This video is very hyped up, perhaps giving somewhat of an unrealistic view of what civil is really like. Just to pick three: 1) Creativity: civil engineering is not very creative by nature. Why? because you always want to play it safe and create designs that have been proven to work bc you don't want the risk (at all) of something going wrong as people could die. Therefore, you tend to avoid creativity on the big scale. There is some creativity for smaller things, though. 2) Travel: Yes, you can travel. However, don't think they're going to send you to Paris or London. They will send you to very, very rural towns where your company doesn't have a local presence. If they have a project in e.g. paris the company will just get a local paris employee to cover that job as opposed to paying for your travels to go to paris. 3) High pay: the pay slightly above average but I wouldn't say high. This is very unfortunate bc civil engineering is difficult, not sure why we allow society to pay us less.

I am a civil engineering technologist specializing in the water/sewer branch. Very hard work and under constant pressure!!! Here in ZA civil engineers are at the bottom of all fields of engineering and earnings!!!
The up side, challenges, you will always be on a learning curve, you can travel.... Your work can be seen..... The downside, long hours, rubbish pay that goes with the pressure... two questions I would ask... 1) How can an earth worker earn more than the engineer who has designed the job... 2) Compare your pay to working hours, it isn’t great and definitely compared to other professions... Structural enginfor 25 years... (you do it for the love not the money)
I’m trying decide between architecture and civil engineering. People keep telling me that they are two totally different things. But I feel my mindset suits either one. Which one will work out best in the end for me tho?

@@kingdeedeedee1450 I don't think it's boring. But most people don't get a job here( India) less demand more supply and at the end everything is fucked up.
Pros: You'll learn a lot, some of it will be interesting, and the pay's good. Cons: You'll be unable to make a video that doesn't sound like someone reading a powerpoint...
I'm a Geotechnical engineer for 3 years now... it might've be hard at start, but if you have enough connection, keep your head low, learn as much as you can and work professional, in 1 year time, you'll get the hang of it and the job will eventually find you. But if you're so passive, have no friend, no connection and all, it'll gonna be uphill all the way. Some of my friends quits just after 1-2 years. Working 40 hours per week? Hah... Try 60/week m8. And if you're on "peak season" where project comes pouring down like rain, you gotta work about 100hours/week (±15 hours per day, includes weekends). But yeah the pay's good though...
@@anonymous-zf1qm if this is in the US and he's a civil engineer, US bureau of statistics notes 87000 USD is the median wage -from May 2019. Will vary depending on experience and state though!
What is your thoughts on having an urban planning/studies and management science bachelor then getting a civil engineering masters? The way covid played with my academic pons and the over stress/depression is making me think of other routes. Could I go for a master in Civil when my bachelors is in planning and magnet science?
I have been working for almost 4 years as a Civil Engineer and I agree with all the cons stated here. In fact, here in India the market is not so good for the field and its tough to stay in a job for more than a year and even they will not provide you a good salary as per your talent and experience. The work pressure is quite high and client and your company both wants you to work 7 days a week to meet the deadlines, you don't get time for your family and loved ones. Being in the execution part for so long, I no longer love my job, though I am quite good at it but the job just takes the life out of you.
THE GHOST2000 It all depends on your skills. An entry level engineer gets 10-15K on average who doesn't have much knowledge about the methods and technologies used in industry. Whilst if you have a good knowledge of IS codes, can work fast on spreadsheets , understand drawings in conjunction to other drawings, draft , calculate the structural loads then you are good to go and expect around 30k . Still remember when you're working that you are not only a civil engineer but a project manager, so you should know about the electrical systems , HVAC ,IT, , mechanical and plumbing system in depth . You should also know the architectural part because most of fresher engineers just forget it during execution and without it whatever you do is a waste.
I had breakdowns where I want to give up the course, but it turned out pretty well. It is a matter of dedication to learn. No one really "sucks" at math. Studying and answering practice tests really helps.
it is never too late!! as a studying civil and environmental engineer, I find it the prospect of constructing cities, or aiding third world countries to be very exciting! there are so many things you can do with the degree itself!
Hi , I'm living in the Estate of Florida and I would like to know what is the difference between Civil Engineer and General Contractor? The Civil Engineer can sign permits instead the General Contractor?
Marcel Faria general contractors deal with construction and are usually on the project site. They do not deal with the math side of things like calculating load and building plans, etc. the civil engineers basically create the plans for the contractors to carry out
Great video That part where you say chemical engineers work at the microscopic level is not true though, Macroscopic scale is what differentiates them from chemists.
XD i can't believe ppl still thinks that ce is a "man job". But srly, of course you can. The only job i know that women can't have is being a Priest or a sperm donor. peace!
Do you mean you have heart related problems? If so, it's possible to be a Civil Engineer so as long as you can manage your health problems properly. One of the CONS of being a Civil Engineer is the pressure and stress that comes with the job,but if you are organised and can manage yourself and people well, you should be okay.
I wouldn’t recommend you coming down here unless u really are talented in something if it’s civil engineering and the way expensive Cali furthermore civil engineers don’t make that much here rather be in the UK than here

@@fuzzypicklesgaming439 im in mechanical
@@enja001 ohh, 60 hours is way too much
From Tanzania East Africa, I appriciate ur work
Pros:
You'll learn a lot, some of it will be interesting, and the pay's good.
Cons:
You'll be unable to make a video that doesn't sound like someone reading a powerpoint...
Hey, i want to ask, what do you mean by "the pay´s good though"... How much is that for you?
How much is your salary?
@@anonymous-zf1qm if this is in the US and he's a civil engineer, US bureau of statistics notes 87000 USD is the median wage -from May 2019. Will vary depending on experience and state though!
what the fuck. From where i from, working 40 hrs a week is considered very common. LOL!!! i live in hell
w87g8765 that’s the average everywhere 8 hours a day, CE work a lot more than that even at home
is there a way to choose your contractors? I'd like to go for small projects and slowly make em bigger
Cons: Lot of paperwork, slow, politics, bureaucracy, decent but not great pay, boring, high pressure
Just my experience
which country?
Nice presentation. I want to inspire you guys to get a civil engineering course and become a CE.
Is civil really good for your future?
Am I the only one who hates being a civil engnr .??
Why do you hate it?
What is your thoughts on having an urban planning/studies and management science bachelor then getting a civil engineering masters? The way covid played with my academic pons and the over stress/depression is making me think of other routes. Could I go for a master in Civil when my bachelors is in planning and magnet science?
Is the USA highly competitive for civil engineers? Is California competitive ?
I have been working for almost 4 years as a Civil Engineer and I agree with all the cons stated here. In fact, here in India the market is not so good for the field and its tough to stay in a job for more than a year and even they will not provide you a good salary as per your talent and experience.
The work pressure is quite high and client and your company both wants you to work 7 days a week to meet the deadlines, you don't get time for your family and loved ones. Being in the execution part for so long, I no longer love my job, though I am quite good at it but the job just takes the life out of you.
Perry Tag I'm from India studying CE now...How much salary will I get at first on average ?
Thank you Sir
THE GHOST2000 you're welcome man.
the grass is always greener on the other side.
good
In my country we work 45-50 hours per week and thats common xD
We work 60hr
Which country? Curious to know
Its exactly what i expected.....👏👏👏👏👏
should I take civil engineering in college even if sucked at math (all branches of math )?
I had breakdowns where I want to give up the course, but it turned out pretty well. It is a matter of dedication to learn. No one really "sucks" at math. Studying and answering practice tests really helps.
I agree with this. If you work hard then you can do it
Hey this makes me motivated af. so hey how are you now ? How does things working for you? Did you take up engineering? I wanna know
Im 24, it’s too late to start college for this? Advice please
Its never too late to do something you love, especially knowing someday your time on this Earth will end.
Not too late and not unusual for this field
it's not too late, i'm 21 and i just switched majors to CE, some of my classmates are in their late 20's and 30's
it is never too late!! as a studying civil and environmental engineer, I find it the prospect of constructing cities, or aiding third world countries to be very exciting! there are so many things you can do with the degree itself!
No lol, I'm in the first semester. Average age is 23.
Is it hard to get a job
Great video
Which subject do i have to be good at to be an engineer? ( Do i have to be best at math )
Great video and a very good morale booster for a Freshmen CE student
And great start up business when you get to know the job, and ppl
Great content !
If someone work in Office is he will be a Structure designer?
Watch the video with 1.5 playback speed and you'll thank me later
Nice video guys!
Thanks!
Why do I see lots of pictures from Montreal in this video?
Best sites or blogs to learn design as per ASCE
Hi , I'm living in the Estate of Florida and I would like to know what is the difference between Civil Engineer and General Contractor? The Civil Engineer can sign permits instead the General Contractor?
Marcel Faria general contractors deal with construction and are usually on the project site. They do not deal with the math side of things like calculating load and building plans, etc. the civil engineers basically create the plans for the contractors to carry out
I have an important question do civil engineers build like they do in construction
What do you mean?
Civil engineering is hard for girls ??
40 hours a week? Try Architecture
gene josue try architecture if you want 1/3 the pay

That part where you say chemical engineers work at the microscopic level is not true though, Macroscopic scale is what differentiates them from chemists.
I am a grade10 student. Can I be a civil engineer even though I am a girl?
Keyk Pop yes you can!, there's more guys as civil engineers than girls, but that doesn't mean you can't be one 👍🏼
I’m a girl and I’m going to university next year for civil engineering.
Same here
XD i can't believe ppl still thinks that ce is a "man job".
But srly, of course you can. The only job i know that women can't have is being a Priest or a sperm donor. peace!
This question is like asking if a student can as a teacher a question during class, you can do it if you want to, or you won’t do it.
Interesting view! However, in my country all the pros mentioned here do not hold true here, all the cons but indeed :)
Is it possible for a heart patient to be a civil engineer?
Do you mean you have heart related problems? If so, it's possible to be a Civil Engineer so as long as you can manage your health problems properly. One of the CONS of being a Civil Engineer is the pressure and stress that comes with the job,but if you are organised and can manage yourself and people well, you should be okay.
Thank you sir for sharing u r experience.
they pay you hella good cash I have 2 kids a 1 story house and yet I have so much leftover money
What country?
nice work
Thanks!
Not worth it. Civil engineering is a dead field. Better if you go into medicine and finance, that’s where the money and respect is.
Anyone know the name of the structure at 5:02?
The city is montreal.
Its montreal’s olympic stadium
Beautiful stadium to visit
Is it civil engineers responsibility of making that building look like that?
Cons r true
PLEASE hire a better voiceover guy!
83 thousand a year,I make that in 6 months sleeping with woman that belong to engineers.

You can build tanks, ships and jets. I am a muslim and i Love Civil Engineering.
advanced civil engineers can build any structures.
good video but u gotta get better at reading

I wouldn’t recommend you coming down here unless u really are talented in something if it’s civil engineering and the way expensive Cali furthermore civil engineers don’t make that much here rather be in the UK than here
