I am quite sad as Ultraman you didn't mention that the silhouette visual references classic Ultraman opening visual. But hey, this video just talks about what are on the screen rather than what's in the background like they lyrics and references. So yeah.
the colors and animation in that scene are also reminiscent of the Ping Pong The Animation OP, which was directed by Science Saru co-founder Masaaki Yuasa
The opening teases a lot but doesn't outright spoil like other openings from the last couple of years, and the visuals and actual music is phenomenal lmao creepy nuts crushed it again plus my favourite gilf looked like she was a character in Prison School 😅
The saturated colors and silhouette section of the OP is direct homage to the original Ultraman opening credits. Momo's kick has her earrings looking like Ultra's eyes for a second. Dandadan in general takes a lot of inspiration from Ultraman monsters for its aliens. Another easy easter egg is Serpo's pose is the same used for Ultraman's signature attack.
Another fun note is the song it self, they make a lot of Japanese occult culture references like the bar "kuwabara, kuwabara, kuwabara" is spoken to ward of missfortune kind of like "knock on wood" or "touch wood" gesture. They also mention Sadako and Kayako which is ghosts from Japanese horror movies. If you guys want too see more i recommend looking at Creepy nuts english translation of Otonoke here on yt.
I just love the art style of those print-like images, the ones that look like they were pressed onto a sheet of paper. That mix of slower shots with little movement in contrast with the otherwise frenetic pace sets it apart. Also, this is some of the best color work I've seen since Kyousougiga.
I LITERALLY just finished the manga to the current chapters yesterday. So I've been seeing this opening in a new light. It's SO good, lol Also I sort of noticed that it seems like the MCs are done as normal, most of the occult monsters are done in that sort of sketchy painty style, while the aliens are almost all sort of flat and minimalistic. Even Okarun when he transforms dons the rough painted style over his normal style. It's very nice, tying to occult being very primal while aliens are very scifi.
9:44 This isn't just the moon and skeletons. These are the two direct forces, Yo-Kais and Aliens. In Ep.1 of the show, the UFO was in place of the moon when Momo and Ken destroyed the alien attempting to "reproduce". On the other hand, these are some of the most popular Yo-Kai in Japanese myth. Kasa-oboke and Gashadokuro are the two primary spirits shown. Yo-Kai are somewhat (basically) ghosts, who have specific powers and abilities. These are the two primary powers at play in the series.
Agreed. So far with a quick search I'm quite sure the shown yokai/evil spirits are from left to right: -Gashadokuro (holding another spirit I can't seem to figure out I think????) -Kasa-obake -Komainu -Tābo Babā / ターボババア -Acrobatic Silky / アクさら / アクロバティックさらさら (The hair is visible just right below Turbo granny) -Onbusuman / オンブスマン / Obariyon or Konaki-jiji -Evil Eye / 邪視 It was actually pretty fun reading about the urban legend of Turbo granny. I recommend reading about her on the en Namu wiki with apparently a movie based of of the legend called "The Crone" / "Kosoku Baba" by Eisuke Naito.
Its showing essentially the different sources of powers for the crew: Turbo Granny, Acrobatic Silky, Onbusman and the Evil Eye below on the "earth side" and then the planet or moon covered in sigils representing the Kur or just aliens in general
Also, in Japanese golden balls are usually referring to the literal sack, which fits well in this short scene of Okarun making this transformation stance 3:51. They usually refer to them as golden balls or family jewels.
I love the opening because when i read the manga i just go like WAIT THIS IS THE THING FROM THE OPENING!! and i keep rewatching the opening every few chapters and keep appreciating it more
This breakdown of the *Dandadan* opening is fascinating. The way Science Saru manages to blend character-driven storytelling with visual cues in just a minute speaks volumes about their attention to detail. I love how you pointed out the use of color, especially the deliberate choice of red, yellow, and blue to highlight character contrasts and connections-it feels like every frame is packed with meaning. The balance of hip-hop vibes with horror elements, not to mention the nod to reaction faces, makes the opening feel uniquely dynamic. It’s so much more than just an "opener," it’s a mini story in itself!
Either that, or it's contrasting with the next shot. The trees have eyes likely referencing paranormal spirits, while the next shot shows a distant planet likely related to aliens.
WRONG on the colour scheme. Momo has always been a blue-ish green in the opening, like when she uses her whole power in the anime itself and like her earrings when she's coloured blue in the initial part of the opening, her being coloured blue, I think, is a nod to her being influenced by Okarun. The actual colour schemes are: Okarun is royal blue and a bit of yellow, Momo is seafoam green and a bit of pink (like spirit energy), and Turbo Baba is crimson.
Idk if someone mentioned this but in the place mono and okarun are in, the drawings on the wall is referencing both the real Japanese foke lore yokai but also the ghosts in the series like turbo granny, the Konaki-jiji, the umbrella ghost(if u know u know, and etc. just wanna point that out
9:49 its alien spaceships combined with yokei(those Japanese ghost/spirits) combining okarun and momos interests together. The spaceship looks like the one from star wars
What's even crazier about this song around the 1:54-56 mark the music briefly stops and you can hear them mention "the Bohemian Grove" in a distorted voice. I had to listen to the instrumental to catch it but it clearly says it. I wonder if Yukinobu Status was researching this as well for bizarre occult stories or if it could somehow make it into the Dandadan story.
fun fact: the banana alien pose is a reference to an iconic japanese superhero: ultraman and his spacium ray attack, the alien design itself also is an homage to many ultraman aliens
Also about Okarun's yokai form, some people have pointed out (specifically Ive seen it on reddit) that the less human Okarun looks (teeth-mask-muzzle-thing covering his mouth, being drawn in that looser scribbly form/not in full detail, etc) the less connected to his own humanity is or the more Turbo Granny has control of him. Felt like it was relevant
I think the yellow color of the character represents his old self (before the events of the anime) and him drawn in blue shows his current state (along with the female character) that's why the balls are painted yellow since only the character from the past has them lol and also in the anime it shows the female character trying to control her powers and seeing Grandma Turbo's spirit as a flame, that's why the main character when transformed takes on this kind of fluid form, which is very similar to the visualization of the female character
5:08 you missed something here. The giant orb in the sky is the same thing as what okarun punches through and what’s at the final bit with momo and him sitting somewhere
I agree and disagree with you, some have an amazing plot but with good characters. although it’s still not character driven. dandadan has a very messy sequel plot to help with its silliness, the characters are basically in itself the main plot while the “kinda plot” is wacky, just like dandadan
The colors are actually not random! They used color theory so perfectly. Using compatible colors on the color wheel to make everything pop so nicely! It looks so good, they did a great job

Chinju no Mori or “sacred forest” often house the village Jinja shrine important to communal life and represents the Japanese sentiments towards nature and the divine as well as its relationships to humanity and the need for coexistence.
You didn't mention all the Ultraman references. Like the Momo doing that flying kick and how her earing becomes the Ultraman eye. And all the energy beam weapons that are fired from hands by the aliens like Ultraman.
Great video. Color-wise, I think both Okarun and Momo are a mix of red and blue. Okarun is naturally blue, but his powers are red, while Momo is naturally red and her powers are blue. So, Turbo Granny is all red, while Seiko is all blue. Just my two cents, could be wrong.
as for 8:00 i think the fact that aira is on yellow which is the main color for okarun in opening and jiji on blue which is momo main color it shows connection of them to both main characters
When okarun looks up at the sky right before sing momo's spirit hands, he has the same haircut he does after beating turbo granny, it shows that the characters are pogression in the opening as it progresses. You can even look at the op as a story telling the progeession of momo, oakrun as the fight monsters and later ecnounter geji and others
No hate, but theres a rlly cool reference u missed. When the song says haireta, which means im inside, its a reference to an urban legend, where a girl and his dad go hiking. They decide to stay in a spot for the night. In the middle of the night, the dad wakes up to his possesed daughter saying im inside, like the song.
The opening animation is a homage to the opening film of Ultraman Seven. Other aliens that appear in the animation are thought to be "Dada" and "Alien Baltan" from Ultraman Seven.
I noticed that the aline and spirit apperances in the opening is in the exact same order that the fight the mc in the manga, Serpe, flat woods, Earth bound, Silky, Dober demen, and nessy
I literally read the manga of Dandadan not even THINKING “they it’d be cool if it got an anime” but IT ACTUALLY IS, I’m so excited to see the rest, such a great anime ❤
I'd argue that its general Yokai under the eyeball moon at the end of the intro, rather than just skeletons, hinting at the overall spirits vs aliens vibe the story falls into later on.
Spoilers for the manga. Why do I also feel like the electricity might be a defense to when Okarun has to get back with the group by traveling through electrical lines.

One maybe coincidental thing i noticed was when okkarun is running in turbo granny form its animated VERY similarly to how Akira runs in Devilman Crybaby another science saru anime. I bring it up because these two characters too me have similar demenours and personalities (especially before Akira gets his powers) is it probably just same animation staff working on it? Yeah
@@ShonenOuji yeah like I said likely subconscious or highly accidentally. I love science saru a bunch probably my favorite studio currently making stuff rn
What do you like about the Dandadan OP? How do you like the anime so far?

Momo's dance
Awesome stuff man! Got yourself a new sub! God bless ya and Jesus loves ya!
That songs slaps on so many different levels
I am quite sad as Ultraman you didn't mention that the silhouette visual references classic Ultraman opening visual. But hey, this video just talks about what are on the screen rather than what's in the background like they lyrics and references. So yeah.
I also noticced that when Okarun started to run and transform, the transformed formed runs like Akira did in DevilMan Crybaby
I noticed that too! Science Saru was the team who worked on Devilman Crybaby, so I think that was probably a call back to that show.
the colors and animation in that scene are also reminiscent of the Ping Pong The Animation OP, which was directed by Science Saru co-founder Masaaki Yuasa
I was thinking the same thing!
DevilMan CryBaby was a crazy anime bro... It's very sad too.
The opening teases a lot but doesn't outright spoil like other openings from the last couple of years, and the visuals and actual music is phenomenal lmao creepy nuts crushed it again plus my favourite gilf looked like she was a character in Prison School 😅
Gotta love Seiko haha
Love Creepy Nuts, when they make an intro you know its gonna be good.
Love how it reminds me of Mob Psycho openings. Spoils everything without spoiling anything.
Honestly i dont like so much DanDaDan, but i Admit that the art style , plot and the opening are good @@ShonenOuji

I think the pose you mean is the Ultraseven beam pose
BTW I think the woods are the woods where the family renting jiji his house hide In a shot in the manga
Ahhhh. You know, that would make perfect sense. Thank you!
Another fun note is the song it self, they make a lot of Japanese occult culture references like the bar "kuwabara, kuwabara, kuwabara" is spoken to ward of missfortune kind of like "knock on wood" or "touch wood" gesture. Peak just dropped
No one ever points out that Okarun and Jiji are doing the Carlton.
Because it's not unusual to be loved by anyone
or that the momo shimmy is based on rihanna
I can’t be the only one that noticed our turbo granny runs like a devil in the devilman anime this studio also made
It's a 1:1 recreation of the Devilman: Crybaby run for sure.
I will have to get used to the animation because the manga style is phenomenal.
Luckily Science Saru kills it with animation. The manga art is a different beast.
I really see that the character designer from Ergo Proxy worked on this. It's so evident.
I just love the art style of those print-like images, the ones that look like they were pressed onto a sheet of paper. That mix of slower shots with little movement in contrast with the otherwise frenetic pace sets it apart. Also, this is some of the best color work I've seen since Kyousougiga.
3:30 cool detail but the background is the golden disk that we sent to space to communicate with aliens
3:17 Theremin. That instrument is called a theremin. What’s cool is it was actually invented around the same time that the Great Gatsby came out.
It's one of the first electronic musical instruments, and it's played with your hands. It's kind of like using a kinect to play music.
Its actually a sped up version of a song
I LITERALLY just finished the manga to the current chapters yesterday. So I've been seeing this opening in a new light. It's SO good, lol

as for 8:00 i think the fact that aira is on yellow which is the main color for okarun in opening and jiji on blue which is momo main color it shows connection of them to both main characters
