- “Fresh is something that always has to be new,” says Dapper Dan, “and always has to be potent.” He should know. The avatar of hip hop style got his start in Harlem of the 1970s designing custom “knock-ups” (as opposed to knock offs) for a who’s who of big ballers and shot callers, as well as a few rappers. From Eric B & Rakim to Kool G Rap to The Fat Boys-even Mike Tyson-Dapper Dan dressed them all. But then, during the early 1990s certain major fashion brands ran him out of business. “I had to go underground,” says Dan, who has since made a groundbreaking deal with the House of Gucci, opening boutiques in Harlem and more recently in SoHo. “I was built to start all over anyway,” says Dan. “I was NOT going to let this get away from me…. I said ‘They ain’t gonna leave me out of this.’”

In 1987-1988 , my crew - 8 young kids " 22 posse" from Mt Vernon ( we all were 12 & 13 yrs of age)... took the bus and train up to Harlem ( Dapper Dans ) to look at the photo book of his outfits at his store...its was an Amazing moment !
So glad that he is finally getting his props. I think it's Gucci that gave him a store in his old neighborhood, back in the day they shut him down and then years later stole his ideas and started making the same suits and jackets that he was making, years later they realize that they were wrong and gave him a store and now he has unlimited rights to do what he likes!

my name is Earl, I was one of the first worker's that worked for him when he first opened up, and years later he fired me because way back my oldest and only brother` hood named(Black mike) had robbed Danny at a gambling joint,back then the original workers was troy,ramell,big Boomer, liz, both of Dannys brothers(Ceazar whose son Darrell had gotten murdered,and Dannys brother that looked like him a little bit),Those was definitely the best days of HARLEM WORLD N.Y.C! !!

He answered the question in his new book, "Dapper Dan, Made in Harlem". He basically printed the logos on the fabric he purchased; he goes into great detail about it. The book was pretty good, I enjoyed it.
