- On June 15th, 2016, the San Diego Police Department Traffic Unit, in cooperation with BNSF Railroad Police, Operation Lifesaver, and MTS conducted railroad crossing enforcement at the 28th Street and Harbor Drive crossing, next to the Harborside Trolley Station in Logan Heights.
This crossing is well known for cars crossing in front of moving trains, and pedestrians mainly from the nearby shipyards racing across the tracks in order to beat the slow moving trains. Officers were there all afternoon, fully enforcing the railroad laws.
During the hour I was there, countless drivers were trying to beat the train, and most of them were pulled over and cited. Pedestrians were also stopped and either educated or cited about the dangers of crossing train tracks when trains are approaching. As I was leaving, a small car accident happened, where a lady texting hit the back of another car stopped at the crossing waiting for the train. Unfortunately I didn't catch it on camera, but the officers who witnessed it as well certainly weren't happy!
BNSF provided 2 newly rebuild GP60M-3 locomotives, which were BNSF 117 and 155, that ran back and forth past the crossing all afternoon.
