I was a very young nipper in the early 60's living in Victoria Road but can remember trains going towards Newport into the Faielee tunnel.
At the age of eight In 1971 I was taken to Newport station by my old man to watch the last train laeve Newport!

Thank you for this trip down memory lane - quite literally as I spent my whole childhood from 1961 to 1979 living on Fairlee Road backing on to the old railway line. I can vaguely remember trains running behind our house but more importantly for all the children who lived nearby it was our playground - especially all the old waiting rooms and workers huts which are long gone.

    Hi people! 🖐
A couple of you have messaged about setting up a kickstarter to help us with future videos.
We are not going to set up a kickstarter as it specifies a set goal amount.
We have though set up a collection pot for those that would like to chuck us a couple of coppers for the time put in to the research, filming & editing of these videos.
Obviously this is completely up to you, it's just there if you're feeling generous.
    Here's the link.

All the very best and thank you!

Thanks to Owen for explaining link to Victoria!
When my kid was about 2 they walked into the show at Haven Street - stopped - pointed then went into a rant about the F**ing troll ...
I went red with embarrassment until I realised they were trying to say The Fat Controller!!
I pretended like I knew this.
Really enjoying your series and channel. Keep having fun on your explorations. Have you made any videos on best pint or takeaway - get some local sponsors!! The Birdham in Bembridge had some elevated food (the tables were a bit high)

At Wootton, the road between the original and current stations is still crossing the original bridge over the railway. It has been mostly infilled. However, there is still a void under the bridge. The void under the bridge is accessed by a series on manholes in the road so that the bridge can be periodically inspected.

Really that is fascinating! Will have to look into that & perhaps see if I can get hold of someone with permission to take a look. 🤔

The last train from Newport stopped at Whippingham with a notice of closure to be handed to the Queen (obviously she was long gone!) but I love the fact that they did that ❤️

Enjoing your videos so far, can't wait to see more. I've been following along with the video on google maps! Seems inexplicable to me that there is no line to newport now, it would certainly solve a few traffic issues I'm sure. However it has meant we got the fabulous steam railway I suppose.

Between the Islandline and steam railway platforms you can still see the foundations of the junction signal box at Smallbrook. At Wootton the bridge was buried under the road and still exists. It was buried when the road was widened. The station masters house still exists at Wootton. It was built above the station on top of the embankment.

I'm told there is a bit of the viaduct? down in the grass between the area where Halfords is and the road? I thinks it's by the traffic lights.

I think there is, but it is part of the bridge over Hunnyhill which carried the Freshwater branch, which is on the 'to do' list 🙂

If you stand by the dual carriageway flyover at the Medina, the brick pillars are set in the embankment. They can be seen from the car park side of the road. At low tide you can also just make out the base of the central brick pillar in the middle of the river (close to Quay Arts)

When a teen ager late 60s early 70s the railway line still went over the River Medina we use to walk over the arches up to Newport station and on to Cowes along the old line, and were I lived in Fairlee rd in early 2000s the houses were built over the old railway embankment up from the tunnel
