  • In this video, my friend Lisa the speech language pathologist works with my daughter Emily on her "k" sound while using a creative and fun color game. Big thanks to Lisa for your help with this video!

    Fun cute activity... great job!!
    To all therapists and parents:
For therapeutic purposes the cycles approach with drill while playing the game would help the child in making faster progress... and getting more practice during the sessions.
Remember therapist, we only have about 30 or 45 minutes, we want to try and get as much practice as possible during our session.
Also having the child put a glove on (or washing hands) and pushing tongue back with her index finger during production of /k/ would be beneficiak in providing the child with cues to remember that tongue goes in the back . :) works like magic
When children are having so much difficulty with the k sound it is important not only to use tactile cues to push the tongue back, but also to only have the child practice K in words that are paired with back vowels.. (ie. Car, cool, cap, cop) I would never use the word key initially, as it is a front vowel and we are trying to get the child to keep her tongue in the back.
Key is a word I would practice later on, as the child progresses.
This approach also focuses on importance of accuracy, we need to provide our clients with the max amount of cuing (and fade it out) in order to have a over 60% accuracy during each session. Otherwise we are having the child practice target sound in error... and we should not do that.
If pushing tongue back does not work, then we should go back to/ K/ isolation. Of course all while having fun and I'm playing the game.
My goal is 100 words in a 40-minute session,. Where the child would say "cop" 10 times and then take a turn. I work with 3 to 5 year olds and 9 out of 10 are able to complete all hundred words during a session. Children with difficulty staying on task or engage during a session can do 60-70 words. Never less that 50 reps...
I have to admit via tele- services kiddos are doing less, 40-70 per session depending on the child and how engaged family is...
    happy drilling!
Just like at the gym, we will not get toned arms if we do 10 or 20 reps a week...
    Practice practice practice :)

Hello, could you make a video on how to take articulation data using the +/- system and what to mare if the made a incorrect production on the first trial, but were able to produce it correctly with cues. How old that look while taking notes in real time? Thank you!

Why is an OT working on speech articulation? Should be an SLP
