This is a gift. It mus have been a huge kick to play with Miles. Amazing work making music with another bass player. No stepping on each others' toes. Thanks for posting.
Miles and Marcus could have taken this format with this band and and played all night. Marcus was Miles’Gil and Wayne and Herbie at the end of his final destination.
Scrooged was worth it just for the vignette...Saw it for the first time this season,(Covid Christmas 2020), and about choked when Murray walked by. It felt like an inside joke!
Although in the movie Scrooged, it was just a short bit with Miles, Paul Schaffer, Larry Carlton, David Sanborn. Bill Murray's callous character walks past them and their tip jar on a street while they're busking and sneers "When did you learn that song, yesterday?"
Tremendous core with a musical intelligence rarely matched. Sanborn is a perfect addition to Miles’ groups for the color he adds to the group dynamics. Miles called him a “ true alto player” with a sound and approach which is quite different from Kenny’s approach; but quite similar in concept to Berg’s style. A sax historian provides Dave with a foundation that allows him to make significant contributions to Miles’ expanding musical vocabulary.
I remember this very well. I hit Record on the old VHS machine and watched it many times. Also, in those ancient days, I transferred onto a really killer cassette tape of swinging Christmas music.
Yep! That was AMAZING! You and Marcus sounded great! Thanks for sharing this Will! Happy New Year 2021! I hope we can meet in person one day! I was hoping to meet you after a taping of the show back in 2005-ish. As soon as the show was over, I watched as you put your bass in the stand and walked briskly out the back door!! LOL! I thought, "oh well, maybe another time". Be well and thank you for all the inspiration!
I have to say I think Marcus Miller was the stand-out here, followed closely by David Sanborn. Miles was there in all of his sparkling glory but didn't supply much ( I'm a Chet Baker fan). Also have to mention the "Three Kings" of the band, Sid, Will and Anton.
@@blablubs5596 You're most likely correct but I don't need the attitude, I want the artist (whomever) to put heart and feeling into a performance like Sanborn did here. I believe Miles could've killed the tune if he'd wanted to.

After seeing this, I played it for a year couldn’t get it out of my head
Absolute elite and classy performance. That sax was tearing it up.
Wow jazz on national television. Those were the days.
What a cool thing to see Miles (as always) with Marcus and Will Lee. I sure miss the music from those days.
Jazz elite, what a great Xmas gift..... W/a young David Sanborn & younger Marcus Miller..

Sanborn guested with Miles on stage at Montreux in 1986, in case you haven't seen that.

Very special, indeed. I recorded it on my VCR (VHS) the night it aired and played it back over and over for years. Thank you Mr. Lee.

How cool is this?! Man! Clips like that show just how flexible you guys were. Is Anton playing with brushes? Sounds like it, but I can't see it.

was there a chart that showed the tempo changes? Was there a rehearsal?
