Phil Flory did a super detailed build of this kit a few years ago using resin and brass turned.

Considering this is a 1/3 of the price of the Zoukei kit it's a hell of a bargain. I agree with you that Revell get an unfair bashing and I think sometimes can be model snobbery.
    Great review cheers Nige.

Very fair conclusive comparison at the end Nige. I have just got the Zouki kit but the later Revell versionof this kit was, for the money, good value if you know how to get over the quirks.
Merry Christmas to you and Jess.

Nice review of a very nice and affordable kit, I have this kit in my stash and plan on building it this winter. The Zoukie Mura kit represents an early Fw-190 variant (circa 1942) while Revells Fw-190 represents a much later variant (circa 1944). The Fw-190 A-8 version was more a fighter and the Fw-190 F-8 was more a fighter bomber, so it's very possible the control surfaces were metal covered and not fabric. The variants done on the Fw-190 airframe are nuts to say the least lol.

Hi Nigel, Thank you for the review. The idea that a plane can be displayed in flight without a pilot irritates me, it's not rare, I saw it many times. The kit itself is not bad, just old school.
I have a very old Me bf110 G from Revell also that I really like with radar antennas on the nose, I upgraded it with very nice Eduard p.e. interior, modified the canopy that was toy-like, etc. It's been on hold for a very long time because I have cold feet to paint the"spaghetti" camo like the one @ RAF Hendon museum. Have a merry Christmas and good continuation 👋🏻

Hello Nigel . Long time viewer first time subscriber . Saw this vid around 6 am . Prompted me to get a few of these from kingkit for the stash. Got revell d-9 with both tails. The hasegawa one. Planning on doing a big tail F-9 or A-9. so an affordable kit that can be zhuzhed up is the way to go for me. Almost sacrilege to cut up a ZM kit. BTW got a few PCM ta 152 c in the stash, so the revell f-8 is good for extra canopies (CAN 'O'PEAS) etc. ALL the best for Xmas and New Year 2024 . You're raising our modelling game. OldDrBob.

The revell kit is a great kit for the money and there is many aftermarket parts for it. It's up to you how far you want to go .but my favorite model companie is Borders Model the Fw190 is awesome They go together like a bandi kit .i had no problems with the Instructions at all I built five of these kits and have 4 more to go.now i know they don't have color call out I don't use any kit color call outs I do my own research I haven't used color call outs since I was 10 years old. But I haven't found any Borders model kits that wasn't a great kit .

I love Border kits, I love their plastic, I love the way the kits go together but I spent hours editing their Lanc instructions with missing parts not shown, incorrect build sequences and wrong part numbers. Sent the info they ignored it completely!!

The Fw 190A-series were pure fighters, B- and C- series were undeveloped projects, D-were the, "Long-nosed," inline engined fighters, E was unbuilt, F was the first ground-attack version (with bulged canopy), and G had reduced armament (typically only 2x20mm) but a strengthened airframe for heavier bombs or a torpedo.

Great review. I'm not a huge fan of revell kits honestly, but this is one of their better attempts. Joseph Choren (detail scale models) has a build video here and it shows that with some extra work it builds into an excellent replica of the real aircraft.

NIce review I think its great there is a choice for those that can afford the price point of SWS but for others its maybe not affordable to do this on a budget and as you say it looks great and will build up fine. I had a good laugh on this as I know exactly who the Revell basher is you referred to its one of the reasons I dont belong to his site any more. Like most modellers I think if Revell charged another £2 and made a decent tray and lid box it would be a game changer for them (Probably not even add much cost as the tray would be blank without artwork printing, maybe one day. Love the humour, reviews and builds and I've learnt so much from you since following you its a highlight of the week to see what you are up to. I think more manufacturers should send you product for review as yours are so fair and balanced. When I watch your reviews ita as if we were sitting next to each other in a pub and you brough tthe kit along for a chat, its a rare quality from the many channels out there. So happy for you that Jess celebrated her birthday and is with you for another xmas plus sounds well. Have a very merry xmas and a happy new year, looking forward to whatever you bring in 2024.

Brilliant comparison review Nigel. I have this kit in my stash and I have purchased a couple of aftermarket for it like the Eduard Brassin cockpit instrument and details and also their brass legs and resin as I read that part is weak. I agree I think revell get a bad deal sometimes I've built a few of their kits and enjoyed building them and learnt a lot with them they are good price, okay we know that the boxes aren't great and the sprues could be better packaged but they aren't bad. In comparison I recently bought the hobby boss Fairchild A10 thunderbolt 2 and it is has brilliant detail and very well packaged but I think the instructions aren't great compared to Revell. Thanks for your honesty as usual. All the best to you and Jess this Christmas 🎄👍

Thankyou for a very honest review Nigel, I know what you mean about Revell bashing and yes we do know by whom and yes I do think that he is rather unreasonable, especially as he champions another less than reputable kit manufacturer. KIts these days are rather expensive and as you say, stand two feet away and the differences are almost indiscernible, so you pays your money and takes your choice.

Thank you Nigel; your approach to comparison of distinctly different priced kits and your honesty about them is always appreciated. I have the Revell kit in the stash. For me, for now, the lower $$ kit price is fine to build and improve skills with. Perhaps once my skills develop I‘l invest in some higher priced ones.
Agree wholeheartedly the Revell side open flimsy box is beyond annoying but Revell seems bull headed or defiant or both by refusing to change them. There seems to be a good amount of part cleanup required that is more noticeable than with some other manufacturers, though it is a small price to pay to save some money.
Hope you had a special birthday celebration with Jess!

The lack of rivet detail, is realistic imo. The real thing has flush rivets, and as far as I understand it, were also puttied over, as with the Me. fighters. The wheelbays did have that curved panel separating the front of the 2 wheel bays. The gap between them was partially filled by a frame and a heavy diagonal strut that I assume supported the weight of the centreline bomb/droptank. You could still see through to the other side. This is up to the F8 at least. The ailerons ad elevator detail are actually quite to scale, with the real items being *very* taught and smooth, with very little evidence of rib tape at all, and just a slight raised line where the stitching protrudes. At least they are on the one hanging in the Imperial War Museum, and on the new built Flug Werk FW examples (I want one for my lawn)..

    Dear Nigel,
I was particularly interested in your views and also the comparison with the ZM. Your thoughts are absolutely fair.
It is notable that (on the surface of it anyway), the Revell is nicely put together. The details that separate good from average seem to be present.
It’s jolly kind of you to mention me at the end there- I will have something to add at the conclusion of my Fw190 project and was very pleased that the first German aircraft I tackled was this one. Progress has been uneventful so far!!
All the best to you and yours!!

Yours is an early boxing, the engine detail looks good, I built the most recent boxing and the detail had suffered, the engines cylinders had lost their sharpness, with the fins missing. The kit will go together well but the front end can be tricky to assemble with most of it suspended from the engine.

Thank you. and Merry Christmas sir. You have backed up something i always say, "If you really want that model, get the first release, it will be sharper". Tools get worn, they chip and the alignment pins/bearings wear giving heavy seam lines etc.

This kit and the A-8/R2 Stormbock version build up in to very nice models. There are a few niggles with the engine cowling and panel fit if you want it closed up, but over all they were well worth the price. I think I paid under £30 each when they both first came out.
