We may not know why yet, but with what Yasopp did to Bart's poor ship, one thing is clear-in order to become King of the Pirates, Luffy is going to have to go through Shanks. He may have saved his life by sending the giants to help him, but he's not gonna truly acknowledge him as Roger's successor without a fight. He may take the hat, but I don't think he'll acknowledge Luffy as a great pirate unless Luffy takes it back.
