  • Hogan’s Heroes was an ensemble cast sitcom that took place in a German POW camp during World War II. The show first aired on September 17th, 1965, and ran for six seasons until its eventual end on April 4th, 1971. A total of 168 episodes aired altogether on CBS, and today is considered to be the longest running American television show ever based on World War II.

The show takes place in a fictional POW camp called Luft Stalag 13, located in Nazi Germany. Under the inept Colonel Wilhelm Klink, Colonel Robert E. Hogan and his band of American prisoners of war run a covert operation, where they help to sabotage German forces, as well as smuggle out other prisoners of war. Americans were immediately captivated by the hilarious and creative premise.
Of course, the real life events of World War II were grim and horrifying, and left millions of Jewish people murdered or traumatized. In order to ensure that such a sensitive topic was breached respectfully, all of the German soldiers were actually played by Jewish people. In fact, actor Robert Clary, who played Corporal Louis LeBeau, spent three years in a German concentration camp during World War II, and even lost his parents as well as other family members during the horrifying experience. The creators of the show knew that, while they wanted to make a comedic show surrounding the events of World War II, they would have to do their research to create a show that was still respectful and tasteful.
Before long, Hogan’s Heroes was a staple television show across the country as people tuned in to watch characters like Colonel Robert E. Hogan and Colonel Wilhelm Klink. Not only was the show popular among general audience members, but it also won critical acclaim. Throughout its run, Hogan’s Heroes was nominated for a total of 12 Emmy Awards, of which it won two.
Naturally, the show wouldn’t have been nearly as successful without its amazing cast members. Of course, because the show aired so long ago, many of the cast members have sadly lost their lives in the following years. In today’s video, we’re going to take a look at the amazing work of each cast member of Hogan’s Heroes, as well as the cause of their deaths. Make sure you stick around, because we’re also going to reveal which cast member was horribly killed, and his murderer was never found! We hope you like this video, and don’t forget to subscribe to Facts Verse for more!

I loved Nita Talbot as the Russian agent "Marya"... She was a character my father always looked forward to seeing in the show. I loved her accent she created for the character and her love of "my little one, LeBeau". There were many great guest stars in the show over the years, and they reused many actors in multiple roles. At the beginning in the pilot film Larry Hovis snuck into the camp as a lieutenant, and left in the dog truck when the other fellow, Olsen, returned. Then later he came back as Sergeant Carter. Howard Caine played another character before he came back as Major Hochstetter (minus moustache). Howard Caine was an awesome bluegrass musician and banjo player. I was around 6 years old when my Dad sat with me and we watched Hogan's Heroes together. My mother was French and lived in Paris during the war and her family hid Jewish people in their attic till the end of the war. She had troubles watching the show due to her memories, but thanks to Robert Clary she got on with the show over time. My Father survived the Japanese theatre of the war as he was Filipino and he lost his entire city to the Japanese invaders. Hogan's Heroes made him open up to me about what he survived and Mom shared her stories too. For that, I'm forever grateful to the show. Anyone also a Baby Boomer with links to family memories thanks to Hogan's Heroes? ❤️

I find it interesting that you see several actors cross over between MASH, Gomer Pyle USMC, The Andy Griffith Show, and even Green Acres (Otis Campbell). Also the assistant Director for the early Andy Griffith Show, Bruce Bilson directed several Hogan’s Heroes episodes, as well as Gene Reynolds who directed both several Hogans Heroes and MASH episodes. The Desliu lot was shared by The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle USMC, and Hogans Heroes, all in Culver City, so that probably explains a lot of double use by the actors. I believe The Malibu Canyon State Park where the “Fox Ranch” and outdoor scenes for MASH were shot was near Culver City CA also, so probably convenient for both directors and on screen talent to work all of those shows. This was a good summary however there was an error that must be pointed out. The narrator said that Robert Clary was liberated from a concentration camp on August 11, 1945. The war ended in Europe on May 8, 1945. I looked this up, he was liberated from Buchenwald concentration camp on April 11, 1945, approximately 4 weeks before the war was ended. Two other items should be mentioned. Werner Klemperer was an accomplished classical musician as was his father who was an orchestra conductor. Klink playing the violin off key was part of the comedy shtick that made Hogans Heroes so successful, given the fact that Werner Klemperer was an accomplished classical musician. Also Hogans Heroes running from 1965 to 1971 was one of the first integrated TV series in which an African American actor played a prominent role alongside white actors and actresses. Ivan Dixon played Sergeant Kinchloe until the last season when Kenneth Washington played the part.

Yes, I noticed that, in his bio-: he did small roles, early in his career. He was Poitier's stunt double, too, I think.
Most of Ivan's "creativity" (after Hogan's Heroes) was as director: sitting in "the director's chair", in a number of noteworthy productions.
I often wondered why he moved to North Carolina after selling the radio station he owned, in Hawaii: seeing how his birthplace was NYC (Harlem).
But, he did go to a school in N. Carolina, those many years ago.

Tough to add to the so many great comments below. Great show conceptually, writing and acting. Born in 62 and remember it being a must-watch for my dad and consequently us. Watch re-runs daily for laughs. This world needs more light-heartedness. One thing I didn't see mentioned but I always get a kick out of, is when Schultz and Klink would refer to LeBeau as a/the/that "cockroach". Now that's just funny.
Agree with other comments that Burkhalter and Hochstetter should have been covered. Perhaps Helga and Heidi as well. And sadly as we all likely know now in Jan 2023 that Robert Clary passed in Nov 2022. Reunited no doubt with his tragically-lost family.
RIP to all. Thank you for sharing your talents that continue to bring great laughter 50+ years later.

The story was that the friend was an awkward goof who had no social life on his own. Since Bob was a die hard partier and ladies man, hanging out with Bob gave the guy a party life and Bob would always hook him up with girls. When Bob cut him off and told him to go away the guy flipped out and killed him. Well, that's what I read in the paper when they charged him.

CBS was called the "Tiffany" network and deservedly so. They were on top during the golden era of television. Their writers (and others) were the best in the business at the time. Then all of sudden, leadership changed directions and brought about the cancelations of many highly-rated series in 1971 including Hogan's Heroes.
During that era, they continued with a practice first made famous by I Love Lucy introducing celebrity actors from other CBS shows to make cameos in episodes. The Mayberry Village drunk "Otis" from The Andy Griffith Show played the role of a German Munitions factory owner in Hogan. Of course, the younger ladies who appeared were buxom beauties.
That's just the way it was. Hogan's Heroes was a television work of art for its time though it did take a few liberties too many. Sadly, it would be politically incorrect today.
