What are your thoughts on Christians engaging with stories like Wicked? Do you think it’s harmless entertainment, or should we be more cautious? Let’s discuss!

So glad I’m no longer that type of Christian and I can enjoy life without pointless fear and shame. Wicked was just a beautiful story. She’s so scared she didn’t even watch it and feels like she should have an opinion. She’s not even saying her name right. I encourage Christians to watch it… the actual story has a very beautiful message. ❤

Magic is also central to Narnia and Lord of the Rings, written by two prestigious Christians who represented biblical values in their stories. That's fantasy! We need to stop seeing everything that is not "gospel" labeled as "devilish". It's the dualist philosophy that comes from greek and Roman values, and actually opposes Christianity. It comes from Plato, not Jesus.

I respect your opinion, but what you're saying is toxic.
Wicked isn't just the story of two witches. It's a coming of age story. Elphaba has started to come into her own. All her life, people in her life have been scared by her physical appearance; her father has seen her as less than. In fact, he blames her for the death of his wife having given birth to Nessa.
Elphaba has this strong sense of justice. Her mentor, Doctor Dillamond, has been threatened along with the other Animals. She wants to do good for them. In her head, partnering with the Wizard is the key to doing so. However, she sees through his veneer & decides to take off on her own.
    It's a powerful story.

A few things: 1) I don't know if they changed the pronunciation in the movie but her name is El fuh ba a name they came up with to honor the original wizard of Oz author L frank Baum
    2) the idea behind the wizard and glinda not being hailed as heros and the wicked one being sympathetic is not to call good evil and evil good it's to show how people aren't always as they seem. The bible is full of stories of how the same people who were good and chosen by God turned around and did a lot of bad things because they are human and the heart of man is wicked. The story of the woman caught in adultery is a story about guys that according to their society were good and the woman was deserving of punishment and Jesus points out that the guys weren't really being that honorable and sympathizes with the woman
    3) there's a movie, a musical, and a book. I've never seen the movie have seen the musical and tried to read the book. I am not trying to say that the story is really wholesome and godly (especially the book that felt the r rated version of the musical and made me feel so uncomfortable I had to stop reading.) I just think if you're going to make arguments about the story they should be informed and make logical and biblical sense.

Totally agree. As J.K. Rowling said in Harry Potter, "We've all got light & dark inside of us."

Thank you for sharing this! I was drawn into the occult when I was way too young, I experienced things that scare me to think of now, and I'm so glad that I've been baptized and now follow Jesus. Do be careful about what you show your kids, it really does matter.

Why do we necessarily think that either side should represent righteousness?
I don't think it necessarily teaches that alfaba is good, but that evil creates evil

Im sorry, you said this movie switches the narrative of good and evil? Gelinda isn't evil; she's spoiled, self centered, and does what could be considered good things but that dont fix the problems at hand. Elphaba is shown to have her own motives for doing things. She causes harm while trying to do good. The whole movie shows how the way you, as a person, are looked at by people shapes how your actions are viewed; how our own prejudices shape the lens in which we view the world. Humans are complexed, this movie shows how anyone is capable of doing a good or bad deed. You said you havent seen this movie. I respect that. Maybe look more into it before trying to demonize it though?

This is sooooo good. I have tons of friends who make fun of me because my mom has never allowed me to watch things with witches in it, so in turn when I have to choice I still choose not to because these “harmless” things shape us and like she said desensitizes us to evil to the point where we cannot recognize when things are evil. I wish she had posted this sooner because I went to see it right before she posted and I thought it was about the wizard of oz. I thought it was based on a good classic but it really wasn’t.

Thanks for sharing @annamartin7602. Yes, ‘the desensitization of evil’ was exactly the point l was trying to get across. As an Ex-New Ager and former psychic medium l know first hand that the spirit world is real. Demonic deception and oppression is real. As Christians who study the Bible we know that there is a spiritual battle going on beyond the physical world we experience with our 5 senses. Sometimes it’s easier to go along with pop culture trends even though we’re called to walk the narrow path. I’m guilty of doing this myself, but l am striving to walk more closer with the Lord this year by being more mindful of the sources of entertainment l consume. 😔

I respect your opinion, but the witchcraft wasn't the main focus. This just happened to be the story of two witches. Frankly, it could be any two girls. Neither understood the other in the beginning, but form an unlikely friendship. Elphaba has such a strong sense of justice for not just her mentor, Doctor Dillamond, but the rest of the Animals in Oz.
She believes partnering with the Wizard will solve everything, but she sees through his veneer. That's where Defying Gravity comes from. She doesn't want anyone holding her back from who she knows she needs to become.
I see this as a story of friendship, of doing the right thing, standing up for what one believes in, & not letting anyone dull your shine.

I have a question. I got when you said that practicing magic is detestable and showing your kids can open doorways to witchcraft and evil practices in their life, but what if you’re a young adult and don’t have any interest in such and are strict and firm on not practicing witchcraft, can’t I still watch anything related to magic? Cause I understand why people wouldn’t watch it cause the real life actresses are witches and theres some real spells used in it, but there’s some shows with magic that I wanna watch for example an anime called witch hat atlier which is coming out soon. I wanna watch it but it has witches in it. Can I still watch it while I have the knowledge that witchcraft is evil and do not have a desire to participate in it whatsoever??
