I'm listing to The Fellowship and I can always find something that goes along with the story perfectly, like 5:24 Bilbo looking out of a window in Rivendell
Personally and this is purely my humble opinion but I prefer John Howe's illustrations over Alan's. Not bashing Alan's work or anything. They've both done great work for Tolkien's books, but I like John's work a little more.
I know what you mean, Howe paints more colourful and draws more details in regard to the creatures, facial traits and expressions and so on. But I must say that I prefer Lee´s landscapes, his trees are absolutely breath-taking for example. This is where he brings out more details. It seems Howe specialises a little more in the characters and Lee more in the landscapes, but that is only my impression.
Hello, Alan Lee would you like to draw artwork for the country of HEAVEN? Lord Of The Ring is a movie in HEAVEN... An idea I have for science fiction and fantasy movies... To bring them to LIFE! For exploring and for artistic people, and researchers THE JEDI and fighters and heavy metal rock star like ME, Sid Pirate, known as THE SITH military on the moon Telesto... As well as other military groups which each follow a sports league... THE UNION (Earth) being Fighting/Scary Movie/Comedy... But in the future will change to THE REBELLlON(first Mars military) after 6000 years... Changes to THE UNION... 70 total world's with different militaries... Thanks!

I think it is painted with an aquarelle(on 9999level) and acrylic for detailing.
just like frank fazzeta is the best conan illustrator so is alan lee when it comes to tolkien.
