Every first move by a country's leader will not be welcomed. The late Mr. Ong saw what a good transportation system in the likes of an MRT has and loaded with immense transforming powers. Today's Singapore owes her progress to this idea implanted in the heart of one man who dared to challenge the order of the day, without giving up upon immense opposition. Singapore has certainly become a leader in this particular aspect, in the region of Asia. See for yourself how many countries begin to emulate Singapore by building what they can call and label their own MRT. Rest in perfect peace, Ong Teng Cheong. Your work and vision have not been forgotten! I am just an outside observer but has great respect for a man gracing the history of a nation at a time like this.

President Ong was the Peoples President. Someone whom almost every Singaporean had voted for. We have not seen that happen after his term as president. A man who thought of the future and made the impossible happen during the time when the government thought otherwise. Nowadays there is really no real good leadership ....all are following one another. New people came but nothing changed for the better. Just maintaining status quo..... If Mr Ong had maintained status quo we wouldn't have had a train system in the first place. May he rest in peace. A man who deserved the highest regard in politics. A man who deserved a state funeral but was not given one. To the Peoples President....Mr Ong Thank you. Thank you for being different and standing up for us. The People.

Deep down I can't thank President Ong Teng Cheong enough. For someone like me who can't drive car, commuting by buses and taxis over long distances is simply not feasible due to slow speed (former) and high fare (latter).
Ong Teng Cheong advocated for MRT against the advice of a team of Harvard experts hired by Lee Kuan Yew, which said that buses are enough to serve a small island like Singapore.

Successive generations of Singaporeans owe the modern conveniences and affordances of MRT travel
to the vision, foresight, tenacity and perseverance of one man; Mr Ong Teng Cheong,
who overcame initial and fierce opposition from political heavier weights
to make his vision a reality to benefit all Singapore residents.
Of course, there needs to be eventual cabinet approval
and inter-ministry coordination and public support
not least an entire eco-system of engineers, technicians, etc. to test, maintain and upgrade the MRT operations.
If there's any wider lesson to be drawn from this:
especially for a resource-scarce tiny city-state with a small population base,
It's to continually develop the quality of human resources
from which quality of leadership and governance comes from.
To talent spot, develop, support and honor such leaders when they're alive
    To build up constructively
    and not tear down critically.
