Anyways, while I like the CE22, I do find this JM PRS to be completely unnecessary. I don't HATE it, I just don't really like it. It sort of has whole "single white female" thing going with it. It looks SO MUCH like it's trying to be a Strat, that if I saw anyone else but Mayer playing it, the first thought I would have is "why don't you just get the Strat?!"
    The 7 1/4" radius is absurd, and IMO will be why it won't do well sales wise. They may sell a bunch for the first couple years, but that round fretboard will quickly become it's Achilles heel. I agree with you, why putting a 7 1/4" radius on a signature guitar for a player that's known for blues is beyond me. I question whether HE will actually use that radius. I had a couple Fenders with those vintage radius' and I hated it. Not only does it make playing across the fretboard less fluid (you're always going up and down a hill), and have notes fret-out when bending notes, but they feel like you're playing on a broomstick. I had both a rosewood '62 AVRI and a '57 AVRI with a maple board. The '62 I ended up refretting it myself and bringing the fretboard down to a 12". The Maple I didn't want to sand down the fretboard, so I refretted it with Jumbo wire and re-radiusing the frets themselves to 11".
    I've worked on literally hundreds if not thousands of Strats over the years. I find the Eric Johnson Strat to be one of the, if not THE, best designed and built production non-Custom Shop Strats that Fender make. You don't have to like Eric Johnson to love the guitar. On this however, I feel like you probably have to be into John Mayer to get into this.
    As a side note, and this is not hating on John Mayer at all, I think he's a really good guitarist, but I found the John Mayer Strat to be one of the models of Strats I like the least. They seemed to come in for repairs or with problems more than any other signature model, including MIM. There were a few other luthiers who referred to it as a +$1000 MIM Strat.

    Being strongly opinionated bordering political tribalism has become a virtue these days. I think you've nailed it with your commentary. Above all, this is a *John Mayer's signature* guitar, so it's been designed to serve the needs of his, first and foremost.
    Stylistically, and at first glance, it appears to be a hurriedly put together mishmash of good ideas. I bet that it plays wonderfully, though; with the price point being fairly reasonable, IMHO, PRS will sell a lot of those.
    Thanks!
    EDIT: minor typing & stylistic corrections.

They've come a long way, but the quality has only improved. I agree that brand "diversity" arguments are stupid. Thank you for your honesty which seems to be so missing these days. The fact that people are making such negative comments about something that they haven't even seen or played is just silly really. I say play it when you can and who knows you might really like it and if you don't then that's okay, no guitar on the planet is good for everybody. I am personally waiting to try one I have heard a few videos and it sounds pretty good. I know it's hard to make a good assessment from a You Tube video but I will try it before I can have a honest opinion. I have a few PRS guitars and they put out a great guitar in my opinion so I don't expect this guitar to be bad and I agree with you Rhett I think PRS will sell a boatload of these. I say try it you might like it and who knows you may even want one, would that be a bad thing, no not if it brings you joy isn't that what guitars are supposed to do.

      Andrew Bass For me, I love John's playing and the price is actually reasonable for an American made guitar. My opinion on PRS as a company, is that they are the most overrated Guitar maker in history. Yeah, they are pretty, but I've never felt a neck I like from them, and their proprietary Trem bridge absorbs too much resonance and makes the tone muddy and robs sustain. I've played $800 vintage Ibanez Artists in good shape I'd take over ANY Paul Reed Smith! Ed Roman ( RIP ) used to have a rant on his website about PRS that goes over other design/value issues with the "birdie guitar" lol

      Jason Allen Do you always feel this strongly about your opinions of guitars that you don't like? You must spend every wakening hour of your life going through RUclips videos posting comments, if that's true. Let's be real here, Jason, why do you honestly care? That's the whole point I'm making. Why do you care this much to the point of where you're literally finding RUclips videos about it and posting comments to emphasize your distaste? And, yes, you are not alone - we get it. What is your mission? What are you trying to accomplish by bashing something other people like? If you don't like it, move the hell on.

    • @andrewbass8144
      @andrewbass8144 6 лет назад

      Jason Allen Well, I'd be lying if I said my main reason isn't the fact that I'm a massive John Mayer fan and am stoked about the guitar. The other part is I just don't understand why people have to bash something that other people are happy about. When you see someone driving a car that you don't like, do you go out of your way to flag them down and let them know their car is a piece of trash in your eyes? The bumper doesn't go well with the body, and don't even get started on the dashboard... It just doesn't make much sense to me. But you're entitled to your opinion.

    Exactly! Play it first, then make a proper analysis. Like you, I'd love to get my hands on one just to try it out, and I'm sure I would love it. I have '13 PRS SE Custom 24 that I got in pristine unplayed condition 3 years ago for $400 and I love that guitar and play it all the time! I have a heavily modified Korean strat, so heavily modified the only thing original on it is the neck minus the tuners. It has a heavy Alder body and a toggle switch for the tele config. I love that guitar too, but it's probably only worth $300-$400. It has great sound, great tone and plays great! So I don't see myself ever dropping $2300, although I agree that is a good price for a John Mayer Signature PRS. I might drop that on a good used player's grade Les Paul one day but not now. Thanks for bringing level headed thinking into the guitar debate. For me it's all about playing, and playing is all about having fun and learning. If we can't do that as guitar players anymore then it has truly become a sad, sad day. You're right, people need to chill out about guitars and just learn and most of all have fun!

    A few ideas from me;
    PRS is great at making set-through neck design.
    John Mayer likes and plays gibson SG on his latest shows. I saw him live playing both silver sky, sg and srat. That guitar has a boldness on mid range and can sound mellow If needed for JM style phrasing.
    JM likes strat and feel of its neck obviously for his style as main instrument.
    Silversky has a midrange boldness with a strat sound, sounds like more of the neck as mids are very forward.
    I think they have nailed the hybrid sound of both , more towards to the strat sound

    good points, Rhett. thanks for your reasonable commentary. i just ordered a PRS 509, so obviously i have nothing against prs. and like you and others have pointed out, there have been strat copies almost as long as there have been strats. its a great design. some of those very well made: suhr, ibanez, anderson, & on & on. this one is..different. at first i thought it was the headstock, but as you showed PRS (and others) have done 3+3 headstocks on bolt-on 3 pup guitars and they work. the difference, i believe, with the silver sky is the pickguard . the combo of the classic strat body & pickguard design with something other that a inline 6 headstock just don't work, aesthetically (for me;). its like a strat neck on a les paul, ....um,,gross! haha! so for me, it just looks weird. i'm sure it plays & sounds great. maybe i'll warm up to it, but i still cant get into mayer playing with the dead either, just doesn't work.

    I like it. Everybody else has made a Strat, so why not PRS? They've apparently made some recommended improvements. JM obviously likes the sound of a bolt on neck and single coil pickups. He also likes the bridge to be flat on the body and has recommended interesting changes to the head stock with better finger access and longer travel from the nut to the machine heads giving easier bends. So bring it on, I love it and will definitely buy one because the price is also absolutely right.

  • @santibanks

    My first guitar was a PRS SE EG. Bought it because I knew I could blindly buy any guitar with a PRS name on it and have a quality instrument. And indeed, I was not disappointed, plays better and is more consistent in its quality to similar priced Squiers and Fenders.
    My "beef" with the Silver Sky is not about that PRS made a strat. They did that with the EG's, DC3, NF3, 503, 515 in the past (though the latter two are actually PRS CE guitars with single coils) and it's nice to see they have one again. It's more the marketing. PRS kind of presents it as something groundbreaking that took 2 years of intensive research while it basically is just a complete clone with only some minor spec changes. The only research is PRS tweaking it till John was statisfied. There is nothing wrong with that, it's just that the marketing feels a bit over the top for what it is. Just a DC3 with different pickups, slightly changed neck, and opaque color. For that I find it a little bit on the pricy side, but for what it's worth, I don't care about a "name" on an instrument. It doesn't add any value whatsoever to me.
    I wouldn't buy one personally, but only because I can find DC3's or EG's for a fraction of the price.

    the main thing i would like to see on future PRS Strat models is PRS finishes,Transparent and wood grain patterns instead of the normal basic colors.

    I completely agree. I love the look, and I hope to try it out to see if it works for me. PRS was intelligent to take a traditional model and make improvements upon it. People are most likely imposing their beliefs as to what is going on behind this collaboration. But all of that aside, it may be a well built guitar and there’s nothing wrong about PRS having a strat copy. In fact, I want to see if Fender could take the Gibson model and improve it. Challenge themselves. It’ll make people angry, but so what.

    Great video, great points, I’m with you 100%. I think it’s great PRS is building an actual strat, they got close with the original EG, then the SAS was the PRS strat for a long while then came the DC3, NF3, 513 and 305 and 509. We all know what Paul can do when he gets inspired by a vintage instrument, he comes up with pure awesomeness like the McCarty 594! Now he’s been looking at vintage ‘63 and ‘64 strats and he’s been dissecting them with his mad scientist mind and John’s constant input for at least two years. Here is the final product. Once again. Leo's Idea of a Stratocaster was having a "partscaster" easy to repair and even change parts. So, Mayer wanted to replicate his 60's guitar which was indeed.... a parstcaster which he luckly - among the whole batch - found as "the best one ever". But we all know that a series guitar like a Fender Strat, even during the 60's was a hit & miss.
    So, PRS replicated a hit and miss partscaster.
    If it were a Strat concept based on all PRS experience, it would rather be considered as a great bet.
    But no, it's inspired on a "1 out of hundreds" that sounded good. Everyone knows that from Fender.

    PRS came to prominence in the era of the super strat. Lots of premium brands (Tyler, Anderson, Valley Arts etc) were simply very tweaked strat styles with a lot of their parts high quality out-sources from the parts bin (Floyd Trems, EMGs etc). Paul Reed Smith got and deserved a lot of kudos for going back to the page and designing a guitar which was really quite original by comparison. Everything from the body of the guitar, the scale length, the proprietary pickups, the early rotary and sweet switches offering a range of useful if not perfect variations on common single coil themes..Even the locking tuners were designed in house.
    PRS over the years then defined and refined a PRS sound and a certain aesthetic and continued to be seen as innovators who while they produced a range of different looking & differently featured models within their ranges those guitars tended not to look exactly like anyone else's guitars either. PRS are perhaps the only brand who have come even close in matching the iconic brands of the 1950s as a viable aspirational alternative on a mass market scale.
    I think PRS are suffering more than other companies building S Style guitars mostly as a result of having carved out a different reputation to a number of other high end companies who have a history of being more derivative. People simply expect something that APPEARS more innovative and unique from PRS. And something that actually looks like a PRS. Kind of victims of their own success.

    Nice video , I also find it interesting . Mayer plays vintage Fender Strats , Of course these came stock with a 7 1/4 " radius, so he is used to that and likes it . PRS is a Premier guitar builder , but I don't see the need for another Strat style guitar .Fender already is making too many copies of the Strat themselves . I think in general , that the public is looking at so many different Strats selling from $99 to$ 9,900 .At some point people should realize that maybe they should be spending the money on guitar lessons instead . I have been playing guitar since 1963 , have been a Strat player since 1968 . At 70 years old I have 2 Strats , 2 Teles , and 2 Jazz Basses .All Fender , plus other assorted brands of different styles .

    I'm sure it's an awesome guitar, that's not the question, it's that PRS has always been about doing its own thing and now just building something that looks like a Fender copy.

    All valid points. I would buy this over a Fender Stratocaster, but I'm not really in the market for this anyway. I think the weird thing with PRS doing this is how hard this goes against Paul's typical philosophy for guitar manufacturing and aesthetic.

    I've not played one but I have played an Eric Johnson Strat and if this is as good as that then fair play to PRS! Mind you, if I were buying I'd just go and get the EJ without a backward glance, the only reason for not doing so would be if you really needed that one more fret :-)

    I am in the same boat... I have a PRS Custom 22 and a JB USA strat already. I am not in the market for a Silver Sky, but I dont have any hate for it. Price is reasonable for what it is.

    I heard a rumor that Fender is coming out with a similar model in 1954 because the Mayer was so groundbreaking and revolutionary.

    Well spoken sir! The Strat is a design classic and for good reason. If PRS think they can make a better one then, why not? Lets face it, everybody else has tried with varying degrees of success. And the price is fair for what you are getting.
