Before my final thoughts in the form of a full review arrives, I wanted to take the all-new 2021 Ford Kuga ST-Line X Edition PHEV (yes, the longest name for a car known to all of mankind) to test out its EV capabilities where Ford claim the Kuga on 'electric juice only' can achieve up to 35 miles of range
Being curious, I wanted to put it to the test in the most scientific yet most unrealistic way (charging) possible to see how far I could actually go?
Can I reach 35 miles or will the old petrol relic intervene and save the day beforehand? Watch to find out!

Happy to accept constructive feedback in a polite manner, if you wish be rude on the other hand you'll get the same fair treatment back (whether you like or not, think taste of your own medicine is the word)

Great video👍 missed a few bits that I think were worth considering though.
The four modes (EV Auto - EV Now - EV Later - Petrol Only/Charge Batteries)
Consideration of these modes and how, and why you would use them (which includes the essence of why a hybrid is practical vs a full EV)
Then there’s the Five drive modes (Normal - ECO - Sport - Slippery - Deep Snow and Sand) again personal driving choice dependant on the individual driver and the circumstances/requirements.
Then there’s the quoted 200+ mpg?
A good friend is currently getting between 168-178mpg on real life driving conditions without going for full eco driving.
His analysis of cost so far is approximately 4p per mile using EV Auto as opposed to 14p per mile from his previous diesel Kuga.
There’s the option to maximise your mpg over longer distances as well as reduce your carbon emissions either on the whole or by driving in EV Only whilst around town, or for shorter journey usage. So to be fair, I think there are many other considerations to take into account before final judgement is made.
And there’s no way I’d have sat at that EV charge station for over three hours; what an absolute trooper!👏👏👏🤣😂🤣
Great video, acceptable 32 mile range considering; but much, much more to consider???🤔🤔🤔
    Keep posting you videos👍

David, thanks for stopping by and of course commenting too; appreciate the constructive and polite approach 🙏🏼
I didn't mention the driving modes too much/or at all as this video I just wanted to focus on the EV range only, I've left the more detailed items for the full review (currently in the editing suite) ... O.G subscribers know I'm terrible at being consistent with content LOL
After attempting Lands End to John O'Groats in a full EV a week after filming this (video live if you fancy some laughs), I can get on board a little more with Hybrids as you get the backup of electricity alongside a I.C.E powertrain
I still have nightmares about charging it, even more so with the Mach-E 🤣
I will however stick by my point of the confusion of adding more weight to an already heavy platform where you only get a small range from, not to mention the battery longevity and cost to replace
Car ownership tends to be 2-3 years max, so I'd argue although the cost per mile is cheaper, are you actually breaking even towards the end of ownership?
Don't forget the cost of electric alongside fuel is increasing and to maximise cost savings you'll need a wall charger and easy access to have one in the first place otherwise you're getting cained at service stations
Thanks again for tuning in! All the best 👍🏼

The breaks are great. You just have to get used to how hybrids stop. They first use the generator as it tries to recuperate as much energy as possible. However, if you need a quick full stop, the actual breaks start to act. So, it's a matter of getting used

I'd still take a Petrol version, PHEV in any car makes no sense to me as you carry extra weight (more so as it is), range isn't great unless you drive around in town (still makes no sense in a big SUV) and to charge it takes far too long meaning you'll only ever use it once a day if you reach its maximum range and then have to recharge in the evening/when sleeping

Just out of interest why didn’t the other chargers work? Also, could anyone tell me what happens to the engine when you go from battery to say motorway speeds, does the battery warm up the engine to minimise damage?

    • @PocketRockets
      @PocketRockets  2 года назад

Certain EV/PHEV use specific charging ports depending on their battery capacity
At the time of filming, I thought all newer cars whether EV or PHEV would work on rapid chargers (learnt that lesson quickly haha!), so where I filmed originally, those are for pure EV's that have rapid charging facility built into the car
The one I ended up using is for smaller EVs (both new/older first gen cars and of course PHEV's), hardcore EV owners will probably correct me saying some of the newer EV's do accept rapid charging but I personally don't know of any!
Battery doesn't warm the engine up at all, not sure what you mean by that; the battery is a separate entity to the engine; the car defaults to the battery and will only run on the engine if you ask it by using the EV select button, using kick down on the throttle or when the battery runs out
Check out my full review on this very car for more info 👍🏼

@@PocketRockets many thanks for the reply that’s useful to know. With regards to the battery heating up the engine, I just wondered if there was a method to slightly warm the engine before going at motorway speeds. The idea of going from on the motorway in EV mode and then flicking over to the engine straight away makes me concerned about damage. Maybe modern engines don’t need to be warmed up first before driving at 70!

You probably lost a bit of range at the start because you were heating the car etc....Kuga has a feature (like most EVs) to preheat (or cool) the car interior and put the heated seat and wheel on for a set departure time while its still plugged in, so not to use any range. Also it pre heats the battery a bit to again help range. Can be set in car, or using the app on your phone
We've got a PHEV coming saturday as we like our current MHEV Kuga so much...its perfect for us as we mostly do little journeys during the week so would only use electric, charging the car overnight, but we often also travel long distance a couple times a month where an full EV would be abit twitchy on range. Plus, full EVs are still so expensive!
I'm not really bothered about the economy, i just like the cruising about in silence an EV gives.
I still have my dinasour cars to keep the petrolhead side of me happy though :)

    • @PocketRockets
      @PocketRockets  2 года назад +1

I did hear about the pre-heat facility but I couldn't access it via FordPass as you have to wait to activate it and due to it being a Ford UK press car I didn't bother in the end (tried it with the Mach-e this week just gone but no luck)
I had heating seats and climate on to simulate real life driving conditions no point doing a journey freezing my private parts to get a few extra miles 🙈🤣
As demonstrated it done well on the range test but you still need to either charge at home (ideally a wall charger or at work) to maximise the PHEV element
If you've subscribed, you'll see me with a Full EV doing an ambitious challenge and I agree a hybrid makes more sense for spontaneous trips that are long distance for example
Thanks for watching and commenting, enjoy your new Kuga! 😊

What did you think of the Mache E? That is what we want ultimately after test driving one a few weeks ago...I think once they are easier to get hold of we will go for one...a GT preferably :D only thing I didnt like is its quite noisy after getting out the double glazed Kuga....But I suppose Ford had to save money somewhere to make the Mach E a bit more affordable.
      Take care!

Ride isn't great, busy all the time even on a nice new road surface
The car I tested was missing 130 miles in range and was taking over 1 hour longer to rapid charge to 80% (on 120Kw chargers)
It's priced competitively to it's rivals like the ID4, EV6 GT and Model Y but it does fall back on elements like boot space
I'd say the Kuga is all round a better platform more boot space, more comfort and still cheaper to buy
A fairly first crack at a Full EV by Ford but there's a lot of work to do ...

Thinking you've raised some valid points on the carbon emissions used to build the Kuga . I've no idea what the offset is when driving the Kuga , and reducing the carbon and emissions, but when driving locally around and between towns , ( which are typically shorter distances) I feel the upside is less pollution, both noise and tail pipe emissions which hopefully benefits pedestrians and the local environment. As you pointed out the government promoted Diesel over 10 years ago as the best thing, and moderate BIK tax and now as an essential company car driver, I am now being penalised heavily tax wise for having a modern Diesel , and so ultimately, PHEV is the only way to go to reduce this effective loss in take home pay. Although the PHEV might strike the best balance for now, with total Kuga range using ICE and battery around 500+ miles , as you say, probably full electric is ultimately the way to go , for range and charge time, but bearing in mind a change of travel time would be needed, adding more time to journey plans, to recharge on long distances, to remove that range anxiety when driving around 350 miles or more, particularly in cold weather, which could be an unknown in battery range . .. and possibly being stranded with no charge facilities .. 🤔

Your chat here is based on opinions and not facts. Some of what you say with authority is BS. For instance mining Lithium happens once, that can be reused forever! You're charging the battery with mostly regen not with "a petrol generator" ....
Basically if you do a lot of trips around the 40mile mark (a commute) but with a few longer journeys PHEVs are for you. else lookk at full EV or economic combustion engiens.

    • @PocketRockets
      @PocketRockets  2 года назад

Battery can't be recycled, certainly not used forever, it's not a renewable/economic way to make cars pollute less; look into the damage and how lithium is mined/procured
Regen hardly charges the battery compared to using the engine, so you're wrong
So you're saying its acceptable to drive around in a 2.3t SUV to do small commutes?
My chat is using common sense and realising a car is meant to be convenience not a faff

  • @davidlogan1911

It’s is a definitely an good way going forward but even with the full EV taking 30 minutes to charge, todays society doesn’t really have the patience to wait. And can you imagine the queue waiting to get on chargers like it is today getting on to Petrol and diesel pumps where on average you’re waiting 5 to 10mins.
I do embrace the technology and the move over to something greener but with over 30 million vehicles on our roads the charging process has got to be as quick as filling up with petrol/diesel.
Interesting point made about the batteries at the end of their life. How long do they last and how much to replace one? Is the vehicle a write off when the battery has reached the end of its life or is it affordable to replace, and can the old battery be recycled?

    • @PocketRockets
      @PocketRockets  2 года назад +1

I tested a Mustang Mach-E, a week after this Kuga video and I will say after the Mach-E, a PHEV is a better solution over a current full EV (yet I still don't see it being the future); check out the Mach-E video if you have some time to see why ...
I do have a full review of the Kuga in the works, I explain in a little more detail that it's not really that green; the car itself is heavier, more intensive to build and the battery in this case is small so only catered to smaller journeys which is ludicrous in a big SUV
Battery will last from research up to 8-10 years depending on the amount of charging, how you do and the amount of rapid one's you use
For example, a friend of mine works in a car garage that happened to replace a battery in a 2012 Nissan Leaf, done 70k miles and the battery cost was shy of £8-9k including labour to get a range of 179 miles give or take! Look up used prices of Nissan Leafs at that age and mileage and you'll be gobsmacked
Most of the battery is non recyclable, so look out in the next 10 years for the next crisis 'We are running out of space to dispose of batteries' 🤣 #BatteryGate
Like anything past/present and certainly future, the government and the rest of the world's leaders just force something new for a quick buck and worry about the consequences when it's already too late
Ask yourself why Hydrogen hasn't been pushed like EVs, the concept is similar to petrol/diesel vehicles and you can condense the design so we can get smaller cars instead of tanks everywhere
Hope that answers some questions for you David, thanks for watching and commenting

I have one of these cars and I don’t think this is a misleading video. I personally feel PHEV cars (most of them anyway) are a pretty good way to go for now but it’s definitely just a stop gap before better EV and UK infrastructure to handle electric. PHEV cars are not for everyone and sometimes the extra cost really should make you stop and think. For me, it was worth it but I understand the concerns and criticism’s.

This is PHEV!! It's not an EV. This guy really should not be posting stuff he clearly doesn't understand.

I've already made it clear that you wouldn't charge a PHEV how I did but I did for good reason to showcase the technology, its flaws and the prove its charged from 0% to 100% to show the range claimed which it did pretty well!
It is still not acceptable for a battery that gets 35 miles of range to take 3 and half hours
You clearly doesn't have a clue what you're going on about and on your electric high horse!
Your lack of constructive feedback and behaviour is disgusting
