How To Remove Freewheel From Hub With Cut Spokes/Without Rim
HTML-код

- I show how to remove a freewheel from a hub without a rim. The preferable method is to remove the freewheel from the wheel first, then cut the spokes. But stuff happens. Using this method, you can remove the freewheel without damaging either the freewheel or hub. You will need a chainwhip and a solid bench vise. Also an appropriate freewheel remover tool. BTW, I purposely cut this hub from the wheel just for the video.

Very clever !
You're an open-pit gold mine, RJ.
Your videos have helped me tremendously. You are one very clever problem solver. Thank You for being so generous.
Keep them coming man! Great content on your videos. You've taught me so much
Woooow! Dude, you're the man! I would had wrecked the entire hub.
Exactly what I needed. Thanks for the headache saver. Another Campy High Flange successfully added to my collection.
That's some MacGyver shit right there. Nice tip RJ!
RJ The Magician. Now I regret throwing away hub/freewheel from my old Puch bike that were glued together.
found it useful and interesting! lost a hub a few months ago in this situation. a lesson to learn, never cut the spokes.
VERY NICE!!! The only time i did this i sacrifice the hub. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!
Allways one of the best to help me when fixing bikes and im now working on a clown bike :)
Just wanted to say I love your videos and I don't know how you don't have like a million subs yet haha. You inspired me to build my first fixie and I'm only 15. Also wanted to ask, on my fixie I wanted a back brake since I live in a very hilly area and I'm not sure what the best way is to attach rear brake cable housing to the frame as it doesn't have any built in cable guides. Im just using tiptoes for now
Clamp on cable stops. Get a pair of single stops. www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004FT1LGO/ref=nosim/youtube25-20
Thank you very much! Especially for the quick response
uma grande ideia para um imenso problema...parabéns!!!
hello rj! Do you think it would be possible for me to cut a freewheel off of a hub? i wanna reuse the spokes and am a little short on cash. It would be so much easier to just get a hacksaw than to get it to a shop
Very useful video! Thanks!
Brilliant, RJ!
That's a really good method!
Hello RJ, I have a question are sealed or cartridge bearing better then the normal loose ones. Can I get them replaced in my hub which has the normal lose bearings?
Not you can't replace loose bearings with a cartridge bearing.
So I don't have any spokes nor a rim. I live in the mountains. I have two classic Shimano hubs. One dura ace one ultegra both 9 speed. The dura ace free hub started making a strange noise on built wheel but I have a ultegra that is in plastic both NOS. I used 2, 2x4 flat and cut half circles in them and sandwiched the hub in between them just so the flange will touch the wood with enough space to use finish nails that fit perfect to simulate spokes. About 6-8 finish nails held the hub. Was able to unscrew! Whoop, whoop.
I just subbed bro keep up your awesome vids
Awesome! That's really genius 👌
arghh... I watched this after I watched your removing freewheel with no spokes video. So I cut all the spokes off the hub and was trying to review that video one more time. Then I found this video. ~@%G#%~!

RJ The Bike Guy thanks rj i have to buy treadless headset i have treadless stem thanks
Nice job...
Great video man, but 2 months too late! Had this exact situation and was at a loss for what to do, ended up just destroying the hub to save the free wheel
Thank you
What grease would you suggest for a road bike?
Red Grovyle on the chain ty
Red Grovyle Thank you, would you recommended WD40?
If you are talking about ordinary WD-40, it is not a lubricant. It is designed for displacing water. It is a solvent with a little bit of oil in it. Use a good chain lube.
RJ The Bike Guy simon from gcn has a video where he says if you only use wd40 as your degreaser, and your lube, it works fine. they have since been sponsored by muc off so he shills their stuff now, but it is an interesting video.
WD-40 does have a line a bike specific lubes. Those are probably okay. But regular WD-40 in the blue and yellow can is NOT a good lubricant!
Fantastic!
Amazing!!!! 👍🏼
How'd yer figure that out
Thanks.
what is the name or model of this hub?
I think it's a Maillard.
just respect..
Genious !
amazing !!
Great, but what if there are no spokes?
What if you wanna save the spokes too?
Why would you want to save a few pieces of cut spokes?
Then don't frigging cut them!
Comedy gold!!! :-D
I like it.
👍👍👍
damn, I could have used this only 6 hours ago....
That looked a little too easy, have you tried that technique before?
Yes. This was my second attempt at making this video. The first freewheel was much hard to remove. But it did come off. But then I realized after I broke it loose, the camera wasn't recording and it ruined the whole video. So I had to cut up a second wheel and start over. This freewheel broke free much easier.
Hi RJ The Bike Guy. Thanks a lot for this film. Actually I've already faced this kind of challege and solved this problem making additional tool: mslonik.pl/rowery/technika/tworczosc-wlasna/1040-narzedzie-do-odkrecania-wolnobiegu The article is in Polish but some pictures are self-explanatory (I hope).
I have seen something similar to this using wood and nails and might make a video with something like that in the future.
I feel cheated after watching with great anticipation, must be the cheater bar
when the hell has someone had to do this
I recently got 3 vintage hubs in the mail from a friend who was clearing out his garage. They still have the freewheels on there, but no spokes. Makes it a little harder.
Hi RJ
Thanks for the videos, I have learned a lot from you and now I make a living from repairing bikes.
I drew a tool for my SR Suntour fork and printed it with a 3D printer.
I have attached a picture of the tool
facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1377461518955410&set=a.807824042585830.1073741830.100000747259266&type=3&theater
I thought you could use this tip for future tools.
If you want I can send you the files for the 3D printer and you can print the tools at your local 3D printer shop.
Have a nice day,
Ovi
Very cool! I have the actual Suntour tools now. But that is a great idea. They work pretty well?
If your design of the tool is correct from the start then they work very well. Just make sure to use a strong plastic material for the 3D printer.
I have seen a guy print a tool for the bottom bracket ( shimano hollowtech ) and it worked.
I think for the plastic caps of forks are strong enough.
if i watch this a few weeks back i didn't destroy my hub :(
Bummer! I guess this video will have value for people in the future then.
