"Skater XL is being poised as a platform but on console it still feels a bit too much like a prototype. Regular glimpses of promise appear when I operate within its limits and focus on managing its complex controls and earnest, realistic skateboarding, but ultimately it seems more like a skateboarding video tool than a fleshed-out game. It's faithfully dedicated to skating's Californian roots and - like real skating - it looks pretty slick when you edit out the misses, but without the PC's huge mod environment, I'd anticipate only serious skateboarders will stay on board here."

He specificaly says this for the Console version, and says that it is better on PC thanks to things like modding, so, i don't know what your perspective is, especelly since you do seem to enjoy it, but it seems justified rating for the console version at least.

Kinda hate that EA literally waited until THPS came back and this game was coming out to announce Skate. Would've been cool to have something fill the vacuum but now it feels like they're just chasing trends
Its gonna lead to a burn out for fans just like with Guitar Hero vs Rock band. I really hope it dosent come to that and all games can be successful and fun to play. The last thing I want is another 10 year gap cause EA and Activision wanna hop on trends I completely agree with you
The new EA Skate game is a year away at the least, will have plenty time with the THPS 1+2 remake before then.

Thats exactly what happened. EA noticed the hype of XL and Session and decided to show up and try to snag some of the skategame fans they have been ignoring for so many years

Playing it on the PS4 and its a ton of fun even with the emptiness and bugs, the controls and board physics are a game changer. I also have the same cons as the ones in the review, the bails/falls and overall character body physics can be improved, the lack of any other life/movement on the maps, multiplayer and over smoothness and polish of the game. Hopefully the devs will address mentioned issues with updates and patches, they seem to listen and respond to the community well, so i hope they patch the game to be smooth and complete in the near future.
Is it worth the $40? I’m just leaning more on buying cuphead haha
@@BounciestBen honest answer would be no, I was gonna get ghost of tushima but instead got skater xl, witcher 3 and another game on sale. I would say wait for a sale or for a few updates to hit the game 1st.

@@VSaccount Isn't that what a lot of actual boarding includes though? Most that are looking at this will probably have some history with skate. or THPS series and I'm guessing were hoping for a bit more of those elements added to the mix.
I've put over 90 hours into the game. It's honestly the most accurate representation of a sport I've played in a game and I skate. I get why this game is a 5 and I like Luke Reilly. But this is one of those games that has been praised by skaters for a reason . If it's not for you, get THPS or Skate 4, but this was described as flawed far more than it was niche, and I think there's going to be confusion between those two things
Yeah. I'm a real skater and I love this game to bits. I can play the same map for ages. I just need stats mod for console and more maps. And I will be happy
And the maps are super fun to skate around, this is a great Simulator. It brings the feeling of Landing a trick IRL
Have you tried Session yet? I feel like it's more polished in a number of ways than SXL (but still far from complete), and had a better feel in general. Looking forward to the progression of both games.

Ben Greer the only thing session did better in my opinion its the gravity settings, but the skate physics and responsiveness really need a work on
its like a medium learning curve but once you get the tricks down the game is a lot of fun. If you were the type of person to just roam around skating everything in skate 1-3 then this is the game for you

I dont even skate but for some reason love skate games. this game was hard at first took me around 5hrs of play time to master the controls and now I love it. got over 100+ hours on it now.
Too shred is the objective, truly for skaters.
Me that’s the best part, I don’t wanna be bothered with cutscenes and objectives, I just wanna explore and skate. on the old skate games I played the campaigns sure, but after the initial playthrough I never played the story again but still play the games to this day just to skate around

I have to admit. IGN is definitely stepping their game up when it comes to reviews. Feels like he truly did take the time to really play the game and give it a chance before slapping a score on it.
That or this game is lucky to have Luke Reilly to review the game who is pretty much the most popular reviewer in IGN here.

Slayer 420 there is, but there’s not many songs so you’ll hear them all about 4 times in an hour or playing. I just load up a Spotify playlist now instead. Disappointed a bit

and for skaters not like you too. XL has no real competition imo. string puppet physics, not baked in animations.
When it’s on sale for like $15 it’s not worth $40.
It's challenging & that's what I love about it, I'm just waiting for multiplayer to free skate with others
Completely agree with this review . Wish there was a story or something to it just to make it a bit more interesting. But I love being able to have your own style in the game like catching the board with either foot and stuff . Great review
For anyone who actually skateboards this a dream come true. I love the game
the game is cool but its boring. Theres nothing to do besides just learn tricks. As someone who skated a lot growing up a Main catch of skateboarding is Community the liveliness of it all doing tricks with your friends or competing against them. This game doesn't even give you NPCs to work with. Its quiet and feels lonely quick I give it a 4/10 that 4 is mainly because the control scheme is really interesting.

@@YungSpydaMonk the controls click they aren't perfect but they work well. I just feel like this is missing a lot of what should be in the game. I get the game devs had a vision and they probably excelled at delivering what they wanted but for me it's lacking.

Agree. Did most of the achievements in a single sitting. They were more fun than the actual ingame "challenges".
Gameplay-wise going for a nice line and then recording with the camera tools is still fun, but thats all the game has. 🤔

Nothing can touch the original EA Skate, Skate 2, and Skate 3. The “flick-it” physics... they just nailed it. THPS became cartoony and ridiculous after the first 3 games. Nothing can touch Skate 2 and 3. Wish they’d bring it over to the new consoles or VR.

agree with this review. the controls are indeed innovative but the entire package seems more of a tech demo than a complete game. There are no actual game modes to be seen except for move tutorials, and there's even no exit game option on the PC.
Can we really even call the controls innovative? It’s just a slightly tweaked, worse version of skate.
the exit button is esc. idk why they opted for that rather than having a button in the pause menu like 99% of games do.

@@MrSiloterio honestly the game officially launched but it still just feels like an ea game since there's no story, there's nothing to do but the braindead easy challenges that are effectively tutorials and do all the achievements. The average player would bow out if they stuck with it to do all the challenges.

This has been my exact experience. Very cool concept, executed beautifully, but this aint a game nor is it worth the money.

It’s worth the money I sank like 100 hours before 1.0 was released but console is lacking substance without mods and maps.

Avatar Nang you guys haven’t even tried learning the controls yet! it will take you 20 plus hours to master the new controls so don’t knock it before you’ve even really tried it. Learn to skate at hudland, Spend lots of hours mastering the controls.
Once you get the controls of the board and realise you have total control of both feet it’s endless amounts of fun. Better if you used to or know how to skate. I spent over 100 hours just with a few maps and no game before 1.0 the game is epic just need more content and a few more updates. But it will get there :) happy skating my people peace ✌️

This review is WAY better than I expected. I bought this game last night(PC) and played for about an hour the controls were great they weren't perfect but that's expected when a new control scheme is made. Besides the controls not being perfect this game really has poor bail physics (mentioned in video) and no real life to it. There's nothing to do besides tricks over and over and over again, Which I get as a skater its all practice and going out and doing it over and over again until you get the trick down. However IRL you have a community or friends to do tricks with, to compete, or just show of too this game lacks that. It doesn't have NPCs or even multiplayer for you to enjoy skating with others. No real missions or quests, Nothing besides the trick things that feel like extended tutorials. I would definitely buy this game again if It went through a No Mans Sky type of overhaul I don't hate the game but its void of what makes skateboarding so amazing in my eyes and that is a living community. IGN gave this a 5/10 I personally would give this a 4/10. Love the concept but am not happy with the outcome. I hope people see this video before purchasing because It can really open your eyes on what the game is an expensive demo.

It’s literally a game made by skaters for skaters. It’s not for the masses like Tony Hawk or Skate. Both those games are great in their own right. If you like skating keep playing it, it will get more fun the more time you put in it. Skate was “hard” at first because it was different then Tony Hawk so keep that in mind..
Or at least for people that apreciate skating, I don't even skate but I've enjoyed the game for the past 6 months, I think the main issue is the expensive price tag and the lack of content in the console release

This game was aimed at people that skateboard, and I feel like a reviewer that skates is necessary here. I think this game deserves at least an 8/10, it achieves everything it set out to have.

No story mode or multiplayer, very few maps, glitches galore, graphics that look worse than Skate 3 and with a $40 price tag. I can't see how 8/10 could be justified.
If their intention was a life-like skateboarding game, they nailed it. Especially when, just like in real life, you bail and respawn at a preset spot instead of where you actually were; or how I can't get off my board once I start skating. It's so real !

I really liked this reviewer! Also agree with him and the score is imo on point. I never really liked the insane pop height this game seems to have - and the physics overall seem too impactless and floaty. Been playing Session, and it's pretty rough around the edges too - but the core gameplay feels much more solid I think. I don't know why Skater XL rushed for console retail launch with the game at that state...
Session is worse. I have hundreds of hours in both.
You can't compare session because it's just not up to par.
And skater xl at that state? As if its bad right now? There are hardly any bugs that youll run into constantly. You should play it before saying much of anything.
Closest youll get to real skating. Been skating 14 years and skater xl is hands down THE skate game.

Session is still alpha, sxl is the final game... session feels way more real in my opinion. And jeah it hast its flaws, but they get ironed out over time. What sxl delivers with v1 is a shame. I had great hopes for it. And i skate over 18 years and have to disagree that sxl is the skateboarding game. But jeah, my opinion. I used to make maps for sxl in the early days when i had still hopes for the game.
@@Pnwrat I mean looking at this video to me the game really doesn't look like it should be a 1.0 final/ready release. I didn't say the game is bad - but I prefer Session. If you like Skater XL and enjoy it that is great - genuinely wasn't my intention to bash on the game or anything. Session is still in it's early stages and I do think their development is annoyingly slow but I have hopes. But if Session dies there's still Skate 4 happening so that's probably something we can all look really forward to 🙂

Well, that also depends on why you’re even playing. The THPS games were great for its arcade style progression, maps, soundtrack, and the amount of fun you can have playing with a buddy. Same can be said about the Guitar Hero games; they’re just games. With that said, I haven’t played this, but it looks like crap, 2/10

We need more control options like session we also need a quick fix patch for the laggy character menu and yea the game needs more content

@Sapendo_Yen It is content, This game targeted a specific audience and people went into it expecting a skate 3 successor. The point is to find a spot and skate it, learn it. Get cool lines. There is endless amount of time that can be spent playing this game if you go at it like you would any other real life skate activity
Weirdly cohesive review. A welcome suprise!! Been playing Session and while this has my interest I think I'll stick with the former and keep failing up :) if this game goes to 30 bucks I'll cop it

This new version of Skater XL feels more like an UPDATE than a full game RELEASE. Although I like the new maps, clothes and challenges, this doesn't justify the price increase at all. I enjoy the game a lot, have been playing it for almost a year now, made and still make some maps for the community, but we have to agree that SXL is far from being considered a complete game.
Until now Skate 3 was my favorite skate game. After watching this, Skate 3 remains my favorite skating game and I wish my ps3 was still working

This game really hits you with the reality of how hard it is to pull of these tricks IRL, and that is what makes it fun. I just really need some story content to keep me going, or online multiplayer to enjoy with friends.

Skate 3 is still the best skating game
I really enjoy this game, it has amazing controls. I don't disagree with the score though, but I do think people that buy this game need to realize you aren't getting Skate or THPS. It's a skate sim where you skate, literally that's it. There is nothing more. No story, nothing. Just skate, film stuff, learn tricks, etc. If you want that, then I say get the game. It's super fun. It does need improvements for console though. The frequent screen tearing and my skater popping too early or doing a shuvit instead of an ollie when I'm doing the motion for an ollie can get really annoying. I'm here to support Easy Day though and I can't wait to see more content and updates brought to the game!

I wasn't feeling it at first but after spending more time with it I've come to play it for hours on end and that hasn't happened in years. The joy I get from hitting simple spots is very satisfying. Something that I could easily get on skate 1-3 like inward heel to overcook takes time and patience on this. I'd just like more customization like beards
I have been skating for 6 years and I’ve put about 120 hours into skater xxl, this game is so extremely satisfying to real skaters it glosses over all the bugs and stuff, also the whole replay editor is a very important feature that he completely glossed over, I have over 150 replay files on my computer and making edits of tricks I would do on spots I’ll never actually get to go to like Wallenberg is super fun if you actually skate.

You can also abuse the push mechanic by spamming left foot and right foot often times allowing you to push more in a shorter space than designed
If this game was 100% free, then it would be fun to play while you’re waiting those 5 minutes for your spouse to get ready so you two can go out. That’s the only way I could see this game being worth it, 5 minutes of play.
It's obviously heavily flawed but the core mechanics are incredibly strong. It can be extremely frustrating to get a line or even just a single trick correctly, but that's the magic of skateboarding. For me, it's pretty rewarding to actually notice my progression of getting better every day (at least since PS4 launch day). Even if mods on console aren't implemented (but bug fixes are), even just adding new community maps regularly would keep me quite content for a while. This game has huge potential, I'm stoked for its future.

I love the game, it's a lot of fun. Only thing that bums me out a little is the lack of life. I just want the option of random NPCs and moving cars. Also Multiplayer S.K.A.T.E.

Yea serious skateboards are going to love this. There is a slight learning curve but if you know how to do tricks in real life then the tricks will come naturally. Beside the glitches and unwanted Ollies this is the skate game I've been dying for.

Even if you love this game on console, this review is completely fair, Easy Day is a sad excuse for dev team that can’t implement basic bug fixes, they’ll rely on modders for everything.

This is the type of game I will wait to buy used so I can return it in 7 days and get my money back. Which is very disappointing because I was so excited and wanted to buy it day of release. But this is an unfinished game and I will not spend $40 on an incomplete game.
Its worth 40 bucks. The game is fun its a solid 7/10 in my opinion!

The reviewer could not have said it better. Overall the game does not feel complete but if you're a skater and can enjoy just freestyling around the map you will like it.
The skate mechanic itself is LITERALLY all the game has. I honestly feel a bit insulted after dropping $40 on this dissapointing title.

the fact this game is even on this stage is amazing, real skateboarders making games about skateboarding is a win, and we should support it no matter some small flaws

If you're a skateboarder or used to try and play EA Skate games realistically this game is for you. I've not put it down since release. So much fun cruising and trying to get tricks. Its hard at first but it really is amazing. The replay value for me is endless!

Just play Skate 3. It holds up surprisingly well and their "stick flick" controls are much more intuitive without sacrificing realism the way Tony Hawk games always did and always will.

Video Game Intro's Endings and Trophy Guides why would you watch a review after playing the game? The whole reason why you would watch a review is to know if you want to buy the game.
Just by looking at its core element there is no fluidity in the game looks really stiff

@@chucke2319 also the gane is so far from "stiff" hundreds of hours in this game. Its flowy and smooth. Session is stiff and just not nearly up to this standard so far.
Im baffled nobody has pointed out that the graphics of this game looks cheaper than a mobile game
I’ve never got as bored as quickly as I have with this “game”. I say game with quote marks as, to me, this is not a game. I get that it’s going for more of a simulation vibe than arcadey fun, but some challenges would be nice (not just do this trick here, now do this trick here, now do this trick here - super boring, super repetitive). This is more of an experience than a full game. It doesn’t look finished either - some of the lighting looks garbage, and with no other people in the environments there’s no atmosphere. I’m so disappointed.
Zachary Scott I bet you can’t even play man takes many hours to master these controls and when you do they are fresh. You obv never skated. Fair enough it’s not your game.
You can skate free and just learn to skate it’s epic yes the challenges are shite I agree but that’s not the game really the game your supposed to just learn to skate and have fun and film lines. Be patient it will get better.

I get what he's saying. I have the same problem too. I've been playing EA's Skating Trilogy for the past 10 years. Skater XL is fun but to a certain extent. The game just feels empty. I understand that it's a pure Skating game and yeah but still. The game has this incomplete vibe to it and it's not worth the price tag it has.
Interested. But I kind of just wish they would remake the SKATE games with updated graphics. SKATE 1, 2 and 3 completely nailed it for me.

As someone who bought this game , I think this review is pretty on point. Idk about PC but console Skater XL just seems a really buggy and unfinished demo. I like the idea of “Just Go Skate” but a campaign, more pros, and etc. would make this game great for me
On PC with mods in my opinion this game is perfect
It’s a great game if you really love skating games and want to spend time learning the tricks..you have to go for it..i agree there are very few maps and there isn’t anything apart from free roam..but the amount of hours you are gonna spend on it makes it worth it..

Since I have put 300 hours into Skate 3 and just skate around making replays of my tricks this sounds right up my alley.
Once you get used to it, the controls make so much sense. PC is definitely the better version since we get to use all of the mods for more advance tricks and movement control. I have a feeling by the end of the year, it'll feel more solid than it does right now. There's several planned updates.
