Best value for me is Race for the Galaxy. So many hours in that box. For old games, Diplomacy, Dutch Blitz/Nertz, Rook (and all old card games), Nuclear War, 1829 (the first 18xx). King Oil, Mastermind, Cleudo, The Stockmarket Game Some of that may be nostalgia, but a lot still hold up today.
Of all the old games, mine has got to be Acquire. Simple, elegant, light in component variety, immersive. It gives the same feelings I get from just about every modern board game.
Yes, was waiting for you to say Acquire! Great game that I started playing in 1974. Still have my AH copy. I need to pull that out and give it another play!
I really liked the section on best-value games! I think games that I own that I would consider great value are Crew: Quest for Planet Nine, TRAILS, Love Letter, codenames, Wingspan, chess (classic abstract strategy), Terraforming Mars, and possibly games. These are all relatively affordable games that I’ve been able to play several times with a lot of different groups, and they’re games that I really love and find myself coming back to over and over again.
12:45 That's it! That's what that game was called! We spent nearly every day in June of 1976 playing it and I have not been able to recall what it was. Thanks.
Excellent stuff as always Mathew. Welcome to the Moon was a great pick, I've played through the campaign three times now and still discovered new things each time.
I think everyone should have a "Bad Board Game Night" like once a quarter or so (kinda like having a "Bad Movie Night") - where you all agree to play some of the "worse" board games you own. There can be some fun times in playing a game with the intent of people getting to say whatever they want about a board game without worry of offending someone else. It's like a 3 hour round of "your momma" jokes... except with board games. "Your board game is so fat,..." I don't know, maybe not. Just a suggestion. Perhaps a positive side of that is that could be that rules get better explained or you get those people that say, "I used to hate ____[insert board game, not a person's name]____, but now I can't get enough!"
My favourite old game is also Acquire. I started playing it in 1994 and still love it. My Schmidt Spiele Version from 1993 is also the nicest version I've seen so far. If I compare it to other games I played at that time like Titan or Merchant of Venus (which were designed in the 80s), Acquire has aged so much better. It fufills a lot of modern day boardgame standards. What a brilliant design.
Best bang for my buck was probably Coup. Bought it at $20, played it at least 500 times during college. I ended up giving the game away to my brother in college. Since then, I've found games I've enjoyed more, and Coup has become a bit boring for me, but I gotta say that's easily the best ratio I've owned.
I just got this and wanted to try playing this weekend, I tried watching a video and read the rules. seems confusing lol, do you have any tips? especially since I have to learn it and teach it this weekend lol
Feudal is awesome but….. Slightly broken. There is one mountain where if you place your castle correctly and put an archer on top, it can not be taken.
Fun, yes, always. Mille Bornes...my wife picked it up at a yard sale a long while back and I had forgot about it. I thought the name looked familiar and was like, hmm, I wonder if that was one of the games she got, looked up at my small box game self and there it was, right next to Phase 10. She had recently sorted through the "junk" games box and sat it there. Checking it out now. It was destiny...thanks WIP team!
I would say my favorite would be Connect Four. Yahtzee and perhaps Chess would make the list. Not a favorite games, but of the older games it would make the list.
I can’t say that they’re any games I hate! But there are some games I will never play again(diplomacy looking at you), with the experience was just so unpleasant even though they are actually good games I wouldn’t just wouldn’t play them
12:21 Pit! Look into it!

The great thing about a board game versus a video game is that if you and your five friends all want to play it, you only have to buy it once.
Unless you are playing on Zoom :).

I meant to say *possibly Cascadia.
Mille Bornes is one of my most played games of all time. I played this SO MUCH as a kid and then again on the computer as an adult.
Glue is ESSENTIAL for the Folded Space inserts! I learned that the hard way...

Great discussion! Great video!
Thanks Henri!
The oldest game that I love is Cribbage. My wife and I kind of bonded over it while we were dating.

Acquire and Mille Borne are my favorite older games
We still enjoy Scrabble & Yahtzee, as well as Mille Bornes! Great video, as always!🎉
I love Mille Bornes, merci! But I tried Acquire and I didn't like it much. Maybe I'll give it another go

Cribbage, Yahtzee and Crokinole are my favourite « old » games. I really enjoy your content 😁 keep up the great work!
Really love Marabunta and Trio!
Koi koi, Kalah, Backgammon and Crokinole are my most-played and most enjoyed old games.

Old favorite: crokinole
So right after watching this I went and bought Welcome to the Moon from my FLGS. Hopefully we enjoy it. lol.
Love your content!
Feudal, Acquire, Rack-O,
Feudal is awesome but…..
Slightly broken.

Bang for your buck gotta be cosmic run and pandemic atleast for me. Fav old games: crokinole and rack-o

Gamewright games seem to all be surprisingly good value for comparatively little money
Of the old 3M bookshelf games, I enjoy Twixt.
The weird one for me is people who immediately discount games like Crokinole without trying them, when they're so much damn fun.
I can’t say that they’re any games I hate! But there are some games I will never play again(diplomacy looking at you), with the experience was just so unpleasant even though they are actually good games I wouldn’t just wouldn’t play them
Risk …
but if people are wrong, I HAVE TO CORRECT THEM.
