- Mortal Kombat Annihilation, the 1997 live action sequel to the original MK movie, is... Oh man, it's something. Annihilation carries a very distinct reputation, as I'm sure you've heard. Is it a bad movie? Yes, it is. Is it shocking that such a film was released in theaters? Honestly, I think it is shocking, yes. Look, the '95 OG Mortal Kombat movie is surprisingly good! It holds up, even to this day, it's charming and nostalgic. Mortal Kombat Annihilation is terrible from head to toe. The writing is terrible, the plot is worthless, the acting is garbage, re-used special effects and bad cuts pull it down even from a production standpoint, it sucks. I'm telling you, it sucks. So now, join my good friend Captain McKay and I as we celebrate this terrible movie for damn near 3 hours. Enjoy it!

Yet there's no preview footoge within a nearly 3 hour video? Interesting. Then again this really isn't a video; just a podcast with a still image on screen. Nothing against this format but in the future, it wouldn't hurt to preface these things as being a PodCast and NOT a regular review video(with clips and such). The one memory that I will always have is when I saw this in the theater when Nightwolf showed up,Someone yelled out loud *"OH SHIT ITS THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR!.!!"* and the crowd all cracked up @ the same time for like a good 3 minutes.😂

This is my favorite bad movie of all time, and it isn’t close. It’s so hilarious, and everything is so fucking bad, but never in a bad way, and the last thing you could call it is boring. To this day, my friends and I quote this movie in regular conversation…and IT. IS. GLORIOUS!!!

I remember watching this movie when it came out. Some girl yelled out "that was terrible" with that infamous line from Sindel and walked out the theater with her boyfriend or the guy she was with. I do remember people laughing and doing sighs at the dialogue. To be honest i do remember being disappointed the first 5 minutes. Not sure why i didn't walk out. It was a life time ago.

Oh man, I can’t believe it’s time to discuss one of the absolute worst movies of all time. I swear this movie is SUPER terrible that when I rewatched it recently to hype up this Mortal Kombat Monday episode that I was hoping for, I laughed throughout the WHOLE thing, and I swear I nearly had a heart attack by the end of it.😅😂🤣
My god, what an absolute train wreck, but at the very same time, oddly enough, I’m glad it exists. We all need a good laugh here and there, whether the material is cringe or amazing. I’m glad you’re doing this, Ian. This is why I love your content, always entertaining and hilarious. 👍😂❤️

They didn't even show this movie in the theaters in my country Iceland, like the first movie was. I caught it on TV, and didn't really put together that it meant that it was just that bad. All I remembered was Jax having metal arms to boost his confidence, according to Sonya, which even then I thought was silly. Kitana straight-facedly explaining how those giant hamster ball things work is so ridiculous.

From 1993-1997, it feels like Johnny Cage literally doesn't exist at the time. He's in MK Annihilation for one moment of the film, was not in Defender of the Realm cartoon (not even in the flashbacks or reference), not in MK3 and Ultimate MK3, a majority of the merch at the time did not sell any Johnny Cage merch. He was in MK Trilogy but even some folks at the time didn't really care about him and seeing him as an afterthought. It wasn't until MK4 that Johnny Cage finally became relevant again.

17:35 No way! Double feature with MK: Annihilation and Spawn!? That is the stinkiest double feature imaginable... and it's also exactly the way I saw this movie for the first time too! Borrowed both of them on a VHS from this random old couple that lived next to my friend's house. No idea why they had these two movies, but it was certainly a memorable movie night. Even then, as a little kid, I thought the Spawn movie was lame, but I do remember liking Annihilation quite a bit.
Honestly, this movie is the most bonkers rollercoaster of emotions i've ever experienced. I used to love... seriously LOVE this film when I was a nerdy pre-teen, a BIG nerdy pre-teen MK fan. There was nothing wrong with it in my eyes.
A few years later, i kind of forgot about the movie, but i would still play the videogames. But suddenly some random dude at college played the Mileena and Sonya fight on the computer... and just like some Vietnam-type shit, i was thinking like "what was that dragon tattoo shit on their backs?!" "Why did sub-zero and scorpion have 5 minutes cameos?!" "What in the motherfuck is that Shao-Khan animality?!" "Too bad YOU... wiLl dIE" .... Dude.... i cringed so fucking hard i ruined my face for christmas photos. And being a big fan of MK this film really hurt my soul that day lol i DESPISED everything about Annihilation. I wouldn't watch it or even remember it without cringing or feeling disapointed.
It wasn't until 2 years ago that me and some friends had a party, we got drunk and started watching bad movies and of course, Annihilation came out and we just couldn't stop laughing lol and just like you guys, we just kept quoting every bad line of the movie. Now i agree, Annihilation is objectively bullshit, but it's bullshit that gives me no ther option but to admire it... for how bullshit it is xd
Oh man. This movie is the ultimate guilty pleasure for me. As a kid I adored this movie almost as much as the first one. As an adult though I keep thinking "what could have been". Its a terrible movie but I must admit that the fight scenes are still pretty cool and I do love the music throughout the movie.

1:48:00 from what I've read is that Liu Kang and Kitana were supposed to have a fight with Sheeva but animating her would have been very expensive so they just squashed her with the cage.
2:14:20 one thing that I never hear anyone mention is that when Sonya goes for the frankensteiner on Ermac, they zoom in on his face and his mask completely falls off and you can clearly see the actor's face and its just hilarious to me 😂🤣

Haha I enjoyed this video so much, you guys always take me back to my childhood when you make videos like this, thanks for the memories. Man I loved this movie so much back then, I still appreciate it now. I re watch it as an adult and I can see why everyone says it’s bad, but it will still always be my favorite childhood movie. LIu Kang whole journey of passing the test does not make sense to me.
The Sonya replacement was okay. She’s not as spicy or aggressive as the first one. I do think she was a better fighter than the first Sonya and enjoyed her fight with Mileena(although it would’ve been a quick fight had Mileena not screemed in the beginning 😂). Jaxx comedic timing is equivalent to Johnny Cage from the first movie.
I have a feeling Ian really likes the velo-spheres haha 🤣😂 this is brilliant had a real laugh watching this & reliving my childhood a little because I was a big mark for this movie when I was kid haha 😂🤣

I watched this movie on VHS on a CRT TV, so I wasn't able to fully grasp how bad the first five minutes looked; I was too busy being like "cool, I'm 12 and they're doing MK3."
I think the thing I look forward to most in any video or podcast about this movie (and I think everybody who watches any MKA review has one of these) is people making fun of the "it was soooo easy" line.

This flick is like a porno made for Saturday Morning viewing. It’s got all the set up and seediness for sex scene after sex scene, but since it’s for Saturday Morning you can’t have sex scenes, so instead you have badly choreographed Power Rangers fight scenes instead.
It’s still a bit of a greasy movies tho. So bizarre how they messed up the good thing they had going with the first.

I remember going to see this movie and I got there late. I sat down just as they were fighting Smoke. That fight scene had an air of cheap crappiness that hit me immediately. And then came Sub-Zero gliding in on an effect so bad it ruined any hope of immersion, even for 13 year old me.
I think it might have been the first time I became aware of poor screenwriting, especially the bad characterisation. I had a crush on Talisa Soto in the first movie but in this one, more than ever, Kitana was just an absolute charisma vacuum.
I loved the first one and I just felt so bewildered by the lack of quality in the sequel. I sat and watched the whole thing but I distinctly remember not feeling any hype, even during the fight scenes, even with the soundtrack trying to pump me up... I was just kind of stunned at how awful it was. I think it was only many years later that I watched it and started to find aspects of it funny. At the time I was just like, wtf is any of this?
Hahahahaha. It's amazing to recall the first time you realized what makes a bad movie bad.
Let's be honest, drinking antifreeze is way more fun than this movie. PERIOD.

Don't know if anyone has said this yet, but Mythologies came out four days prior to Annihilation, and MK4 about a month prior, so that'd be how a viewer would know about Shinnok, but they wouldn't have a whole lotta time.
Motaro, Jax, and some of the other cast were from American Gladiators.

This may be a hot take, but I like Sandra Hess as Sonya Blade way more than Bridgette Wilson. Bridgette's fight with Kano is so bad, she's literally falling over because she can't keep her balance. I know Sandra had a stunt double for a lot of it, but it's a lot more convincing. And she DID do some of her own stuff, and since she actually knows what she's doing, it's more seemless. Bridgette doing all her own stuff is neat and all, but it makes for a shitty fight scene. We have stunt doubles for a reason.

Johnny had spare sunglasses! Remember all those suitcases he brought to Shang Tsung's island?? He never changes clothes, so it's obvious he filled them with sunglasses! ALSO James Remar is originally from one of the best fighting movies of all time: The Warriors. Probably how he got the role of Raiden in MK: Annihilation.

Shao Khan’s animality always reminded me of that creature from the movie Willow with Val Kilmer. Been looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint ! Also, Goro looked better in ready player one 2 second cameo then he did in the latest MK film. Here’s to hoping the sequel has lessons learned
Dude he looked so bad in MK 2021, for sure.
This whole movie sucks because of all of these things:
1. No character development between characters, Sub-Zero didn't even realize he killed his own best friend. That's like if in Street Fighter, Ryu appeared out of nowhere and murdered Ken just so to help Guile. It would make no sense.
2. No relationship between Jade, Mileena, and Kitana.
3. No Kung Lao at all in the movie.
4. Johnny Cage dead for the rest of the movie.
5. Sheeva had no fight scene at all in the movie.
6. No Kintaro at all in the movie.
7. Rain had no fight scene in the movie.
8. Baraka sucks in the movie.
9. No explanation of how Scorpion survive MK1.
10. The Animality CGi looks lame.
11. Stryker and Kabal are mention but never appeared.
12. Noob Saibot is a nobody in the movie.
13. No Sektor though I believe Smoke was suppose to be Sektor which may explains why Sub-Zero doesn't care about him and why he only shoots missile only.
14. The multiple Reptiles fight was lame, most of the match is just Raiden and them doing unnecessary kicking that doesn't connect.
15. Sindel is stupid.
16. Shao Kahn not wearing his mask for 90% of the film kinda ruin the badass feel about him.
17. Making Shinnok Shao Kahn and Raiden's dad is just wtf.
18. The story is so rush.
19. The family dragon tattoo thing is just a lame excuse for making the character related.
20. Nightwolf is useless in the film.
21. The Animality didn't do jack in the film.
22. Quan Chi was completely cut from the movie despite being film for some of the part.
23. Why Shinnok is even in the film is anyone's guess.
24. The only good matches in the film are Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion, Sonya vs. Cyrax, Sonya vs. Mileena, and Jax vs. Motaro, the rest are just lame.
25. Raiden getting a haircut in the movie just doesn't sound right in the movie.
26. The voice-works on most of the characters are cheesy and lame.
27. Jade, Rain, and Baraka's death are just lazy stock footage.
28. Scorpion and Sub-Zero only had one scene.
29. Jade is a bad guy.
30. Motaro is the only villain I like while Jax is the only good guy I like which is why their match is the only good match in the film.
Jesus Christ, 30 individual reasons, hahahaha. THAT is passion!
A great listen to an hilariously bad movie😂 😂. The first time I saw MK Annihilation was on VHS. Not sure what my reaction was but I remember watching the movie on regular tv a few years after thinking this shit was awful but man is it fun to watch with friends and make fun of how bad the movie is 😂. Good job guys. I hope this won’t be the last in-depth movie review we hear.

The most interesting fact is that like Robin Shou and Talisa Soto, the guy who play Reptile (Keith Cooke) was one of the few cast to return, just under a different character (the younger Sub-Zero). This guy was with Robin Shou in 3 films, in the first MK movie, then in Annihilation, and also in Beverly Hills Ninja.
I swore Jax would say "I'MMA SPIT" too! Never made sense to me. I thought it was a very dated saying I didn't understand 😅

In response to the Reptile conversation: in MK Conquest which was supposed to be connected to the movies they also had Reptile as a race of identical warriors so idk if this predates that or not but one way or the other this was something someone in creative established back then.

Yea, this movie was disappointing. After the first one, we hoped to have this be as good, but yea they dropped the ball hard on this one. It's probably good to watch it and riff on it for a laugh with friends on bad movie nights. That's the only way to enjoy it.

I have to ask & maybe you won't have an answer for this, before the one that came out last year there was supposedly another attempt to re-boot the franchise as I remember reading & this was back when she was still with WWE as a prominent champion, but apparently they had cast Trish Stratus as Sonya Blade. Is that Devastation or is this another movie that never saw the light of day?
I've never, ever heard of that, and a quick Google lead me to a post on a message board from 2004 stating that it was a completely unsubstantiated, most likely totally made up rumor.
It was going to be base on MK4, only reason it never materialize was cause they couldn't agree on a location for the film and the budget didn't cover much of the expenses. A majority of the original cast also couldn't return or can't due to travel conflict. Also MK is losing popularity at the time due to the dwindling arcade industry and the depart of one of the MK lead designer, John Tobias.
This is movie is awkward. My parents had just divorced. My mom started dating a black dude and he took me to see the movie. Basically Johnny got replaced with Jax lol

At 1:16:30, I am SO glad someone else thought Jax said "spit" instead of "split". Admittedly, I didn't know he said split until just now hahaha. I even watched this movie with my lady and my girlfriend and I love to watch bad movies together. I was probably very drunk on that viewing.

The only disappointing thing about Johnny Cage not just in Annihilation but the first film as well was that there were no moment where Cage would perform a Shadow Kick at all in those films. Annihilation did attempt to do one but it was a failed one and not really a legit one either, there's no MK game where Johnny Cage does a shadow kick in the air and Annihilation air shadow kick is not legit.
I remember seeing this with my younger brother and dad. I couldn't enjoy the movie cause of this kid that was talking throughout the movie and spoiling it.

i liked it so much that i remember EVERY line of dialogue (wasnt so hard tho).
couldn't care much about the dialogues, it had UMK3 fighters in it and fights was pretty awesome.
It's an objectively horrible movie, lol. But if you enjoy it, enjoy it. I know I do. It's okay that it sucks, hahaha
