  • A look at the film Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos. Based on an Alistair Gray novel, this film looks at the evolution of a woman with no memory, as she discovers sex, education, and controlling her fate. Against this we have an absurdist Frankenstein riff, which can be both funny and self-indulgent. This is a flawed, interesting film that need to be shortened a little for maximum impact.

Hi Peter. I’m also about to say a few words on this movie (as well as 9 other 2023 releases) and felt along similar lines to you. I got a lot of enjoyment out of it and loved the performances but it did feel overlong, especially in that final third. I know Stone has commented in interviews that she was a producer and so had control and willingness to do a lot of the sex scenes but nonetheless that side of things just felt a bit too repetitive after a while. But overall it deserves the praise and she is really great

Its an odd one as a film. Its very good but just has a few areas that don't quite come together, which is frustrating.
