@Diana Pennepacker Starfighters were dangerous because of their use of proton torpedoes and concussion missile systems. For the rebels anyways. The empire contributed to this by not having any real point defence and relying too heavily on cheap and mass number of fighters. By the time the rebels acquired X-wings, their starfighter corps tended to out perform ties and devastate imperial ships. From the perspective of world building in Legends and even disney canon (not much world building from disney), this is important for the rebels that did not have a lot of ships that could go toe to toe with ISDs, so fighters and bombers that could hurt imp ships made a lot of sense. Plus it's cool.
Empire at War is true to the ship in cannon. In a fleet with 20 slots, I usually had 4-6 slots filled with 2-3 Corellian gunships. They were fast and versatile enough that I could pack together a fleet of 8-10 of them just for hit-and-run raids.

I served in the U.S. Navy aboard a Frigate. Just to clarify, a Corvette (like the CR90) cannot be larger than a Frigate (such as how the DP20 is classfiied). The ship classes are based on Tonnage and Armaments. It would be more appropriate to say that the DP20 is just another kind of Corvette that is more combat oriented vs the CR90 which is designed with dual-purpose, civilian applications in mind.
I love these kind of fast gunships that are hard for capital ships to hit, but are big enough to have proper shields and weapons. The Millennium Falcon with a crew of 4 civilians can easily destroy several squadrons of tie fighters, imagine that, without any of the wasted space of being a freighter, and a crew of trained gunners.
This ship is an absolute beast in the Empire At War games. I've wiped out countless technically superior fleets of imperial ships with massive swarms of these babies.
hey Eck, when concussion missiles are fired during a space battle do they have the same visual characteristics as standard laser fire? is there a reason we don't see volleys of missiles being launched at capital ships in "on screen" SW media? To my knowledge, other than turbo and canon lasers we've only really seen Luke's proton launch, Wedge + Lando in RoTJ, bombs from Y wings and Tie bombers. So many ships list their arsenal as having missile tubes but we don' see them in action. Any insight on this? Cheers mate, keep it up
“This is going to be a fighting ship. I intend to go in harm’s way, and anyone who doesn’t want to go along had better get off right now." -then-Lt. Cmdr. Ernest Evans at the 1943 commissioning of the Fletcher-class destroyer _Johnston._ Perfect motto for the plucky Rebel captains in these Corellian-made ships fearlessly going into battle against Imperial ships that massively outmass and outgun them.
I know I have to take it with a grain of salt since that was a video game, but the Gunship really served me well in the games I played. Generally, I know it was a gameplay balance thing, but while Imperial designs were more powerful, they were also more inefficient. For the resources you put in for it, the rebel designs were always better. The MonCals were generally better than ISDs. The only exception is the TIE Defender. Figures Thrawn was involved in designing that.
my Respect for the DP-20 Gunship grew tremendously when my Roleplaying character came into possession of two of them. They can hold their own against any fighter, and many smaller cap ships, and outrun anything they can't fight. EaW kinda made them underwhelming, IMO
When I would get bored I would go back and play empire at war a lot. And one of the things I did a few times was basically do the Galaxy conquest mode and try to use the most absurd or weakest vehicles and troops to win. I played as the rebels one time around and the only thing I used were cr90 Corvettes and the dp20 corvettes. I wouldn't even use starships or bombers. A whole swarm of those things could easily take down a couple star destroyers.
I have to assume that one of the disadvantages inherent in the DP20s lack of cargo space would be a limitation in its ability to operate away from a base for as long as ships like the CR90
Oh that's sick, I thought the genesis of this vehicle was in Empire at War. It's much cooler knowing it comes from concept art and not just from a desire to balance a game.
This is a weird thing to compliment you on Eck, but I’ve been loving your video titles and thumbnails lately! They’re fun and make me chuckle and draw me in better than the red arrows do
Corellians are terrifying shipbuilders. Sure the Mon Cala can build fantastic Star cruisers, but they’re not gonna pack a cruiser punch into a corvette frame, without sacrificing speed.
These ships along with the CR90 were a cheap and effective backbone of any good fleet. RTS fans will remember these ships fondly for there versatility.
STARWARS REBELION: drop a 2 or 3 of those on an Imperial controlled world, arriving 1 "day" before a 2 or 3 carriers show up with a loadout of Y-wings. Gunships retreat to a back corner, imperial Ties flyout ahead of any capital ships. Ties get eliminated and Gunships retreat from battle. Carriers show up on the next turn and retreat to a corner while the Y-wings neutralize the capital ships... except Lancers, Stay the hell away from Lancers. Easy wins usually and early game play research that can reduce the orbital footprint of the EMPIRE.
I always imagined a melenium falcon sized ship with multiple quad lazer blaster stations doing quite well as a fighter screen. This type of ship could be employed as fleet fighter defence freeing up the fighters to escort bombers on attack runs.
3:18 This actually seems like the type of ship that Thrawn would have held in high esteem/regard. Small size, for a warship, but capable of dealing and withstanding heavy damage. Five or six of these could potentially take out a Star Destroyer - they have enough fast rotating turbo-lasers to deal with any kind of fighter escorts - after that (or at the same time), focus fire on the shield generators and engines, from the rear of the ship. The Star Destroyers have no real defence against massed fire from the stern of the ship, at the engines. The Malevolence (Clone Wars) had the same weakness - so much heavy fire capacity forward and broadside - nothing to the stern against pursuing ships - even though that was proved to be an obvious design flaw.
The DP-20 might have passed for light freighters on sensors when not in visual distance- so it not having cargo may not have been such a big deal. We've seen the Ghost pass as different makes and models on long range sensors, so it's plausible.
It kind of sounds like a Star Wars version of the WW2 Atlanta Class light cruiser. It was armed with 8 twin 5 Inch Guns, Torpedos and AA Guns. And it was used as a commandship for a Destroyer Fleet or as an AA ecsord for bigger ships. Sort of like the DP20
@@schiffsmechaniker8061 All good. I don't mind an argument as long as it stays polite. I also suspected that you already knew, but experience has tought me to err on the side of caution.
Fun point, the design would work from aesthetics, turret layout instantly also in Star Citizens and everyone who is not a Star Wars geek would never recognize it. ^^
Love the Coreillean Gunship. A video on the Tri-Fighter or "Clutch" from I,Jedi written by Michael a stackpol would be awesome. It was a good Ugly design.
Really like the DP20. Honestly more than the CR-90. The CR’s forward section just feels really off to me. The DP’s is still a little weird but better. And I definitely like it’s loadout better
3:50 I always got the impression Starwars space battles are trying to capture the feel of WW2 naval battles. In that regard it's even funnier how many shipboard weapons in Starwars reley soley on local manual controll. Given that centralised firedirection using firing sollutions calculated by firecontroll computers to remote-controll AA emplacements throughout the ship was allready a thing in WW2. I'm guessing the desire to give the characters more agency was an important factor - aka: "noone wants to read a story about computers waging war" - but I wonder if a lack of knowlege in that field didn't also play a role.
Ya know what else I really like about the original old marvel star wars comics? Every ship is drawn…by hand…by a talented artist that *didn’t* have to steal some fan’s 3d model. just sayin’ /sarcasm
As much as I like Corellian ships, I think Mon Calamari are the best ship designers - turning what are essentially civilian cruise ships into warships that can stand up against ISDs, lol
When I play Star Wars: Rebellion I don't even use starfighters of my own and use Corellian Corvettes and Gunships (once I unlock the tech) as my sole anti-fighter defense. This frees up manufacturing for actual capital ships and I don't need to consider how many starfighters ships can carry, just how many turbolasers and ion cannons they hold.
Can anyone else see this ship fitting in with The Expanse (albeit with a different deck arrangement and weapons)? It looks like it could be a UNN gunship design. Saying that...it would be cool to see a larger ship like this flying around like a fighter in Star Wars, performing flips and hard turns :)

To my knowledge, other than turbo and canon lasers we've only really seen Luke's proton launch, Wedge + Lando in RoTJ, bombs from Y wings and Tie bombers. So many ships list their arsenal as having missile tubes but we don' see them in action. Any insight on this? Cheers mate, keep it up
Ah the Corellian Gunship. Always would have a few of those in my Alliance Task Force Fleets in Star Wars: Rebellion.
I love that, in Empire At War, a swarm of these can kill everything, including the entire Star Destroyer and the frame rate.
“This is going to be a fighting ship. I intend to go in harm’s way, and anyone who doesn’t want to go along had better get off right now." -then-Lt. Cmdr. Ernest Evans at the 1943 commissioning of the Fletcher-class destroyer _Johnston._
Perfect motto for the plucky Rebel captains in these Corellian-made ships fearlessly going into battle against Imperial ships that massively outmass and outgun them.
the DP20 was silly in how well armed it was compared to any ship its size.
Been making my own fleet comprised of mostly separatist remnant assets, but the DP-20 was one of the first ships I knew I needed.
Wow, amazing work on the research. Going back to OG comics and stuff is a 10/10 in my book
The DP20 is a Destroyer Frigate. Strength in numbers. Absolutely a power house but backed up could cripple Star Destroyer Capital ships.
I have to assume that one of the disadvantages inherent in the DP20s lack of cargo space would be a limitation in its ability to operate away from a base for as long as ships like the CR90
As someone who has used the DP20 a LOT in Empire at War, this assessment is 100% right.
Oh that's sick, I thought the genesis of this vehicle was in Empire at War. It's much cooler knowing it comes from concept art and not just from a desire to balance a game.
The Baltimore Clipper: Privateer and Warship of the American Navy, fastest thing on the water, could damn near sail against the wind!
This is a weird thing to compliment you on Eck, but I’ve been loving your video titles and thumbnails lately! They’re fun and make me chuckle and draw me in better than the red arrows do
I remember fielding a few fleets of just dp20s and a few cr90s to back them up in the og empire at war. Packed a hell of a punch
I was just thinking today I'd love to see more of the Corellian Gunship....and then your video comes out!
Amazing upload as always
Corellians are terrifying shipbuilders. Sure the Mon Cala can build fantastic Star cruisers, but they’re not gonna pack a cruiser punch into a corvette frame, without sacrificing speed.
These ships along with the CR90 were a cheap and effective backbone of any good fleet.
RTS fans will remember these ships fondly for there versatility.
Finally justice for my favorite Rebel era ship!!!!
Corellian ship builders take a lot of pride in their work.
This was always a favorite of mine! I would frequently spam-built them to fill out my fleets in Star Wars Rebellion.
I always imagined a melenium falcon sized ship with multiple quad lazer blaster stations doing quite well as a fighter screen. This type of ship could be employed as fleet fighter defence freeing up the fighters to escort bombers on attack runs.
nice job dude!
may the force be with you
Last time I was this early. Tatooine had one sun
I love building up small fleets with these and CR90 with A-wings and xwings in Empire at War
I always love paring DP20 and CR90 in EaW, especially with other Corellian ships in mods.
Reminds me of the Martian corvettes from The Expanse both in rough design and spread of weapons. Very cool.
The DP-20 might have passed for light freighters on sensors when not in visual distance- so it not having cargo may not have been such a big deal.
We've seen the Ghost pass as different makes and models on long range sensors, so it's plausible.
I love this shop on Empires At War. I usually always have 2-3 on the front lines.
*Snif* finally my fave is getting the recognition it deserves *wipes away tears*
I remember this from Empire at War. Every Star Destroyer and every Cruiser from the Empire was an easy prey
Nice! Thanks for the video.
Yea but the Atlanta Class had centralised fire direction...
@@Bird_Dog00 That's right. But it's also a real ship. And it's close enough to mention it
@@schiffsmechaniker8061 I wasn't disagreing with your analogy, I was just throwing some shade at the SW ship for having manually controled guns...
@@Bird_Dog00 I now. Sorry if it felt that i am arguing with you. I was not.
Hot damn, we need this in Armada!
If I learned anything from Freespace, it’s that if something is called a “gunship” in space? It’s more gun than ship, and to STAY AWAY.
BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK, BARK BARK BARK. BARK BARK BARK, BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK. BARK.
Love the Coreillean Gunship.
A video on the Tri-Fighter or "Clutch" from I,Jedi written by Michael a stackpol would be awesome. It was a good Ugly design.
I always found the clutch a bit odd when there was an official tri-winged TIE variant, the TIE/PH Phantom.
Really like the DP20. Honestly more than the CR-90. The CR’s forward section just feels really off to me. The DP’s is still a little weird but better. And I definitely like it’s loadout better
Always loved this thing. Just tiny and covered in guns

I always got the impression Starwars space battles are trying to capture the feel of WW2 naval battles.
I do love the DP-20. It's an engine with guns. where there are not guns there are missile launchers.
I hope one of them is called the Screaming Firehawk. You know, so they can advertise that they’re a gunship.
Ya know what else I really like about the original old marvel star wars comics?
Every ship is drawn…by hand…by a talented artist that *didn’t* have to steal some fan’s 3d model.
just sayin’ /sarcasm
If I had a group of DP20’s at my disposal as a rebel admiral, id use them in “wolf pack” attacks, similar to the German Uboats
This thing was my go-to in unmodded Empire at War.
I remember I had corelian gunships used for pickets ships against tie fighters in SW rebellion.
