Karl Kani: Take Away All of Nike's Black Athletes, Where Would They Be?

- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- Iconic designer Karl Kani in this segment of his interview with VladTV speaks about the relationship between quality and price point in clothing, the differences amongst brands like Polo, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, and the effect athlete endorsements have on sports brands like Nike and Adidas. As he says, "Take away all the black athletes from Nike, where would they be?"
I will be supporting Karl Kani when he comes back with new material.
This is why I love Lavar Ball. You want to use my son's but don't want to partner up? I'm starting my own thing.
More like "if anybody is going to use my sons for financial gain it's going to be me!"
@caramel king200000 In the sense of using other people's talent for his own financial gain whether they want him to or not, then yes, he is just like Wall Street.
AirunDevon Exactly genius move
And charging ppl $500. Fuck outta here. Now what shaq and Marbury did is another story
Now if his Son does become a hot super star he should go down in price. Most will just go to fakes it he stays at $500 a set. Just price match Nike and become their equal.
Karl Kani is a genius and is highly intelligent! I enjoy watching his interviews. This guy is my new role model! Now to Vlad: I rock with dude the longway, but I wish he would stop with the interruptions. Not allowing people to fully answer the questions just to prove he knows more or as much has become toxic to some of these great interviews!
Quartz you made an excellent observation. Vlad thought he had a great point about nike but Karl destroyed his point. Its black talent that made nike successful not its technology.
I understand Quality cost but when I see a White Versace V-Neck for 400 that's just ridiculous. There's brands that use quality and their name to drive the price up 10x what it should be
Your paying for the prestige and also the brand.
Supreme Bape says the "Supreme Bape" isnt that ironic
Buy a dress shirt $20 jacket for $40 from h&m then go buy a Burberry dress shirt for $350. I bet, that Burberry dress shirt will last you years longer than that h&m one and that h&m jacket ain't going to last you as long as that Ralph Lauren. You invest and buy classic pieces from designer labels cuz they will last and you wasyed your money on some trendy shit at h&m that will be out of style in a year
whats ironic? I spend hella money on clothes I have no problem spending it.
Bobby Brooks If it was all based on "name" only these brands wouldn't last. Quality and price point is real. It's why a Lexus and a Hiyundia are a different price point
Speaking of high quality, that shirt look comfortable asf
Shirt look like a blanket.
Karl Kani stumped vlad on the importance of black athletes. I loved it. At the end of the day Nike is no different then Adidas n under armour. Black swag is what people are buying.
Derrick Barnett check dr jays website with the white guys wearing streetwear. No swagga at all! Puts me of the damn clothes. Stick to suits dudes.
☝🏾Hate when people leave comments that could be worth something but make no sense at the same time . Tough read
Black folks have no Swag. True Swag = Power.... the swag you talking about keeps you buying and buying but not creating anything permanent
This doesnt make sense. Your saying whites dont have swag but all black athletes are wearing clothes made by white people.
@@asage5801 do you know what "swag" is?...
I love watching Karl Kani interview's, you always can pick up business knowledge
that's why i always tune in haha
Quincy Wood he is a quite power house.
True
You can't have high quality & low prices, but you can have low quality & high prices
CJ Rich nicely put because that's really what's going on anyhow
I agree
Ha!
Word!
Ralph Lauren owns U.S.polo...the biggest mindfuck ever...
We are the only race who can't put aside our petty differences in order to work together and uplift ourselves. For THAT, there is no one else to blame.
Do u think all other groups are
100 %friends with each other ? NO ! I agree that black people should work togther more thoo
Really? You can't blame slavery at all? The divide and conquer strategem? Willie Lynch? I agree that we have to take responsibility, because no one else is, but saying we have no one else to blame absolves an entire race of their crimes and imposes guilt on the victims. It's victim blaming. I'll say it again for clarity. We don't need to dwell on it, because that's counter productive, but we definitely don't need to blame ourselves. We just need to overcome.
Helen West stupid comments bitch
Look at the Republicans. Talk about move as a unit.
I always said we’re the most hated but the most imitated race ever!!!👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Famous blacks should be supporting Karl Kani all day every day
You all that are talking about Nike soccer forget before Michael Jordan Nike was a middling company. And, without the money Jordan has brought to Nike they don't have the money to invest in soccer.
kamala80 fax
kamala80 Hey my brother Nike was not really a middling company they were at the bottom in the 80's brands like converse's Cons, Pony, Lotto, coq le sportiff, Puma, Diadora's, Adidas, Reebok, Gucci, Valentino, Bally's were well over nike and Fila being over all other brands was at the top of the food chain was considered high end luxury brand they were so expensive back then especially Fila velour tracksuit which was also very expensive and hard to find, mostly mob figures and drug dealers could afford to wear then. The only person that continued to help Nike thrive was John McEnroe who was rising tennis player who was popular, as was tennis in the 80's there was no Jordans for 80 to 84 and his first 2 shoes which came out in 85 and 86 weren't that big at the time until his 3rd shoe came out and he won mvp and defensive player of the year in 88 and did a commercial with a then young spike lee. Back in the 80's everybody wanted to be different so that's why so many sneaker companies were able to flourish back then you wanted to have a hot shoe no one else knew about or something no one else really had to be different. Now everyone races to get the same shoe an flock to one or two brands, shits different now. Always remember other companies had their foot on Nikes neck until they got Jordan and he started to rise.
Thanks, wittyexquisite. I'm 37. I know a bit of sneaker history too. I remember my homie Nolan had a pair of Jordan 1s when we were in kindergarten; that was 1985. I remember when we could buy Jordan 1s, 2s, and 3s on sale when the new models were coming in. Jordan hype really didn't start until the 11s.
And, you didn't mention anything about Troop and British Knights. A lot of brands put out good products in the 80s.
But Michael Jordan wasn't a sneaker designer graphics expert or promotional expert . Nike is the glue that brings all these things together .im sure Mike wouldn't complain about signing to nike
@Andre Benitez Michael Jordan did not want to sign to Nike in the beginning he wanted to sign to converse or Adidas cause that's what he grew up wearing watch his interview Nike was small upcoming brand that gave him alot more money then those other brands did cause the other brands were already established and, nike gave him a better deal on the creativity side as far picking the shoes after the second shoe Jordan was planning to leave Nike because he felt the shoes didn't represent him like he wanted, they brought in Tinker Hatfield to get him to stay Tink made the Jordan 3 which had everyone sold on Jordans and there after, if you remember Jordan's 1 and 2 where band from the nba cause they violated nba regulation rules so everytime he wore them he was fined $5,000 dollars which was a good bit of money back then which nike paid for him an they used that for promotion. Nike didn't do shut it was all about Tink he created the best Jordans of our time he had nothing to do with nikes glue or whatever
What If the top black athletes went to an HBCU...?
My son will.
I would love to see that but the ncaa will still making billions off of them!!
I mentioned the same thing in a sports thread last wk when i saw a frmr fsu qb go to hampton
Damn bro. I always thought about that but we are so brainwashed/ whitewashed we dont get it. ESPN, ABC, FOX SPORTS would have to give HBCU'S billions to showcase black athletes who spurned the Division 1 to keep it with our own folks.
@@SuperCarter326 definitely. It would be a major Financial boost for HBCU schools who are already struggling. But at the same time it would take a concerted effort with multiple families that are in tune with the possible cultural impact that blue-chip athletes going to HBCU schools would create. It would take families that are willing to forgo some of the immediate benefits of going to large programs. And honestly I think the best bet would be trying to do this in basketball as opposed to football. The roster numbers are much higher for football and basketball has the March Madness Tournament. I think that the potential for a star leading HBCU team in basketball to make a run in the tournament would be greater while requiring fewer Star level players then it would take in football. On top of that HBCU schools in football play in the FCS so they don't have the opportunity to play on the big time televised bowl games. And some of the schools don't even play in the FCS football tournament. So once again I'd like to see this attempted especially in basketball since the impact could be felt a little sooner and with a higher visibility.
Take all of the black athletes from Nike and they'd be Fila.
But Fila have nicer shoes than Nike, anyway...
@@michaelangelotaylor8th my point exactly!
@@mosl2te ahhh okay, I gotcha now...cool 😎
Lmao Saucony
@@mosl2te How ??? You mean those bulky Filas that are in style right now that are a rerelease from the 90's ???
Those shoes will not stand the test of time. If that's what you are referring to those theb maybe it's fitting given that God knows who brought them back in style. They are horrible !! I think those ugly yeezys that look like Filas are what started that trend.
Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson set the standard for Nike.
And Charles Barkley
Facts 💯
True
@@socc6991 ain't nobody black buying nike because of Charles Barkley.
@@derricknregina Although Barkley didn't have the same impact as Jordan (no one has), his shoes still made Nike a rack of money. If they didn't they wouldn't have released 4 or 5 shoes using his name. I had several friends that couldn't wait for the next Barkley's were released.
Damn this came out of nowhere but I’m glad it pop up
You can? ..You can.
You can't? ..uhhh You can't.
You cannot? ..You can't.
You can? ..You can't.
d. bankhead yep. Caught that
Lol
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Yeah I caught that too 🤔😏
Lavar Ball Is trying to give Black athletes the blue print ....but as usual we have a hard time listening!
It's because of his mouth.
Take away Black customers away from ANY major businesses in Amerikkka and that business wouldn’t last 5 years
This is a nice interview! Karl Kani is definitely someone we should support more! Thanks for sharing! Peace and Blessings to all!
What if the best athletes attended only hbcus?
BTW someone needs to educate them on the fact that US Polo Association has been around since 1890 while Polo by Ralph Lauren came in 1971! So if anything Ralph Lauren stole their idea!
CHAPS=COULD'VE HAD A POLO SHIRT..
Lol...
Booooo! That's wild funny 😂
I used to buy Nike everything but nowadays aside from their clothing I really don't like their stuff. I find New Balance, Asics and Diadora make superior sneakers.
heck yeah..New Balance is probably one of the most comfortable shoes to run in
kamala80 cuz your getting old, dont trip it happens to the best of us im 35 but refuse to by new banalace
Shooter, LOL!! Man I broke my ankle a few months back and since I can walk again all I've been rocking is NBs, Asics, and retro Diadoras. My ankle and foot feels better in them. I can't mess with the Nike footwear like talking about anymore.
+kamala80 asixs..diadoras..new balance..asics..brooks..le coq sport..karhu..shiit even saucony..runners is whats sup comfy & fly..cant go wrong
kamala80 Don't forget Saucony... Ohh my... Way so comfortable than these expensive jordans, nikes etc...NB, Diadora, Asics.. Love those too
QUALITY CLOTHING MEANS
BEING ABLE TO WASH YOUR CLOTHES IN A WASHING MACHINE AND NOT HAVE YOUR CLOTHING SHRINK UP ON YOU.
ITS NOT ABOUT THE PRICE
COME ON MANE
P
@smoothcollected WELL I AM NOT PAYING NOBODY TO CLEAN CLOTHNG THATS NOT COMPLICATED TO CLEAN NEITHER. WE ARE TALKING 2019 NOT THE FUCKIN EGYPTIAN DAYS
A lot of people associate designer with quality and nowadays majority of the times is now quantity
If Jordan would have chose a different brand. Nike would be nothing.
Come on man you can't believe that. No disrespect but how old are you? And I don't mean that to patronise you I mean that to say Nike was already a big brand before they even had Nike Airs. And when they dropped Nike Airs they were certified number one and that was long before they ever sold Jordans.
@@cnsmooth I'm 31, and Nike would still exist but it wouldnt be that big
@@144Souldier Im 39 and its debatable. Whilst I think Jordans definitely made a big cultural impact and boosted their profile I think people forget how impactful the Nike Air technology by itself was. They have a number of shoes that aren't linked to any personalities that were/are as big or nearly big as Jordans. Airmax90s, 95, Tns, Flights.
I almost look at Jordans as their own brand so I'm not trying to say their irrelevant to Nikes succcess. I also feel this who culture vulture argument is a bit unfair. Nike make sports shoes. Basketball players are predominately black. If Nike only make basketball shoes and targeted the black community people might have an argument but they don't they have shoes for every sport you can think of and it would be weird if they didn't also make basketball shoes. It was lucky coincidence that this all happened not some nefarious plan to ride black culture, which probably did happen later on down the line.
As a kid I really thought that All Nike’s was Jordan’s 😂
Stop talking more than the person your interviewing!!!
Exactly!! Karl Kani is a legend
Yes! Vlad should just interview himself.
I still want some Karl Kani boxers smh I wanna bring the trend back since polo and hilfiger are played out
Polo played out? U smoking bro,, chill...
Jus bought more Tommy boxers da other day I don’t follow trends playboy I am The Wave
shout out to karl kani & his success..he is a humble intelligent guy..a great inspiration & role model for the younger generation..
humble? You call that nigga HUMBLE??? AHAHAHHAHAH
why does vlad have a drum kit in the back?
Rim shots...
Bring those Jean suits back they are dope
I like this guy. Even telling you how marginal cost of production works!
Lots of knowledge here. Pointing out that fashion is 80% marketing and without the visual branding there all pretty much selling the same shit.
I think there is (or at least used to be) one company in Italy that made all the jeans for the italian labels, all the diffusion stuff. All the same marginal cost to produce, just different levels of marketing that make you pay 100 dollars for one, and 300 dollars for another.
Coffee table magazines that would be worth 100's of dollars each if they were real publications. But they are just adverts for brands. Its probably the biggest hustle out there.
And I like the way he shot down the fly knit stuff, as if no one else can make whatever nike make. Yet they are all made in the same factories and the bootlegs are pretty much the same as well.
I’m Puerto Rican and had a sick Karl Kani sweater it was sick signature
While I understand what he is saying having markups of 2, 3, 4, 5, 600% has nothing to do with recouping costs. Always remember something only costs what you are willing to pay for it, which is why the their are t-shirts that cost $400, and bags that cost over $100,000 or shoes that costs hundreds of dollars. They don't cost anywhere near that to make, but they know people will pay that and more. Now what he was saying about visibility and societal value, is very accurate. i.e. Gucci and Jordans (which is still don't get the fascination)
Ralph Lauren is in a class of it's own. It classy and timeless. Most likely will always be around.
BBB on the rise.
HipHopR&BLover Jon you're on the rise, beautiful
They need to level out the price first
HipHopR&BLover Jon Big Broke Ballers?
BBB
That comment didn’t age well lol
Karl kani got crazy 👀 smart man though ✊🏾
I wish Karl Kani would launch a line of clothing like H&M or Forever 21. Those clothes line (H&M/Forever 21) are designed and tailored for average white kids (no pun taken).
I myself purchased clothes from the clothes line mentioned above, but sadly the clothes were tight fitting, designs were plain and cheap and you can wash them, but don't dry them.
Kani needs to launch both an Urban and casual wear for men of color to rock something different.
Kanye tried it, but the designing of the clothing looked cheap and felt hipster like!
VLAD be on his grind keep it up bro !!
I'll rock some Karl Kani .. let me know when you get that NYC store up and running
I can't wait to wear karl kani I always love that style
One of my favorites brands from high school days
That thumbnail was perfect for the title
Karl Kani got a mean side eye
extremely smart brotha
Never heard of him but jus googled his brand. Sht def hard. Ima def cop sumn. I used to sport Coogi and LRG hard in hs
Karl Kani keeps it real, that’s real talk right there!
Wow, I can’t believe the genius Karl Kani agreed with USPA
It’s not piggie backing Ralph Lauren, it’s actually the official brand of the Sport Polo🤦♂️
Actually Ralph Lauren stole his concept from them, US polo Assa has been around since 1890!!!!
That hoodie signature sweater was on point!
For me I buy Nike and it has nothing to do with what sports people there is. They make a damn good shoe that Air Max and all their air pockets Souls are legendary with or without any kind of athlete backing it. Their name their font their logo is simple like Bart Simpson. Compared to other brands of shoes it's silly to think they couldn't succeed on their own with nobody ever being endorsed. Nikes hot since day one. That's like saying would Adidas be anything without Run DMC that's just a silly question. Who does K-Swiss have to thank or lotto or british knights? Those shoes were major in the city they were very big in the hip hop community. But that's primarily because those brands somewhere along the line suffice to let their brand sell in a buy-one-get-one-free store like mr. Alan's.
Nike wasn't hot since day one bro
Do some research fam
RALPH LAUREN PURPLE LABEL AINT I FRESH AS I CAN BE MADE IT THREW MY SITUATION AINT I BLESSED AS I CAN BE? - TI
I'm glad he's making a come bk! His clothes I thought was dope, hope he make it even better and it stay around and become a strong established ancient brand this time around
I used to cop bootleg Karl Kani sweaters from the Chinos on Canal st back when I was in high school 🤣
Going to the MAGIC show in the 90's and witnessing firsthand the growth of the urban clothing sector. Karl Kani was the 1st black owned brand with sizeable distribution I took notice of. Top five Brands to ride his coattails were FUBU, Enyce, Ecko, Sean John, and Phat Farm. Then there were hundreds of Brands influenced by those 5.
Bring back Phat Farm clothing line.
Enyce too
That was deep Mr. Kani. Respect.
They would be Spaulding without black athletes.
I actually do. Just not marketed Like Roca Wear or Fubu was. I miss Karl Kani. Does he have a new website?
Barry Taylor ... seriously ....😂
Good interview Vlad i like to meet Karl Kani one day i love fashion since i was young i was born 88 and grew up in era of fashion i have great designs just need that platform to show my talent and my insight very smart. Keep it going and God bless and one day the great lord will see my way through what i want to do in life and that's fashion💯❤💪💪
Can Vlad shut up and let the person he is interviewing talk!! His big mouth loves to over talk the interviewee!
I see everybody commenting on bs!! How many got that spiritual game together and ain't worried about what the next person wearing?
Investing in my own brand, only shit I wear Is the shit i been had, Guess (I get 50% off 🤣) & Yeezys If it’s a fire drop
Never worried bout what the next man wearing but my fabrics def gotta be on point 💯
Price isn't just about production costs. It's also about making people better about themselves for wearing your product. The higher their self-esteem jumps, the higher you can charge.
Karl Kani and Fubu was my shit growing up damn I used to be geared.
Loved Kanis suits. Nice pieces.
Us Polo Association is older than Ralph Lauren
Karl Kani killed this interview! Word! Good sh#t!
I love his business sense
I use to rock Karl kani back in the baggie jeans day, he use to make the best baseball design Jersey,
Polo Ralph Lauren dresses the US Olympic team. Consistently. I can't even remember what it was like before it's been that long. I don't wear it anymore but that is a huge statement. No one else can make that claim. Just like NBC has aired the Olympics since no one can even remember the last time one of the other networks aired it. Like FOX airs Nascar every year. None of these hip-hop "urban" clothing companies are anywhere close to this. And I tried a lot of these brands but between coming short on quality and the fact that they were undermarketed and out gunned it is easy to see. If you're into fashion and you don't want to deal with PRL/Blue Label anymore you have to go out of your way because every department store, every discount store, every internet site it is right there in your face. I was at Macy's the other day; I contemplated it, as usual, came this close, you know how it is. And if you want something different, like RRL, Black Label or Purple Label that stuff is never on sale. You're not paying to market the label anymore (like you do with Polo and Chaps) but you're paying extra not to. So it's the same situation.
I only buy high end brands on sale. I get to know employees at stores for sales coming up. Two Polo jumpsuits worth $250 for $40 from the Polo store. I stay fresh on the cheap side of the game.
Very insightful interview.
Jordan made Nike that's why the bought converse because Jordan preferred converse.
VLAD you post some dope stuff but you talk over people too much you gotta chill
I see your clothes here in Japan. congrats. Used to see fubu when i first moved here in 01, but not so much anymore.
Nike would would be Asics or Pro-Wing status without all those Superior Black Athletes.
Yo watch how u speak on Asics.. lol.
Vlad, refused to Answer Karl Kani question and reiterate his own statement. Karl Kani question was , if all the black Athletes don't work for Nike and wear Nike, what kind of Business would Nike be? They wouldn't be large companies without Michael Jordan and other black Athletes.
Great Interview!!!
Glad Kani is Keep it on Go , I rocked the Clothing very hard
My brand is quality but and its at a good price....the brand has been compared to a mixture of Ralph Lauren and Karl Kani and that's a major compliment to me.... Ive had so many people tell me my prices are to cheap cause the quality of my shirts are top notch.... Y'all keep your eyes and ears open for Ariviste clothing 🦅
Llfresh200@gmail.com send me something
More importantly, why is Nike discriminating against white athletes?
What do you mean?
Polo sponsor tennis golf this why they still relevant to this days Michael Jordan was the face of Nike even after retirement is the reason Nike is very popular
Interesting comment he made about as a kid seeing the rich guy driving a Mercedes wearing Polo. Mercedes...a car that's now made with more plastic than ever, and that's always depreciated with value like any other car...and Polo clothes, something that would never rise in value over time.
Mercedes-Benz was founded by germans. Polo founded by a white man sad blacks will never uplift and inspire other black owned businesses always european businesses.
The Goat from them Eastbay magazines✊
Come on back Karl....i remember buying Karl, sean john, fubu...i was a fubu Queen.😆
Polo had Tyson Beckford!!
Polo has Ralph Lauren, prolly their most prolific model of all.
At 3:47 - 4:00 Vlad thinks to himself "man... I've got to find this guy who stole his sales staff and interview him."
Freddy Cupples 😂😂😂😂😁
True...
😂 hahaha.. Vlad always thinking about the beef drama. ......I really think Sean Jean may be the culprit... lots of similarities and Puff got that shit off the ground and up in the air real quick.
Meaning i never seen Russel Simmons, and karl kani in my hood. But ive seen there clothing brand.
I beg to differ. You can have an every day low price strategy and still source quality and sustainable goods. Hell, H&M and Target have perfected this model. I feel you Karl Kani but you need to re-review retail economics and supply chain.
T.K Kirkland put Karl Kani on to the clothing game! #HeDidItFirst
S/o to everybody that keeps thinkin thats Marlon Wayans in the thumbnail
Vlad do your homework on U.S. Polo Association. They were around before Ralph Lauren. Polo is a jersey of polo players, not an invention of Ralph Lauren. So he actually copied them.
"Nike gave Lebron a billi not to runaway" - Yeezus
Great info💯
Informative. To say to least.
Got to give it up to carl he made a impact on urban hip hop culture from a far without being involved with the hip hop culture from a far.
Explain?
His on the money!, Big ups !
how can I get in touch with him I have an idea. that can put you back on top.
Take away all the fans who pay super high ticket prices to see black athletes play, where would they be without them???
Exactly its funny how the people who writes the athlete's checks are wealthy while the athlete is rich. Theres only a select few of black billionaires. Sad
What would vladtv be ?in that same context
