    Love that Pale Shades of Grey cover. Any Nuggets is great, as far as I'm concerned.

      All three of those "ballads and dirges" comps are fantastic. Really obscure stuff that I would never have heard otherwise. I forgot to mention in the video that the KOL album almost replaced Liam Gallagher/John Squire as album of the year (so far.) But then I listened to the LG/JS record again. Thanks for commenting Kris!

    Love The Black Keys ! I still like the fact of you moving to Nor Cal was also to be close to the home of... The Dead ! LoL !!! All of those killer shows in the early to late 80's with Brent ! I finally used your 100 records Ive listened to for my last video. Cheers from Nevada. JT

      I'm a pretty big Black Keys fan too. Really enjoying this one. You know, I never saw Brent play. He died in July 1990 and my first show was October 1990. So I saw Vinny and Bruce. Thanks for commenting Jt!

      Vince was terrific. Sometimes I wish he would have played more strait piano, or B3 like Brent, but he was the strongest and best overall singer in the band ! No offense to the stylings of Uncle Jerry and Bobby. I missed your contest, but still had it in mind to do 100 most listened to..

      @@jtsrecordroom3963 Yep I think you were traveling in Asia during the contest. Thanks for jumping in and for the shout-out. I'm with you on Vinnie - it seems like he got stuck playing some kind of keyboard that just didn't have the big sound of the B3. And of course Bruce was playing piano for probably the first 5 or 6 shows that I saw. Hey! I just now posted another single for my Jukebox playlist. It's one I know you will like - Tighter, Tighter by Alive and Kicking. There's nothing I like more than a great pop song.

    Hi Randy. That Black Keys album looks great. I've always liked their stuff and have a few of their albums as well. Great bunch of psych albums too. Those Ballads and Dirges albums are similar to rare blues comps: a collectors compiles hard to find tracks from his own collection. Very cool. Have a good one. Thanks.

    • @RandallWeaver

      hey BluesGuy - I was thinking about you last night. Yesterday I received Temple of Blues, the new Cactus album. It's a two-record set with a lot of guest stars joining the original guitarist and drummer for Cactus. I listened last night and I would call it classic blues rock. I think you can pretty easily sample it online - give it a shot when you have a chance. You are right about the Ballads and Dirges comp - some rare songs on there I would never have heard if not for the record. Thanks for commenting!

    The only Black Keys album that I own is the RSD release from 2011. It plays backwards. You cue it up from the inner matrix and it plays to the cueing edge of the record. Kind of a cool novelty release. Ant Trip Ceremony from the cool looking Pale Shades Of Grey comp was assistant produced by David Crosby in and around 1967/68. Some great bands on that comp. Excellent pickups again Randy. I have always thought to myself when watching your updates that you really put a lot of thought into each of your new buys. Am I close?~

      @RandallWeaver  4 месяца назад +1

      Do I put a lot of thought into each record I buy? Well, I don't know about a lot....lol.....but I usually consider each record pretty carefully and the main thing I try to figure out is "Will I still want to listen to this record a year from now?" Interesting stuff about David Crosby and Ant Trip Ceremony. This Ballads and Dirges comps are great but I don't think I can actually name a single band. I just listen - the songs flow together really well. Thanks for commenting Rob!

    • @RandallWeaver
      @RandallWeaver  4 месяца назад

      I've liked every Black Keys record I've heard; maybe I'm not demanding enough, as it seems a couple commenters here have not been impressed with their last couple efforts. A good thing about this modern world we live in is that you can stream everything before buying. But it's not the same as listening with the album jacket in your hand. I think another potential problem with streaming is that some of my favorite records didn't appeal to me on first listen, but since I'd paid for the record, I listened again. With streaming, it's too easy to just move on. But I'm sure everyone approaches listening in their own way. Thanks for commenting Jack!

      I knew somebody had shown the Nuggets box, but I watch so many videos....lol I was thinking it was Jamie who had shown it, since he shows lots of box sets. He probably showed it too. My first copy of Nuggets Volume 1 was one that I got in about 1979 or 1980 - I had a cassette tape of it. It may still be around somewhere. I hope things are going well Steve - don't work too hard. Hi Randy, great pick ups. Black Keys are definitely a band I need to add to my collection. For some reason Kings of Leon are not appealing to me so far, perhaps I will revisit them. Various - Nuggets (Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968) added to my want list. Great video as always.

      I think the singer for Kings Of Leon has a very distinctive voice and singing style, so if you don't like his voice it's hard to like the band. They're probably one of my top favorite 3 or 4 21st century bands....Strokes would be another....Dr. Dog....a few others...That Nuggets comp is fantastic for sure. Can't go wrong with that one. Thanks for commenting Shawn!

    I have that first Nuggets comp. I forget where I found it, but always thought it was pretty interesting. The others you showed from the set looked pretty good too. A pretty cool time capsule from back in the day. The other night I saw The Seeds documentary. It's short at only 30 minutes, but they packed a bunch of history into it. They were featured on that first Nugget's comp. You can find it if you search Yesterday's Papers, which was the poster that put it up. I think the title of the doc was called Satisfy You: The Seeds. It made me want to look for more Seeds lps or CDs.

    I’m familiar with Black Keys and Kings Of Leon but haven’t really dove into either. Heavy Psychedelic Ballads and Dirges sounds great. I’m a fan of the Nuggets series. I became aware of Nuggets from the Rhino releases in the 80’s.

    • @RandallWeaver
      @RandallWeaver  4 месяца назад

      I was reading a little about Nuggets. I guess it started out on Elektra and then was re-issued by Rhino, which took the name and produced a whole series of Nuggets albums. I agree, I think it's a great series. Definitely much more garage and pop-influenced than those Ballads and Dirges comps I showed. I've gotten a ton of good comps over the past couple years....they've really become part of my regular listening. Thanks for commenting Vinyl Richie!

    Hello Randall; Some good vinyl additions for May. The Psych Ballads & Dirges sounds interesting. The Nuggets 50th Anniversary box set looks good, & like the original there are some questionable song choices. Based on the compilers decision. Take care, Tina & Pat!~

      ha ha you're right - Lenny wanted Do You Believe In Magic so he got it! That's actually fine for me because I love Lovin' Spoonful, but I'd rather have something a little more obscure on the comp. So many of the records from the original Nuggets have become well-know now, thanks to Nuggets. I know I've gotten several albums by Nuggets bands. Thanks for commenting Tina & Pat!

    A music paper in Toronto (Exclaim) famously gave the new Black Keys record a score of 4/10, which caused the Black Keys to review that review. "Exclaim Magazine really didn't like it," Carney said ... And, about the reviewer: "He lives in Manitoba, so he gets a pass." And then later, Exclaim staff reviewed the Black Keys' review of the Exclaim review! Hilarious. I still haven't heard the record. Very interesting finds!

    • @RandallWeaver
      @RandallWeaver  4 месяца назад

      The comments on both the Black Keys and the KOL record have been interesting (along with the new Paul Weller which I haven't shown yet.) Long-time fans seem to have mixed reactions about all three, leaning negative. I've really liked all three and I think the Weller record may be my favorite from him. You think I'm too accepting? Should I adopt an arms-crossed, "prove-it" type attitude? lol I like to read record reviews myself but I always try to keep in mind that the reviewer is probably reviewing after one listen. Assuming the reviewer listened to the whole record. I think reviews were more useful back in the old days when you had to rely on the written word for information. Now we can all listen for ourselves. Rock on Embryonic Robot!

      @@RandallWeaver I think you are right about reviewers only hearing a record once. I am drawn to reviews, but they are sometimes prejudicial and have turned me away from some records. When I look up reviews of Time-Tested Records, I am always stuck by how completely wrong they can be.

    The Black Keys just announced that their arena tour in North America was canceled. Didn't say a reason but low ticket sales are suspected.
    I have this album and as a fan of them, I was disappointed as a whole. They took a left turn and were going for something, I just don't know what that thing is.

    • @RandallWeaver
      @RandallWeaver  4 месяца назад +1

      "I just don't know what that thing is..." well, maybe it'll come to you after a few more listens. I'm sure you've probably had the same experience as me where an album I didn't care for on first listen really grew to become a favorite. I really liked this one first time through though. Too bad about the canceled tour. Maybe they'll re-schedule at smaller venues, which would probably be better for the real fans. Smaller venues always better, isn't it? Well, anyway, give the record another spin or two when you get a chance - thanks for commenting!
